I am curious to find out if anyone is using an Apple TV for their media capabilities. I have an iMac upstairs that houses most of my media (5000 mp3's, 80GB of Movies in Divx form, and pictures).

Currently when I want to watch a movie I transfer it to my external hard drive and walk downstairs and hook up my Macbook Pro to my Sony LCD by VGA and play the movie with VLC. Do you guys have any recommendations on a better solution?

I have been reading a bit about the Apple TV and it seems very expensive for only 40gb. Do I have to have things stored on the Apple TV to watch it? Does it not stream?

I keep my media very tidy and tagged properly and really just want a solution that will work in my situation. I have Cat5 run throughout the house and wireless as well.
Thanks

I use on but just to get my music to my home theatre, my pictures to my TV and my kids seeing You Tube on a bigger screen.

I have the 160GB model and I am very happy with the entire arrangement and feel it was well worth the price.

3 of my friends have AppleTV's and are very happy with them. It will stream your movies, music and photos. (Photo streaming wasn't originally available but was added with a recent firmware upgrade) If you ever get an Airport Extreme, it will even stream from a USB drive connected to the Extreme. Keep in mind it won't play your Divx movies without it being hacked. You might want to wait and see if a new model is released in mid January when Macworld takes place. Typically a new model would be announced then.

Hope this helps.

After I edit HD videos in iMovie, I'd like to be able to view them on my HDTV. Will AppleTV do this?

A fellow at work told me you can stream from your I Mac to your PS3 for playback. I hope this is true, because I'm asking Mrs. Claus to get me a PS3 for Christmas!

Yes, you can stream a Mac to a PS3, but you'll have to download and install EyeConnect software (free). It's simple.

But let's get back to the topic, Apple TV.
