ARS Technica just wrapped up a performance comparison of ATI and Nvidia with the latest drivers from both.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071230-measuring-cpu-usage-during-hd-playback-ati-vs-nvidia.html

As we can see from the results, the 8600 and the 2600 are the best value proposition and are generally equally matched.

Another thing of note is that there is so little CPU utilization that one can very legitamately expect to run with low end dual core CPUs and still have very acceptable performance levels.

I am on the verge of getting a 2600 for one of my systems so if I do, I will write in on the difference going from onboard X1250 to an HD2600 Pro (The spegific version of the 2600 that I am eyeballing).

que3jxp - You neglected to mention in your post that this comparison was for HD playback of both HD-DVDs and television content in 720p (for HD-DVD) and 1080i (for TV)!
