Woohoo! Almost as good as getting the Grey Cup, but much longer lasting satisfaction... :)

how close to calgary do you need to be to get the signals?

I am about 20km west of broadcast hill.

If i can get a signal, which antenna should i be looking for.

I just cancelled bell so I would like the locals.

thanks.

I am about 20km west of broadcast hill.CFCN-DT won't be up for awhile, but click on these links to the lower right of this reply for the best info to get yourself prepared.

20 km west of Broadcast Hill means you won't need a huge antenna setup - I'd suggest a Small Combo antenna (shown on Antenna Chart) so that you get all the existing analogues and then the new digitals as they come up. If you read some earlier posts there is a Delhi dealer in Calgary that would have some good options if they're out of the 93x series of combo antennas.

thanks for the tips.

I found a rep, one that I actually deal with, just did not know they sold this product.

vu-933sr $200, and vu-935sr.

both about 1-2weeks away.

will this antenna do hdtv? i know it will get the anologue, and digital, but no mention of the hdtv.

anyone on the west side of the city using one of these?

thanks.

Yes, it will get HDTV when the digital stations come up. The ATSC standard contains formats from 480i up to 1080p, but CFCN-DT will be in 1080i like all the other CTV digital stations.

hey,

i have gone and read lots of the threads on OTA. Some really good reads.

Today I went and built a really cheap antenna. I went from 0 stations to 4 stations, three of which are very clear.

I am beside the Cochrane hill, so about 20-30km from signal hill.

I was going to get a delhi 933, but it is 11' and we get massive wind storms out here.

I would like to build a SBGH antenna for the attic. Do you think this will work? has anyone else built one yet is this area?

If the cheap $2 can get me 4 channels, one would think a SBGH would work.

thanks

Which channel numbers are you getting clearly now?

I'm not so sure an SBGH will fit into an attic so you'd best do some measuring.

Also, the SBGH is a UHF-only antenna so you won't have much luck with the present VHF-based analogue stations out of Calgary.

Wikipedia says ch32 in Calgary is CTS.

sure, thats the one.

without the antenna i get nothing.

so the cheap hanger antenna gets me 4 channels.

i think i should be able to receive up to ten according to tvfool.

thanks

Incorrect. Although most (though not all) stations are avoiding VHF-LO (Ch.2-6) for DTV, VHF-HI (Ch.7-13) is highly desirable and most stations there will likely revert to their previous channel after 2011.

I want a 70 foot tower.

Anywayz, use 3 antennas.
One for UHF (bow tie reflector/4221)
One for VHF (yagi)
One for AM/HAM Radio (Ground Plane)

Some random notes.
4221 is designed to NOT pick up FM channels.
From the chart i am looking at. 70 foot towers increases one Line of sight by 10 miles. A 1000 foot broadcast tower has a line of sight of 40 miles. Therefore you shouldnt have any issue in picking any channel within 50 miles of you.
Also lets us not forget about HAM/AM radio. I know in London here i can hear WJR [760am] from Detroit (150 miles) at any time & at night i can get WGN from Chicago [720am].

Good Luck in your efforts,
Alvaro Marques

It's been a week and the original poster hasn't commented, so I'm merging this into the Alberta thread.

Hello Stampeder,

I live aprox 30 km straight east of Calgary and I am looking for an inexpensive indoor antenna or even one that I could make myself. I am only looking to get a cleaner reception on the current channels available from Calgary. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks

hi jetboy,

What do you mean by inexpensive?

I payed $60 for a generic 4 bay Bow tie reflector (Eaglestar pro)+ found an used outdoor pre amp (philips) for $8. Add some discarded RG6 cable. (Yes discarded rg6. Visit the local post secondary school when the year is over.)

Also you can try any electronic liquidation store. Around here you can get a Philips MANT 510 indoor Antenna for $20.

Plus there was an Outdoor antenna that you hook onto a satellite disk for like $20.

How to made an bow tie antenna here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWQhlmJTMzw

Good Luck on your efforts,
Al

Hi jetboy, you're out Strathmore way? I wouldn't go with an indoor antenna at that range, but if you want to build a Gray-Hoverman (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=81982) for outdoors you'd be loving the UHF channels from Calgary.

The problem is that many of the local channels will still be on VHF-LO and VHF-HI for awhile so an outdoor combo antenna would be best for you.

See the Antenna Chart. If its not on that chart, its not worth buying:

The latest Industry Canada OTA station listings (http://www.user.dccnet.com/jonleblanc/Canada_TV_Stations) show a Station Status change of CTV Calgary's CFCN-DT channel 36 from RE to TO, meaning that after being referred to the CRTC they've now been given Temporary Operating Authority to bring the station up.

See Post #134 earlier in this thread for details on their application.

No word on when CFCN plans to begin tests. If anyone gets such info from CFCN please let us know here. :)

Hey,

Being just west of calgary I am getting 32 and 38 very clear for uhf. Should I not be getting 16 clear? Getting a better signal on 5 and 9 than on 16 using a SBGH.

Also should I be able to get 45 out of Canmore?

thanks

stampeder

Channel 45 in Canmore is just a CFCN analogue repeater for the other side of the Three Sisters, and its a pea-shooter at that so you won't be getting it. :)

CBRFT (SRC) on channel 16 is also a very low power station so it doesn't surprise me that you're not getting it very well.
