jamesk, see the post above yours. i posted aobut this happening to me too, did you not see my post?

it happens be cause the hdmi sends a signal to check if the source is connected, and when it does find it, it powers it on, but in the case of the 4250 its still off. i already posted about this, no body seemed to listen to me theyre answer was leave it always turned on, which is a temporary solution, but not a permanent one.

No, I didn't see your message until now, as I created a new thread which was then tacked onto the end of this one.

You need to make sure that you are tuned to the HD stations in the SuperSports package to watch it in HD, otherwise you get the SD feed. HD feed is in the 49X range, as well as in the 35X range as duplicates...

Hello Ale,

THanks! But I realize that most aren't offered in HD. I was curious.. since I Can't access ANY of the channels period. My box however, I figured this out this morning.. is stuck in b'cast mode. Meaning its only doing 1 way communication in.

So I've replaced some cables... still nothing.
Moved the explorer somewhere else in the house... still nothing.
So now, I have a tech coming.. maybe to change out the splitter/lines...

yeah if its in b'cast then its a communication problem between the box and the node on your street. it could also be a bigger problem than just you, ive also seen a node gone bad, but no one on the node had digital, so the problem was never "reported" untill someone on the node became a digital customer.

Not all channels in Super Sports are SDV stations... some are, but not all...

When my rogers box is out putting 720p resolution, when I press the settings button, there are some lines that blink across the screen. Could this becaused by a bad TV or bad HDMI cable? The problem goes away when I watch a program in 1080i or when I force it to 1080i resolution. Another thing to consider, it does not happen on upconverted sd content, only when a true HD station is being brodcasted and when ever I'm in the settings or quick settings, or it used to happen in the guild too, but since quick start launched, it dont do it in guild no more.

could it be a bad HDMI cable? should I try another one? I never did it with Analog connection to the tv (component)

I clicked on Settings and pressed for Closed Caption to be on but I don't see it on any channel. Is there a way of getting it back? Thanks in advance.

Press Rogers remote settings button once to get to quick settings, scroll up to CC, turn it on. Works on almost all channels. Start with CP24 - it almost always has CC. Do a cold reboot of the STB if it doesn't work when the CC quick settings are "on".

Also make sure you haven't made any changes to the CC options in the Settings menu - press settings button twice. I usually recommend leaving these in the default settings, so that the CC displays. If you know what you're doing, perhaps changes there can be beneficial.

Hey this is probably a stupid question but I recently purchased a samsung LCD 720p HDTV. Should I set my stb to 720p to match the tv or go to 1080i. Also the 480i does not appear so I use 480p is that ok?

Your TV is probably 768P, therefore 1080i is usually the best choice if you're only going to set up only one HD format. Try both and see what you prefer. Here's the FAQ on Upconversion for more on the topic:

Here's the FAQ on TV formats, which you need to understand so that you understand that your TV is 768P, not actually 720P:

Ah k thanks, I did indeed verify my model and it is 1366x768 so I guess I will go back to 1080i as my only HD format. Now my 480i doesn't work (prolly cuz plugged in via Hdmi) so I use 480p, now when I go on sd channels I notice it fits the 16:9 screen so I imagine it's stretched out and nou zoomed in? Don't want to lose some image. Now ny question is are the channels 4:3 and just stretched or are they zoomed in?

Your TV is stretching (and/or zooming) the SD channels. Since you've got an LCD, for the best picture quality and an undistorted image, watch in 4:3. Repeatedly pressing the TV remote's stretch/zoom/whatever button cycles you through the various options in the TV.

Also make sure you haven't stretched/zoomed the image via the Rogers remote's # button - same thing.

Ok then what's the point in putting 489i\p if i'm still watching 4:3? So there is no upconversion? I have a logitech harmony and there is no size and I don't feel like switching to 4:3 every time...plus I like when the image covers the whole image

Another stupid question, sometimes when I reboot the stb, the tv logos disappear

The Harmony remote will have a hard (or soft) button that allows you to change the stretch modes on the TV, to 4:3 if you want for the SD channels.

The point of using 480i is to minimize the number of conversions, as mentioned in the links I provided. If you don't see any advantage in using 480i (or P) in your case, which is an easy conversion, then simply don't use it. 480i/p also allows you to have the TV stretch SD channels while leaving the HD channels alone since almost all TVs remember the stretch modes for SD/HD separately. None of this is necessary if you watch all programming in it's original aspect ratio and then you can select 1080i only if you wish.

If you prefer to watch a poorer quality picture with a distorted image covering your entire screen, then that is your prerogative. I simply provide options/recommendations and the advantages, disadvantages.

The logos have probably disappeared because the image is stretched/zoomed. Either via the # button on the Rogers/Harmony remote, or via the TV's stretch modes. You need to figure out how to unstretch the image on the STB and the TV. If you can't do it via the # button for the STB, then press settings, scroll up to picture size and select "normal". If "normal" is still stretched when viewed on the TV, then you need to select the mode on the TV that doesn't stretch.

Applying stretch modes to HD channels is not recommended since you'll lose about 35% of your picture when a true HD programme is aired, because many people forget to "unstretch"

Thanks 57 for all your help. After playing with my STB, I noticed 720p looked a bit better than 1080i but I still chose 1080i from the wizard (along with 480p) so now I use Upconverted-2 so on SD it is 480p and on HD 720p. I also learned how to change P.Size from my Harmony remote. :)
