Lately, my Samsung LNT4661 TV has been making pinging and tinging noises whenever i turn it on or off. No, it's not the startup melody, it's a metallic tinging noise, as if it were expanding or contracting inside.
Is this normal? I remember some older CRT sets doing similar things, creaks and pings would always happen whenever a set got turned on, or after you'd turn it off.
However, I've owned a few LCD's and this is the first time I've noticed it.

When I first got my 4665 in early Dec 2007, it too made some noises during the off/on stages. Was irritating for a while. Now it's gone or I don't notice it much any more.

I got mine in November, and haven't noticed any pings etc... of course that doesn't mean there isn't any. Just that I haven't noticed any :)
If it sounds like thermal expansion and contraction, then that's probably what it is. Sometimes this will go away after a while because the parts no longer stick but rub smoothly.

I've owned my Sharp LCD since mid October and sometimes when I turn it off I still get some pinging noises. As mentioned by 57, probably thermal expansion and contraction.

Do you think it's anything to worry about? I mean, nothing is wrong at all with the set otherwise. I just don't want the warranty to run out and a day later the set just not turn on :)

All depends on your comfort level. If you feel that there could be a bigger, underlying issue, then act on your instincts.

Personally, I'm not too worried about the pinging noise. Seems normal that something so new will still expand and contract. I'll just keep an ear on it for now.:)

Thanks for the help guys. Should be ok I think. Nothing seems to be affected by it, so I'll just keep an eye.
