: Toronto/Buffalo OTA channels after 2009 and then 2011 (closed)
backnblackgt 2009-06-13, 11:18 PM Hello all,
Hope the transition will work out for you all. I was just showing the channels to a friend and everything is coming in great here in Waterdown. I did a rescan this AM an picked up the four ION channels.

Walter Dnes 2009-06-14, 12:39 AM Because reception has been atrocious Friday and Saturday until the evening, I've held off posting until now. I was able to get a brief lock on WNYO and WPXJ Friday evening. so they got added during re-scans, but they were not viewable, except at "the sweet-spot" (more about it later). My somewhat anecdotal experience...
WGRZ has been one of (would you believe three of?) the few rock-solid Buffalo stations for me the past couple of days.
WIVB has been uncharacteristically weak for me
WKBW is a "sweet-spot" station for me, which is bad. If I put my Silver Sensor antenna in front of window with a clear view towards Buffalo, I get 0% to 10%. If I put the antenna in the living room, pointing at an array of 3 vertical windows from 12 feet away, where it has no business whatsoever getting any signals, I actually get stable pictures on WKBW and WIVB. Other stations come in OK, so I generally leave the antenna in the sweet spot. WGRZ and the Hamilton stations suffer during the daytime at the "sweet-spot", so I have to put the antenna in front of the south-facing window if I want them during the day. WKBW was too weak to auto-scan in on Friday...
I tried entering 38 maually; no luck
38-1 no luck
38-2 no luck
38-3 and it finally locked!!!
WNED has gotten a bit weaker, occasionally pixelating
WNLO comes bombing in on a rusty coat hanger, let alone a good antenna.
WUTV was weakened somewhat
WNYO is unwatchable. It'll come in for a few minutes at a time at the sweet-spot. Absolutely nothing at the south-facing window.
WPXJ is a sweet-spot station. At the sweet-spot it is perfectly stable. The only problem is the extremely low volume on 51-1. To give you an idea how bad it is...
For all other Buffalo channels and sub-channels, except 51-1, I set the volume to 10 on the indicator
For all Toronto stations, I set the volume to 13
For 51-1, I have to crank it up to 30 to get the same volume
I sure hope reception improves soon. Currently, it sucks.
I don't see any "remove station" or "remove all stations" functions for my Panasonic PX75. So what I do is disconnect the antenna, and run a scan, which captures only a few analog locals and 1 or 2 Toronto digitals.
sterney 2009-06-14, 01:37 AM Walter Dnes, I agree. most stations have been cutting out/pixelating a lot more since the switch over. WNYO is terrible with crackling and what looks like a film grain effect.
Macros17 2009-06-14, 07:31 AM ION has been hit or miss for me in Brampton. I picked it up Friday night until Saturday morning then lost it during the day only to have it return at night. This morning it's really booming in at 95% on my Sony's ATSC tuner. I never could get 51 analog very well either so I wasn't expecting much. I can now receive WNYO (49.1,49.2) consistently, it was intermittent before. I've always had good reception of 49 analog so this was to be expected. Overall, reception of all Buffalo stations has improved for me. My hardware is an original CM4228 with a CM7777 preamp.
peano 2009-06-14, 08:06 AM I did a rescan Friday and it did not scan ION. I tried it again Sunday morning and I now have the four ION stations, WFXP 66-1, WQLN 54-1 from Erie (Tropo I guess) and WNYO 49-1. WGRZ is also stronger. WUTV is about the same. I am east of Guelph using the XG91 and 7777.
bigcam406 2009-06-14, 09:03 AM im in south oshawa, and i did 3 scans on friday and saturday.i've noticed a few things.first, wgrz is a major improvement, signal very strong and stable.wivb has been hit and miss.wkbw has been hit and miss.i received ion51 for the first time last night with a very strong signal.mytv is being received with a strong stable signal.still cant get wutv.im using an indoor philips MANT510 antenna.
I rescanned and picked up the 4 ION stations and last nite they were coming in very strong. WNYO is still a little bit weak at times and all the rest of the Buffalo stations are coming in the same for me,so all in all reception is still good here. I have 25 stations in total and I currently am setup temporarily on my back deck which is shooting thru the trees.
Once I get my antenna moved to a better location I should be in good shape here in Ancaster :)
Bob
mr weather 2009-06-14, 10:09 AM With all due respect to those trying to watch ION there really is no point in rescanning if you lose the channel. It's not as if ION magically migrated from physical channel 23 to somewhere else.
Mark2074 2009-06-14, 11:16 AM Well put mr weather
ota_canuck 2009-06-14, 10:02 PM As of 7pm June 14th. Many changes happened over the past few days. This is what I now have, 36 channels, not including some weak ClevelandOhio/southernPA channels that peak in&out occasionally.

peekaboo 2009-06-16, 09:55 AM For me everything seems the same. I was wishfully hoping that I would pick up the missing BUF OTA's I am dieing to get but no luck. Just FOX and CW for now.
JRymal 2009-06-16, 10:41 AM After the transition I lost WUTV Fox 29.
Did they re-point their antenna, relocate or otherwise change their output?
My other US stations all went up in signal strength, WGRZ being the strongest, going from low 80's to 95 on my Sharp Aquos
Rooftop mounted 4bay (generic) pointed between Buffalo and Toronto, closer to Toronto.
I could and mbe should try re-aiming more towards Buffalo, but as of now I don't get SunTV or Global strong enough for digital. If I move more towards Buffalo I might lose more Toronto stations.
recneps77 2009-06-16, 12:25 PM AFAIK, WUTV has been fully operational since April(?) when they switched analog early. Nothing has changed since.
tenstu 2009-06-16, 09:46 PM Same here. Watching ION Life (Finally a HGTV type show for my wife - hey honey, look at the new channel I go for you!!) and no IDEA what it is.
Oh well, 96% signal, I really can't complain. They'll get it all sorted out eventually...
PPL4GOLF 2009-06-16, 10:15 PM June 12 shut-off did nothing for me...
Still not getting WGRZ most of the time, lost WKBW for most of the NBA final LOL. Also lost WUTV/CBS a couple of nights which is atypical for my current contraption.
Picked up 49.1/2 for a few minutes only. No sign of ION. I am putting up a tripod on the roof and hopefully I will get the US Open on NBC.

Hummm...sitting here in Beleville, Ontario, about 120 miles away from the Buffalo stations and getting them in most of the time. WGRZ and WIVB have been in over 90% of the time. WUTV is the hardest, and only comes in about 20% of the time.

In my case I still get WUTV-DT after the switch without re-aiming. I briefly got WKBW-DT last Sun. but it lasted only a few minutes. I have no problem with any TO locals including SUNTV. I use a SBGH. I'm dieing to get the remaining US OTA's.
tenstu 2009-06-18, 09:16 AM Has the station dropped? I have lost it this morning after days of reception in the 70-90 range. I suppose it is likely the weather, but thought I would check in!
mr weather 2009-06-18, 10:42 AM It's been very drizzly, almost foggy since last night. I'm not surprised you can't receive it (I lost it too).
RustyHD 2009-06-18, 03:43 PM Are we talking about ION? I get one day full signal the next day none. Tenstu are you getting reliably?
