It'll be a long time before I retire my Xbox thanks to XBMC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_Media_Center). It's amazing what can be done with a 733Mhz Celeron chip and 64MB of RAM. I'm sure if the specs were a little higher it'd be able to handle h.264 as well.

Still, it is nice to see the 360 get support for more widely used codecs.

It's true those guys had the xbox wired in terms of the software that was created, but for the past year or more I have just used it to watch mostly divx encoded avi files. So for me regardless of what it has done for me, it's one useful function that remains for me should now be able to be replaced by the 360.

I'll be putting it through it's paces to make sure it's up to snuff (it will certainly have the processing power needed for some of the higher rez content that the xbox couldn't handle).

Sweet, so now I can really retire my LG LDA-531! Since the PS3 and 360 will support DivX! Hmm, I just wonder if they'll upscale that type of content actually.

as my 360 doesn't have any kind of networking with my pc, i'm hoping they also allow for files to be saved onto the 360 HDD. that would be amazing. but since the PS3 already allows that, it's only a matter of timing before both competing consoles do divx.

They may just allow you to play these files off of USB drives, that's what I'm hoping, or better yet, of DVDs... that would be a plus.

My question exactly, will it ever play MKV, or other HD divx files? thats where the future is. Not blueray or HDDVD.

Confirmed to allow playback of DIVX and XVID from CD/DVD. (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/xbox-360-divx%5Cxvid-test/xbox-360-divxxvid-playback-tested-verdict-its-almost-perfect-329769.php)

I had no issues with streaming, playing off a DVD or USB thumb drive.

The quality is fantastic, it looks noticably nicer than when it was transcoded with TVersity. great update

I find it's a hit-or-miss.

None of my Xvid encoded home movies would play. Other video Xvid video clips play fine.

I'll re-encode some of my home movies without sound to see if it doesn't like the sound codec or the video codec.

2 of 2 DivX files I tried last night worked via the USB port with a USB key drive.

I am having tremendous success with it and streaming from a PC with WMP11 no less. I have about 100 or so DivX/Xvid encouded TV shows. Out of all of those only most of one particular series (British Spooks) would not play, but they were all similarly encoded from the same source. The rest, 90+ from various sources all worked.

I am super happy with their implementation and support. As I mentioned in another thread, my xbox has officially gone in the closet now that XBMC is no longer of any use :D

I streamed a bunch of divx files last night just for fun and saw that there has been improvement with the streaming as well. It buffers pretty well and is quick even when skipping chapters or fast forwarding within a divx file while streaming. MS did a pretty good job with this update IMHO.

Any have problems after this update?

I just got mine and i noticed 2 problems already:

1) I rented a widescreen DVD and it's playing in 4:3...so the movie has side bars and top-bottom bars

2) When i connect to XBox live, it doesn't do anything....keeps me waiting.

Anybody else have any issues?

First it is important to make sure media sharing is setup with MP 11. I'm not sure if it is like the MP4 update a while back but you might need to physically have a file on the 360 before you can stream it. Copy a AVI file to DVD or USB stick and try to run it off the 360, it will give you an error but there will be an option to download an update, do it and you will be good to go.

I mention MP4 because I had to do this before the 360 would see them from my PC, so I just did it this way when the DIVX update happened.

Good luck

what do you guys mean by streaming? do you mean stream from your home PC to the 360 or stream from the net via wireless home network?

Bkwa & Mxz600, assuming you've done the xbox/pc setup already as outlined on"http://www.xbox.com/en-AU/pcsetup/overview.htm", make sure windows media library is set to be shared. In that library, you can set what folder to use where your videos are stored. Once you do this, you should see all of your videos in the media player library (under video of course). I stream my avi files through to my tv using the xbox360. I used to use the transcode360 program through media center, but with the latest update, everything is done through the dashboard now.

In dashboard settings on the xbox, scroll to the tab where it says photos/videos etc... and the folder should be there when you select video. You must enable sharing within media player first however (a box should pop up with xbox360 asking if you want to share). I'm going from memory for some of this but thats the jist of it.
