: SW44 switch discussion
hipnsens 2011-11-02, 09:03 PM nothing makes sense...bought a new switch...no better...switched cables at back of dual tuner, and still one or the other worked, there is always ONE satellite feed that doesnt see both 82 and 91....in fact i can make the 3100 see the 91 and then switch the connections and it will see the 82...this is ridiculous and is driving me nuts....2 different switches, all combinations and there will still be one recvr that is not getting both feeds.
lightbender 2011-11-03, 01:24 PM Follow Pinza's instructions. When you swapped cables at the back of the tuner, did the problem follow the cable (i.e. the problem went from one tuner to the other), or did the problem remain with the same tuner?
hipnsens 2011-11-03, 01:58 PM I did....the problem followed the cable....so when output 2 was working, i switched and then output 1 was working.....i then switched them at the sw44 and still nothing improved, then i switched them into other spot on the sw44 itself and both were fine but the 3100 wasnt working properly, switch them again and same problem....it isnt specific to one of the outputs or one of the recvrs....it truly is "nuts"....is there a specific order to install the outputs?
i'm totally at a loss.....right now my 6131 is fine, my dual tuner is fine and the 3100 is only seeing 82...although when i check the signal the 91 appears as 95%.......anyone close to Ottawa Valley who knows an installer?
lightbender 2011-11-03, 06:00 PM So it sounds like the problem is tied to an output port on the SW44? You have 4 outputs on the SW44. When you say that you switched them on the SW44, what does "nothing improved" mean. Let's take this step by step:
1) You switched the cables on the dual tuner, and the problem followed the cable. So the cable connected to Input 1 has a problem. i.e. you moved that cable to Input 2 and then tuner 2 stopped working properly.
2) The cable connected to input 2 is fine. You connected this cable to Input 1 and then it started working properly
3) At the switch, you said that you switched the cables (I'm assuming from dual tuner 1 to tuner 2), and you said that nothing improved? What does that mean? I would expect that if you did this the problem would move from dual tuner 1 to dual tuner 2. This won't fix anything, it will just isolate if the cable is the real problem. If the problem doesn't move from dual tuner 1 to dual tuner 2 when you do this than their is something wrong with the switch and above.
4) Next you switched the cable to "another spot" on the SW44. I am assuming you swapped the dual tuner 1 cable with the 3100 cable? After you did this the dual tuner 1 started working properly as well as dual tuner 2 but the 3100 stopped working properly, it only sees 82.
This leads me to believe that the problem seems to be tied to an output on the SW44.
Can you verify that whatever receiver you connect to that SW44 output gets screwed up?
It doesn't seem likely that the SW44 is the problem since you bought a new one. Did you install the new inverter as well? Perhaps your input connections on the SW44 are incorrect? Do you get all the odd and even channels for both satellites on the receivers that are working? The LNB 91 outputs go to 1a and 1b, and the LNB 82 outputs go to 2a and 2b.
It could also be a cable, as I had weird things going on and redid a few connectors where the center pin was too short, and that solved everything.
tcat788 2011-11-05, 01:37 PM we currently have 2 6131 receivers hooked up. we are looking at getting a third receiver. i was told we could use a sw 4x4 switch to add the third receiver. we were told it will work with only two cables coming in from the satellite. we have added the sw 4x4 but we are no longer able to see the hd channels on our current 6131 receivers. we have one cable connected to the a1 dish and the other to b1 dish. the power inserter is connected to port 1. what do we need to do in order to get our hd channels back?
lightbender 2011-11-05, 02:16 PM is the switch a SW44? Your current set up consists of 2 SW21s? it sounds like you have 2 SW21s installed at the satellite itself, and then 2 cables coming into the house. Is that correct? The SW21s take the feed from one LNB (91) and combines it with the feed from the other LNB (82 - HD). In this setup you can only hook up two receivers, see link
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=79112
What you need to do is remove the SW21s, and then hook up the SW44 directly to the outputs of the LNBs, and then feed 4 lines from the SW44 to your receivers.
see link:
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=79117
make sure you connect the outputs of one LNB to 1a and 1b, and the outputs of the 2nd LNB to 2a and 2b
tcat788 2011-11-05, 02:37 PM i only see two lines coming from the satellite, i do not see a switch on the dish combining 4 lines to 2. the original set up was done for two receivers. when i talked to the service provider they told me we could use the incoming two lines with a sw44 switch. we've replaced the switch supporting 2 receivers with a sw44.
lightbender 2011-11-05, 02:45 PM what switch was supporting the 2 receivers originally?
tcat788 2011-11-05, 03:02 PM the only identifier i can find is he grb-2dhr
lightbender 2011-11-05, 03:29 PM Does it look like this?

if that's the case, then that's a ground block not a switch. Don't remove it!! You probably have a DPP twin LNB which has an internal switch that allows you to get both satellites on one cable. i.e. if you run both cables to the house you can feed two receivers. I'm not too familiar with this setup but there is some discussion in this forum on it. I'm not sure if you need a DP44/DP34 switch or you can use a SW44. Here is a link:

tcat788 2011-11-05, 03:34 PM the name of the website on your first link is not coming up. can you advise what it is as the link is not working
lightbender 2011-11-05, 03:45 PM I think the forum is not allowing, but just do a google search on grb-2dhr. I'll post the link in 2 parts:
Can you confirm whether you have a DPP lnb?

lightbender 2011-11-05, 03:47 PM first part of link is ebay
tcat788 2011-11-05, 03:50 PM yes, that's what it looks like
lightbender 2011-11-05, 04:07 PM ok if you do have a DPP twin LNB on your satellite, then you will need a DPP44 switch. What is the model number of the switch you purchased? Here is a link to the discussion on the DP44 switch
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=79131
tcat788 2011-11-05, 04:24 PM the model of the switch we bought is
video path multi-dish switch model sw44 103368
lightbender 2011-11-05, 04:44 PM ok you need to confirm whether you have DPP twin LNB or a legacy LNB. Are you sure you don't see two small SW21s on the satellite each combining 2 cables into 1? Verify whether your LNB looks like:
1) DPP twin LNB
see post #2 of this thread for a picture of it
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=79128
2) Legacy LNB
I can't figure out how to add images but it is 2 single LNBs instead one fat LNB
tcat788 2011-11-05, 04:55 PM the satellite dish has two heads. there are only two cables coming out from it. i do not see two cables coming out of each head combined to one unless it was done inside the satellite head.
lightbender 2011-11-05, 04:55 PM this is the legacy LNB. You should see two of these if you have legacy:

lightbender 2011-11-05, 05:07 PM do the two heads look like the legacy LNB picture above or the fat one below ?
