j0dest3r 2011-03-05, 05:22 PM TIMCAT CFCN is low power ATM. I may be difficult to pick up. You may have to wait a few more months for it to go full power.
Check out the current DTV list here. http://www.user.dccnet.com/jonleblanc/Canada_TV_Stations/DT.html
Tim Cake 2011-03-06, 12:00 PM Timcat:
CFCN is on UHF 36. It is on a temporary low power transmitter. My friend in Claresholm uses a ChannelMaster 7777 mast mounted preamp and a rotor in his setup. On some "problem days" he finds the rotor helps him get that last little bit of signal quality from CFCN. CBC has yet to convert to digital (big surprise).
All you can get (digital) in Nanton is CityTV, Global, and CTV. My friend in Nanton is so happy with the three digital OTA stations that she canceled her Bell TV account. One year of no Bell satellite bills more than paid for her antenna, tripod / hardware, pre-amp, rotor, distribution amp and Free To Air satellite gear (she likes to watch alternate source news shows that don't appear on the BDUs).

How likely is it to get HDTV in this area of Calgary it looks like Nose Hill is in the way. What would you recommend for an antenna for that area of the city. The TV Fool Shows The Following results
Digital
Callsign Chan Network Dist(mi) Path NM(dB)
CKAL-DT 49 (49.1) ---- 8.5 2Edge 23.0
CICT-DT 41 (41.1) GTN 8.5 2Edge 21.7
CFCN-DT 36 (36.1) CTV 5.9 2Edge 20.5
CJCO-DT 38 (38.1) ---- 8.5 2Edge 19.3
CBRT-DT 21 (21.1) CBC 7.0 2Edge 18.4
CKCS-DT 32 (32.1) ---- 5.9 2Edge 15.7
CFCN-DT(1) 29 (29.1) CTV 5.9 2Edge 15.9
Hellcommute 2011-03-06, 09:55 PM I am in Beddington near 4th st N.E. just south of beddington blvd. A home build Grey Hoverman SBGH without a reflector placed in the attic pulls in all channels fine for me. All current digital channels come in fine too. Nose hill is not a showstopper in our area luckily.
I should mention that I feed the antenna into a signal drop amplifier and it feeds 2 sets in different parts in the house. As a side note, the SBGH pulls in Analog channels 2,4,5,9,13 as well as all of the UHF channels. Quite the antenna given it is nearly free to make. Good luck.

There seems to be something wrong with at least 2 of these numbers.
The new CFCN-DT Channel 29 will be transmitting with near 200 TIMES the
ERP of Channel 36 from the same antenna which are listed NM(db) 15.9 and
20.5 respectively!??? Can you please post the TVfool URL reference?
bridlecrest 2011-03-07, 02:18 AM I never saved the original reference so I re-did it and here is the new results

downbeat 2011-03-07, 03:26 AM Transmitter profile (http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3dc77a078d7cc7e9%26t%3dDIGITAL2%26n%3d7) says this:
Channel: 29 (29.1)
Network: CTV
Maximum ERP: 220.000 kW
Coordinates: 51.060278 -114.171389
Effective ERP: 0.019 kW (Adjusted according to your location)
Distance: 6.0 miles Azimuth: 219 degrees Compass: 204 degrees
19 watts! That can't be right! There must be something wrong with the TV Fool file …
The coverage should look more like what's listed for Channel 36 listed under pending (204 kW ERP):
Channel: 36 (36.1)
Network: CTV
Maximum ERP: 204.000 kW
Coordinates: 51.060278 -114.171389
Effective ERP: 139.257 kW (Adjusted according to your location)

Billsmith 2011-03-07, 10:52 AM Yep - I don't believe the TVfool report on Channel 29, they appear have something wrong somewhere! I spoke to a CTV Director last week and he said that the Channel 29 transmitter may be switched on in 2 weeks time depending on permission from the CRTC - so there is a good chance that all will be revealed very soon! :)
Emerald 2011-03-22, 09:12 PM Bridlecrest & Hellcommute: I am 2 blocks away from Nose hill and even after 5+ home built antennas with amplifiers I can not pull in any digital inside. As CBC is my strongest analog channel I am hopeful for their digital? I was spoiled for a year when Global was at Mayland Heights.
Before I gave a Terk HDTVA antenna to an elderly person, I tried it at home with no luck. In Shaughnessy it picked up Global & CitiTV really well with no CTV on a Samsung.
I have tried to keep my eyes open for external mounted UHF antennas in the neighborhood & the only one I have found is an off the shelf one across the north street from the gas station in the middle of Sandstone.
I am contemplating a DBGH?
downbeat 2011-03-23, 03:20 AM Two blocks from Nose Hill? If you're on the north or east flanks, I would not expect to be able to receive anything indoors. The signal shadow from the hill is significant for all DTV channels.
Perhaps when CTV bumps up to full power you might have better luck.
As for CBC, their transitional antenna is not at the top of their mast and they'll be on UHF 21 (versus analog VHF 9), so your reception may be as bad as with the other UHF channels.
I'm thinking an outdoor antenna (whether home-made or commercial) is de rigueur for your neighbourhood.
Start a trend and get the neighbours talking! :)
Emerald 2011-03-26, 08:25 PM Downbeat: Thanks for the comments.
Will all digital antennas be moved to the top of the masts after Aug 2011 or does this just affect CBC?
Several limitations preventing an outside antenna.
Inside I have a SBGH with tin foil reflector & a Phillips UHF amp. For Ch 36 the TV provides a power level of ~35 AMU that is still too low to display. Ch 41 & CH 49 show 0 regardless of aiming. Ch 41 showed 72 when it was in Mayland Heights. April 1st cannot come fast enough to see if I can at least get 1 out of 4 DTV Stations.
Bill Smith: Is there any update on post 1029 that CTV is fast tracking CH 29?
Billsmith 2011-03-26, 09:43 PM Sorry Emerald - I guess it won't be just yet! I don't have any new updates!
bRIZZAd 2011-04-01, 03:16 PM bRIZZAd, CTV and CBC can be solid for you with the right OTA gear so let's discuss your reception over in the Calgary reception thread (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=81023). :)
So far in Aspen (SW) I am getting CityTV & Global on an indoor antenna (basic UHF/VHF Rabbit ears) hooked up to a Samsung HDTV without issue.
CTV & the new CBC (CBRT-DT) seem to be fussy. I can get CTV on a good day, though messing with CBC today it only comes in and breaks up right away.
I've been looking around Calgary for some better indoor antenna options, though most have ended up with similar results.
tanker 2011-04-01, 03:41 PM Response to bRIZZAd and Stampeder 11:50 am posts over on the Calgary & Edmonton temporary tech forum.
I've been getting CBRT-DT very strong (will blow your socks off with LED/LCD) since on air this morning. I'm in Signal Hill (69th St. and 34th Ave -- 2.9 miles from the CBC tower, line of-site; or so TVfool says ). This, with a set of rabbit ears and UHF loop !!
In Aspen, BRIZZAd, you are closer than me to that mast.
On the other hand I can't get anything on CTV-DT (CFCN, real ch. 36), I suppose due to their [temporary] low power.
Location is everything, I suppose.
bRIZZAd 2011-04-01, 03:50 PM Thanks tanker. I am have a couple sets of rabbit ears w/ loops though neither did the job for CBC. When it did come in, direction seemed to be key. I may have to invest in a more direction friendly antenna... perhaps one of those silver sensor clones to see if that helps at all.
moonwalker 2011-04-02, 01:27 AM Right now I can watch 2.1, 4.1 5.1 and 9.1
Just wonder when OMNI and Access will be digitalized?
j0dest3r 2011-04-02, 10:39 AM try using new media like twitter or facaebook to thank them. Alot of other people will notice and they might actually as well.
timcat 2011-04-02, 11:23 AM Happy to report receiving all four locals in HD with good signal even in this crappy weather Calgary to Nanton
downbeat 2011-04-02, 01:09 PM For now, please use this temporary thread ...
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=138603
... to report reception and discuss reception issues with CBRT-DT Calgary.
@moonwalker: At last report, OMNI and CTS are switching on Aug. 31 and Access will try to stay on analog for the forseeable future. French CBC will be turned off completely, barring a minor miracle.
For full discussion of various network transition issues, please see the various network threads in the main OTA forum.
