putting diplexers before the sw44 won't work well, ota signals suffer a large loss in signal level going through the switch, i believe it was a 25 db loss when i tried it.

That would explain why it will not work on the input side of an SW44 but why will it not work on the output side.?

I removed a SW44 switch from a 6131 and put up a SW21.I run a switch check and it shows the SW44 connection.I can only get sat82 and 91 is lost. What do I do to get the receiver to recognize the SW21.Thanks.

Try running a "Check Switch" with NO cable in the receiver, then re-connect run again.

My SW44 died and I just replaced it with two SW21 switches. Is there any degration in the signal going this way or any disadvantage?

I read all the posts in this thread today and learned tons, thanks for info everyone. I only used 2 outputs on the SW44 , so I wonder if I need to buy a sw44 or if the SW21 set up will be fine?

I changed my SW44 to SW21 as well and had it wrong with no 82 reception , only 91. After reading all the posts in this forum today I found out the problem.
Make sure 91 cable is in the sat 1 location on the SW21 and make sure 82 cable is in sat 2 location on the sw21. After I made this correction I get both 91 and 82 signals again.
good luck

Keep 91 is on the same side of each SW21, when they are both feeding a Dual Tuner receiver, or for feeding 2 Single Tuner receivers it is not at all critical. I always keep 91 on Port 1 and 82 on Port 2 to simplify troubleshooting later.

The 2 x SW21's will work just fine, on either 2 x Single Tuner or 1 x Dual Tuner receiver and as you will now be aware, there is no need for the extra Power Supply/Inserter, the receivers can provide all the power the SW21's need.

Thanks Pinza, i was having trouble with no HD and had the 82 on port 1 and 91 on port 2 of the SW21, once I changed those around and did the check switch proceedure, all is working again, and it recognizes the SW21 switches. It also helped to make the change in daylight instead of after 5pm with a flashlight. Since I am not using the extra ports then I will leave the SW21's in place.

Wow... so much to take in. This is all new to me since I've only delt with Cable TV- so I appolize to begin with. But was asked by a friend of a friend to help him with his Dish setup. He currently has 1 older stay dish with a single LNB and 2 standard def boxes (model?). He recently purchased a 9241 HD PVR, and newer style dish with 2 LNBs (82 & 91 X2). he was also sold a SW21 switch. Obviosly there are different ways to get this working, but end goal is to replace one of his standard def boxes with his 9241. From the sounds if things, he can get a fancier switch (kind?) and get it all working, or mount the 2nd dish up as well. I am getting confused by the 9241 since it has 2 dish input on the back of it. Is this because it is a PVR and is treated as 2 TVs? or? Looking for the best was to go abouts this, as it is freeking cold out now and don't want to have to do it over again.. haha. Thanks.

In addition to changing the dish and LNB's, you'll need to use an SW44 switch instead of the SW21, if you want the three receivers connected. The 9241 does require two satellite feeds because it has two tuners.

Hi folks,

I am preparing to switch over from an SD to HD setup with Bell. I currently have 1 dish with a dual LNB pointed to 91 (running a couple of 3100s off of it), and am planning to add a second dish with dual LNB pointed to 82 (rather than sacrifice signal with an elliptical dish). I want to connect two 6100 series HD receivers (single tuner). I currently have 2 coax lines running into my house from my dish.

From what I can see, I should be able to use an SW42 outside at the dishes to push the signal from all 4 lines into the 2 cables that I have going inside. It also appears that I will not need a power injector to get the SW42 to work outside (please correct me if I'm wrong on that). My only other concern is that the LNB on my current dish is pretty old, like probably 10 years or so old. Is there any chance that this LNB will not work with an SW42 switch? And will I need any hardware (besides the additional dish and LNB, obviously) other than the SW42 to pull this off? :)

Thanks in advance...
Milo

Using the SW42's will work, no need for a power inserter. The only issue is that if you upgrade in the future to dual tuners, you will have to add more lines into your house.

As for using two dishes, not necessary. You will not sacrifice signal by using only one dish.

I would use 2 x SW21's and not an SW42.

The SW42 switch is very old now, chances of getting a new one is slim. Bell TV offer a free upgrade, why not call them and have them add all the stuff you need, including a new 20" Dish with an SW44, or a pair of SW21's if you prefer.

Thanks for that, guys, I will go with a couple of SW21s when the time comes. The likelihood of going with multiple dual tuner boxes in future is in the small to non-existent category. I have a media center PC that captures from two individual tuners, so any expansion would be more in the way of a media center extender than another satellite receiver.

I am guessing that Bell will not want to provide a 36" dish to match the one I have.. :) (Never hurts to ask, I suppose.) Nearly zero signal fade, and I like that. It takes a major thunderstorm or sunspot activity to blank out my signal.

Thanks for all the good info.

cheers,
Milo

I don't even think Bell have any 36" Dish's available anywhere. I know they use 60cm Dish's for Commercial Installations and 75 or 90's for MDU but for your second dish, the 51cm should be fine, that Sat is newer and much stronger than the one at 91.
