pathfinder 2010-07-09, 01:48 PM I've read this thread but still a little confused if I need 2 multiswitches and 2 SW44 just to add a 5th output for a non-HD receiver.
I have a 9242, 5100 and 5800 with a SW44 switch.
I want to add another non-HD receiver. Can I use this multi- switch (which is like a SW34? ...part of my confusion) http://www.princessauto.com/fr/surplus/electrical/8238321-multi-switch (currently on sale) and run 2 91 sat (the non-hd sat) cables into it and then run 2 outputs from it back into the SW44.
So I would have 4 outputs from the SW44 and have a 5th and 6th output from the multi-switch, right?
Do I really need 2 multi-switches and 2 sw44 switches as pictured in post #3? ( http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showpost.php?p=682376&postcount=3 ) as I don't need 8 outputs and my 5th output doesn't need to be HD?
Thanks
Gary
Pinza 2010-07-09, 03:30 PM There will be no problems doing it the way you described.
ScaryBob 2010-07-09, 03:55 PM So what tells the SW44 which sat to use? Does the receiver send a tone or voltage to switch it?
Bell and Dish equipment use voltage.
pathfinder 2010-07-09, 04:00 PM Thanks Pinza....I'll stop by Princess Auto and pick one up....
dirtroad 2010-07-09, 05:09 PM Pathfinder see post 112 of this forum. I believe it is what you are wanting to do, with the least amount of equipment and easily expanded.

Depending on your programming package some channels may be missing on the new SD rcvr as some specialty channels are on 82, but the bulk is on 91.
Pinza 2010-07-09, 05:12 PM Yep, that was exactly how pathfinder said he was going to do it.
Pinza 2010-07-09, 05:12 PM Bell and Dish equipment use voltage.
Now they have Officially started using DPP, they also use a 22khz tone to control the LNBF.
dirtroad 2010-07-09, 05:22 PM Looks like I'll have pull out some old 22khz 5 X 8 switches and see what happens!
pathfinder 2010-07-13, 10:52 AM Just a quick followup - I hooked up the on sale $10 Princess Auto switch (Philips brand) to the 2 incoming 91 sat cables (thank God I labeled them!) and then did a checkswitch on the dusted off 4500 receiver and it worked fine.
Dirtroad - thanks for the link to the picture - I glanced at that post but didn't see the word 'switch' so missed it...eyes do tend to glaze over by the 7th page of a thread...:-)
Of course, now, being reminded how slow the 4500 is and archaic (not seeing the picture while viewing the guide!) , I'm tempted to get a newer receiver...

guttercat 2010-07-29, 09:26 PM Hi guys, i'm trying to setup my 5th receiver and I just realise something:
If my 5th receiver is a 2700 and I only need the 91, do I need second SW44 anyway or I can only use a HF Splitter and then send one of the 91 to my SW44 for my 4 others receiver and the other 91 from the splitter direct to the 2700.
Thanks
Pinza 2010-07-30, 06:57 AM No. You can feed it from a 2 x 4 switch in front of the SW44 but NOT from a splitter.
Rich7 2010-08-03, 09:38 PM I all,
I've read somewhere in this thread that Bell is using Eagle Aspen switch. I would like to do solution on post #3 with two SW34 and two SW44.
I already have an Eagle Aspen S-2140-CE. Can I use it as a SW34.
Thx.
Pinza 2010-08-04, 07:34 AM If I recall correctly the S-2140-CE is a 3 x 4 switch, meaning that it has 3 inputs, 2 from the LNBF's and 1 for an Antenna.
Rich7 2010-08-04, 08:59 AM OK, but can I use it as a SW34,
Thx
Pinza 2010-08-04, 09:04 AM If it has 3 inputs, I do not see any reason why not.!
guttercat 2010-08-16, 11:47 AM So Pinza, your telling me that i cannot do this? I dont understand why the splitter is working for a second SW44 (See first post of this thread) and would'nt work with the receiver.

ScaryBob 2010-08-16, 01:58 PM So Pinza, your telling me that i cannot do this?
That is correct. I am telling you that as well. You could put a SW24 or SW34 ahead of the SW44 (2 inputs from the 91 LNB and two outputs to the SW44.) That will leave two outputs on the SW24 for up to two SD receivers.
Pinza 2010-08-16, 04:45 PM Yes I most certainly am, as Scary says.
As for why, the SW44, dedicates each input to a side of an LNBF;
1a outputs 18v giving even Transponders on the LNBF (91)
1b outputs 13v giving odd Transponders on the LNBF (91)
2a outputs 18v giving even Transponders on the LNBF (82)
2b outputs 13v giving odd Transponders on the LNBF (82)
So any splitter on an input MUST be fed by the same voltage. On a second SW44 it would feed the other INPUT 1a with 18v on the same LNBF.
Therefore each side of an LNBF is always fed by a constant voltage giving either odd or even transponders depending on that voltage.
Now looking at your drawing, you could use the splitter to feed the 2700 but as soon as you choose an even Transponder the 2700 would output 18v (The splitter already has 13v) and would then effect the 1a Input to the SW44. It is impossible to have 13v & 18v on the same coax, so the higher voltage would most likely win and all receiver tuned to an odd Transponder via 1a of the SW44 would then be switched to an even transponder due to the higher voltage on the input.
Hope that makes sense.......
I will read it again after a few beers and chack it.....lol
Rich7 2010-08-19, 02:02 PM I all,
Just to let you know the result of the test that I did (ref: post 192 - 195) with the Eagle Aspen S-2140-CE as a SW34. Testing was done for the solution on post #3 and it is working well.
Question:
From the SW34 to the LNB, is there specific assigned connector on the LNB for the 13v and 18 V ?
Have a nice day.
Pinza 2010-08-19, 03:41 PM It is the SW34 that assigns the voltage that is then passed to the LNBF, most have the voltages written on them alongside each SAT input.
