Just searching the 4250 thread, can't seem to find an answer. Is there a way for the guide to only show subscribed channels? I know this is a feature on the HD 8642. Thanks.

how to delete ppv and vod channels?
how to remove unsubscribed channels?
if not, how to lock them from the kids?

1/2. The firmware on non-8642 STBs doesn't allow for this yet.

3. Parental Control - press Settings button once, scroll to parental control.

I believe you have this one-time option to request no PPV, VOD on your account.

The issue is, if you request no VOD, it also blocks VOD you get as part of your programming (i.e. Treehouse VOD, TMN VOD, etc)

There may be a way to disable any programming that requires the PIN - ie a billable programme, without disabling VOD itself (Free VOD). Ask the CSR.

Quite frankly, I don't understand why the PIN requirement itself is not enough to stop unwanted billing/viewing....

Is it possible to plug a USB key at the back of the Rogers 4250HD Digital Terminal and watch movies saved on the key. Or is the USB slot at the back of the box merely to connect it to other devices (like a computer?

The USB is essentially useless. You can use it to charge a device or plug in a keyboard. That is all.

the software on the rogers terminals does not recognise the usb key as a mass storage device, but it does see it as an hid input device, so keyboards/joysticks may very well work. i have yet to try a usb keyboard but will as soon as i get a chance.

I am wondering, since the new cisco box and the 8000 series pvr got the FW updates to show unsubscribed channels in a different colour on the ipg, i wonder if the 4250 STB is next?

I was wondering about that too this morning, as when I turned on the 4250 connected to my computer monitor, the STB showed Ch 1. Then I noticed I wasn't seeing anything on my monitor. I had to unplug the power for a bit and then, after plugging it back in, it worked again, but I didn't see any difference in the guide. The 4250 in my bedroom worked as usual this morning. I still haven't seen the update on my 8300.

It uses about 20W in standby and you could unplug it if you wished. I believe the "timeout" on the re-activation is about 3 weeks. Of course it'll require a few minutes to reboot and some minutes to download the new IPG information. Perhaps you could put it on a timer? (timers use about 3W)

Thx ..20W at standby is a lots of juice. What does the 4250 actually doing with the 20W?

It maintains readiness to download firmware and update the IPG, which it does throughout the day and mostly in the early morning.

It would be possible to make this item "wake up" to do these things, but that would require additional firmware and perhaps also hardware (likely), so it's not done at this time.

At some point in the future, all such devices will be mandated to use say 1W maximum in standby (off), but at this time it's lower capital cost overriding inexpensive operating costs. Every home typically has lots of parasites.

thanks 57. Hope SA will have some form of firmware update to minimize such power consumption.

The latest firmware on the SA8300HD allows for spindown of the internal and external HDDs, so some power will be saved there. I have my Watt Meter used elsewhere right now and I'm also waiting for the iHDD to "settle down" after the firmware updates are totally complete. Then I'll see how much power is saved on those units.

As for the 4250, not sure if much can be done there with firmware, or if they're even interested in that sort of thing.

They might want to make the user interface identical accross the various devices, including adding the benefits such as grayed out unsubscribed channels.

I swear it worked before on the Analog SD outputs, I could invoke the Zoom/Stretch modes, but I was trying to capture a program to DVD and wanted to do a zoom to eliminate the pillarbox on the HD channel, so it would capture on the DVD with out the black border, but for some reason it doesn't work. Was it always this way? Its been so long since I used the composite outs I do not remember..

Zooming etc. has never worked for me, when connected to an analog SD set via S-video.
