My manager just gave me my monthly phone statement. $4,426.00 for 451 mb of data.

WTF. I thought I was on an unlimited Data Plan. Guess not.

I like to occasionally log onto my Slingbox through this Treo 700wx. I had no idea it was going to cost me this much to watch a couple of minutes of hockey. It is a work phone and now I am responsible for paying this hefty fine or potentially get fired. This is not fair Telus. Some warning is required here. You can't put peoples livelyhoods at stake. Maybe my best plan of action here is to hire a good lawyer.

Should have reported your phone as stolen. ;)

Web surfing and streaming online content with mobile devices is strictly an American thing right now... As usual, Canadians must pay through the nose for similar services.

Canadians can avoid paying through the nose by:
- not using mobile devices for surfing the web and streaming content (that's what gawd created PCs, laptops and WiFi for); and
- reading their contracts so that they know what they should and, more importantly, should not do with their mobile devices.

Exactly. It's normal for average Americans to enjoy these services at affordable prices. Do not even think of trying this in Canada unless you are wealthy.

or just switch to a GSM / WCDM provider such as Rogers and/or Fido. Cus on GSM, DATA is DATA is DATA. My Unlimited Data plan will work on my cheap-0 $50 phone, just as well as it will on my pda phone just as well as feathering/teathering it to my laptop and downloading internet on my computer is STILL the Same Data, its all unlimited to me no matter how you slice it up

The first thing I did is ask what is unlimited, in the unlimited plan.

When they told you it was $15/month did you think you'd stumbled into some loophole or something, because if Telus had a true fully unlimited data plan for $15, you would see it plastered all over the internet and television.

Someone in the US successfully sued over the use of "unlimited". Maybe it's time someone does it here too.

Hi all. After New Years I got the HTC s720 smartphone with Telus. I'm on the Share 30 with the unlimited web and e-mail for the extra $15. I use the web and e-mail quite a bit so am quite nervous about receiving my first bill. But according to the e-care page on the mytelusmobility web site everything is free so far for all my data usage. The e-care has always been accurate for the couple of years I've been using it.
The rep I worked with was very straightforward and helpful. Unlimited web does not include any tethering or downloading, which I see from previous replies includes streaming (good to know!). And for re-signing for three years he threw in call answer, call display and unlimited text messages for the full three year term.
As long as you're careful with how you use the unlimited web, I don't see any problems.........(yet).

Tough to read your contract when you were never given one. This is a work phone which was handed to me without ever seeing a contract, or guidelines.

Well, since it was a work phone, why would you be using it for personal use such as Slingbox? Your company has every right to demand that you pay the bill.

When I signed up for my Unlimited Data Plan (the $15 one you all signed up for as well), I specifically asked not only the rep in the Telus store, but a Telus rep at the support centre if this included ALL data in all forms including streaming, downloading, surfing and mail retrieval.

They confirmed that this deal includes ALL DATA EXCLUDING TETHERING. This includes streaming, downloading and everything I mentioned above.

Subsequently, regarding the thread I started above, I got them to remove all of the charges (after tax, it came to about $4000) they said I owed.

I was thinking that with rates like that, you are paying through another orifice

Many companies allow you to use work phones for personal use so long as you repay the personal charges. And if you read back you'll see that Stamped had no complaint with his company's policy or ever said the charges aren't his responsibility.

The issue is that the exorbitant data rates (seems to average $10/MB for Stamped) are catching people by surprise and they usually don't discover the problem until they have racked up a huge bill first.

There are just too many variables in these cell contracts across different providers and phones and usage patterns. If the phone companies respect their customers, they'll have to come up with a system to protect them from these nasty surprises.

I just got myself a 8130 pearl the other day and signed up on the 15 dollar unlimited email and messaging plan. I confirmed twice with a telus rep and somebody in store that this included data and they both said yes. Anything but tethering!! I confirmed with him that this was web browsing, blackberry maps and so forth and he said yes. So far I have only downloaded about 4MB in 4 days but everything on Ecare shows up as no charge. The guy in store though said that after tomorrow the deal is done so if you have it now your good but after tomorrow the unlimited data part is gone. :p

actually, in all the info I've seen the unlimited data is promotional. They can very well pull that part of the package anytime they want to as it is not part of the $15 option but a bonus. I can't see them doing that, but they have no obligation to continue offering it to anyone regardless of when they signed up.

Rogers has similar $15.00 unlimited data personal plan. Im sure its different and Im sure telus is the same.

Maybe the Telus sales rep does not fully understand the plan.

What the Rogers $15.00 gives is unlimited email data and Blackberry messaging to another Blackberry user.

All other internet surfing, yahoo messenger is extra data charges.

In the USA you can get unlimited data, full surf, email, messaging for less than $40.00 added to any voice plan from AT & T and T Mobile.

Rogers need to smarten up and give unlimited data plan similar to the us.

Bu the 2nd quater there should be another gsm carrier and lets hope the data plans are better which should force Rogers and others to lower prices.

I highly doubt that there will be another carrier that soon.
