: Format war fanboys shut down AVS Forum
cyclo 2007-11-07, 08:44 PM Title says it all... From the CNET article about the going ons at AVS Forums:
We have seen members attacking other members not only in debate, which is the right way, but with physical threats that have involved police and possible legal action. (http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9812929-7.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-20)
Fortunately, proponents of either formats here at Digital Home are more civil even though discussions get heated at times ;)
That's pretty pathetic... It's only a format people, get a grip!!!
This is the reason that DHC is on my short list of forums, people here always stay civil. :D
hc666 2007-11-07, 08:49 PM haha holy
yeah we are way better here :)
so U, how's the A2 ;)
The A2 is at my parent's place in Florida. I'll get it in December. The only title I really want it for at the moment is the Bourne one so the timing should work out. The 5 free movies take 8-10 weeks so that will be next year.
HT gearhead 2007-11-07, 09:29 PM Unreal, not you 1080p. I mean the whole AVS mess. A heated debate is fun even if it gets retarded sometimes but we keep it civil here which is great. :)
Toshiba will be blamed by the BDA for starting a civil war in the US and Canada.
SensualPoet 2007-11-07, 10:38 PM Actually, I encourage passion ... and level-headed-ness. Yikes! How Canadian is that?!? ;)
That's pretty sad:( I have been frequenting there quite a bit lately as my AV hobby has usurped my watch hobby for the time being. Northing wrong with some good debate but it has been a little heated over there at times. The funny thing is that the gaming forums seem much more civil!:o
otown47 2007-11-08, 07:35 AM Its only part of the AVS forum....lets not get carried away here....;)
spensar 2007-11-08, 08:18 AM Clearly it's the fault of the stupid irrational <insert format> fanboys!
eljay 2007-11-08, 09:05 AM It's time to drop both formats and return to the warm embrace of SD DVD... ;)
shabbs 2007-11-08, 10:05 AM Madness. Good that we're all pretty civil here at DHC. :)
Obviously they've never had to read through a thread of Poet's marathon replies. By the end of reading everything, the rage will have subsided. ;)
Heh heh.
JohnnyG 2007-11-08, 10:25 AM I don't know why anybody turns this stuff into something personal. I'm clearly on the HD DVD side, and Calvin and U (just for example) are clearly on the BD side, but I have absolutely nothing against either of them on a personal level. I'm happy to debate and argue with all BD'ers 'til the cows come home, but I draw absolutely no conclusions about the actual person from it all, unless THEY turn it into something personal. After all, we already have an interest in home entertainment in common, which is what brings us all here in the first place!
As an example of turning something personal, it really peeved me when a certain ex-customer of mine intimated that he thought I was a good person until I started posting negative things (or really, pointing out inconsistencies or incomplete information) in BD threads. His opinion of me as an INDIVIDUAL changed because I don't agree with him on his choice of optical disc formats! That is just amazing to me.
oh shut up Johnny you HD DVD, RPTV loving so and so :)
but seriously, many forums have been destroyed by divisiveness and negativity. ******'s and members whose response to every post is "that sucks" or "why buy that crap" are simply not welcome.
I want lots of arguing and discusson but it has to be civil and it has to be objective. Discussions should be passed on fact and not on what someone read on a blog or because someone heard that a sales rep in a big box retailer said so!
JohnnyG 2007-11-08, 10:51 AM Just for the record, I'm no more RPTV loving than I am flat panel loving! I just think RPs have received a bad rap for no good reason. The ENTIRE bulb-based RP concept was flawed from the start, but the technology of rear-projection is still perfectly sound and has a cost:size advantage that is unlikely to change.
Just for the record :D
The point is, it doesn't bother me in the slightest if everybody on this site disagreed.
The record has been duly noted.
Paulo 2007-11-08, 10:54 AM This is really disappointing, but not a surprise at all. With all the heated debating that goes on there it was just a matter of time before this sort of thing happened. I did find it strange that the site was locked down yesterday at about 2 pm Est. but thought nothing of it.
I must say, that perhaps because of the volume over at AVS it must get a bit more difficult to "police" certain threads, especially the HD DVD / BLu Ray area.
I concur with what most have stated here, DHC is just more civil when it comes to the heated debates.
Paul

Heh heh.
And, thank gawd!, some of us can be pretty AND civil. ;)
Yours in posting,
The Marathon Just the Facts Poet
FortMacDude 2007-11-08, 02:06 PM The only reason to get emotional about HD formats is about your hard earned money invested into a format that eventually becomes obsolete so you want your own format to win and will say or do anything to slag the other format in hopes it will sway enough folks to your side and thus keep your HDM of choice around for many years...
It's rationale to want your investment not to be lost but it's irrational to make it personal.
I mean all of us invested in VHS and eventually that died out..and we're all alive and kicking now...so why such the rabid behaviour now?..win or lose..you need to make informed choices and live with it...
99gecko 2007-11-08, 05:26 PM ... all of us invested in VHS and eventually that died out
What !!! When did that happen!!! Why didn't anyone tell me!!! :D
Dioneo 2007-11-09, 09:34 AM It's all due to their two-party political system. Americans are trained to choose one side for life and demonize the other ;)
Really, it is a shame as the BD/HD-DVD forums in AVS had lots of good info if you could look past the fanboy posts.
It's crazy to me that this format war got even more heated than DVD vs DIVX!
