: Rogers SA3250HD Issues
rogerchoi 2007-12-12, 12:44 PM Is anyone else having signal issues with some of the HD channels?
I'm getting this loud noise when I'm watching Raptors HD and Score HD, but seems fine for regular digital channels.
Does anyone else have this issue?
I SAYS PARDON 2007-12-16, 07:20 AM I have just purchased a Panny TH-42pz77 and a new upconverting DVD player. Set it up yesterday, watched Spider Man 3 in 1080i and wow, I'm blown away. But I have a question.
Rogers is coming here tomorrow to set me up for digital and HD (yes, I still had analog!!). I've already picked up the 3250 HD box. But the 3250 doesn't have an HDMI connection. I haven't been able to find on the forum if this is normal, or if there are different version of the 3250. Does anyone have an idea? And if there are, should I return the one I have to Rogers and get one with an HDMI connection?
Thanks for your help.
An HDMI connection is not necessary for HD, you can use component video cables from the SA3250HD to the TV. This is actually recommended since there are a lot of issues with HDMI and STBs.
It would also be possible to use a DVI-HDMI cable for the SA3250HD, along with analogue audio. You can purchase one for about $20 at a computer store, or even less online.
The Pace 551 has HDMI, as does the SA8300HD PVR. The Pace has been quite problematical with HDMI, as discussed on this forum many times - do a search of this site for "Pace HDMI issues" or similar.

I SAYS PARDON 2007-12-16, 10:17 AM Thanks 57. Your help is much appreciated.
xtremesniper 2008-01-11, 02:37 PM I'm having some major problems with the 3250HD box. When I go to work during the day and then come back home, I'll turn my receiver and TV on and I'll usually get my digital cable picture showing up just fine.
But lately I've been having problems. Sometimes I'll turn it on and I'll see a black screen. I'll get sound, and if I press INFO I will see the info bar pop up, but no channel content. If I switch the channel, suddenly video comes back and if I switch back to the previous channel it seems to be working fine.
But just last night I experienced something worse. Not only did the video go out, but the sound went too. And if I switched channels, NONE of the channels would show up, just the info bars.
I unplugged the set overnight and the same thing continued in the morning. I'll be calling Rogers some time this weekend, since I'm at work right now so I can't. But until then, has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know what may be causing it?
The box is connected via component cables, so I don't think it's a handshake problem (as that is only an HDMI thing, right?)
Any help would be great, Thanks!
You said you unplugged the set. Did you unplug/replug the TV or the STB?

Do a cold reboot of the STB and check your signal strength, S/N Ratio.

xtremesniper 2008-01-11, 03:59 PM Oh, I meant I unplugged/replugged the STB. When I get home I will check the signal strength, although after many many years of using the box in the same position, I wouldn't know why it would just start to mess up all on its own. The problem actually started when I put in my Denon receiver, but somehow I doubt that is the reason. Thanks for the advice. I'll be back with a follow up soon.
MapMaker 2008-01-15, 12:17 AM Is there some reason why I should lose my STB volume setting every day, or am I fooling myself into thinking they should stay as I set them?
The first time I start up my Audio/TV/STB every day, the sound level on the STB is back down to 17.
This occurs every day even though I reset it to the maximum volume setting of 30 every day. What am I missing?
Haven't encoutered that myself. Have you done a cold reboot (unplug/replug)? Also, if you want the volume at 30 all the time, why not simply go into the settings and set the audio to fixed instead of variable?

MapMaker 2008-01-15, 05:47 PM I have done cold reboots and it still happens. I have now changed the setting to fixed as you suggested and will check back tomorrow on the results of this.
My gut feeling is that the STB is rebooting every night because I also have set the previous channel to come on when I start up, but the first channel I get the first time I switch on every day is channel 001. I know that is not a channel I ever go to intentionally.
Try changing the "on-channel" to a particular channel - say 24, or a favorite channel of yours.
There was a new firmware download this week, so that could have an impact, but once you have the new firmware, all should be fine:

MapMaker 2008-01-15, 06:54 PM I've changed the on-channel to a number, so we'll see tomorrow morning what happens along with the volume.
Funny that you mention the firmware "update?" I wrote down what was on the box in order that I could see if an update ever took place. Guess what? The "Old version was SARA Ver 1.59.18.1 and now the "new version is SARA 1.53.23.1
I thought "updates" went UP numerically, not DOWN?
Have you checked your signal strength and S/N Ratio? See first link in post 549. For firmware updates, usually the second last number is important, although I have no idea why it would go from 59 to 53.
MapMaker 2008-01-15, 11:58 PM Signal Strength -7 with S/N Ratio alternating between 35 and 36
mark2000 2008-01-16, 09:38 AM 57, if you get this today, please get back... I need to make a decision and your assistance will help me greatly...
What are the issues with DVI to HDMI on the 3250? Is it true the analog channels don't work with DVI to HDMI? (800 series)
I need analog channels to work...
And also, do I need a DVI-I, DVI-A or DVI-D to HDMI adaptor for this to work?
Thanks!

Is there a reason why my SARA is still 1.59.18.1 (11/16/06)? Page 17, right?
updates are done by region. Some people may not have yet seen the firmware update.
Analogue channels You can receive the analogue channels (2-72 or similar) just fine (although they are digital on Rogers). Some TVs do not accept 480i via DVI-HDMI. You need DVI-D/HDMI. I would see no reason that the analogue channels would not also go out on the DVI connection, although this would depend on if you still get these channels - some areas don't.
Here's a list of HDMI issues. DVI can be worse.
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=71112
For some people the connection works fine. For others it doesn't. I often recommend using component video on these STBs due to a fair number of issues - if you get DVI to work - fine, but if you don't then CV is the way to go.
MapMaker 2008-01-16, 12:48 PM Well...wouldn't you know it, 57 nails it again!
My preset channel came on as set and my volume doesn't need to be increased/reset in order to be heard.
I would think though that if the preset channel works, why wouldn't the "previous channel" work? Otherwise remove it as an option.
Is there a reason why my SARA is still 1.59.18.1 (11/16/06)? Page 17, right?
Yes, page 17, and mine is at 1.53.23.1 after being at 1.59.18.1 since late December.
blackstar79 2008-02-02, 08:17 PM Hi there. Have had my terminal for about 1 year but for about 2 weeks now i've noticed on occasion when i turn on my rogers terminal (explorer 3250hd) i seem to be able to get some audio on channels and some channels no audio, seems to be getting worse and worse lately. note that i bought a new receiver a couple of days ago and the problem is the same as my old receiver. also i've tried 2 different coax cables and also an optical cable and have the same problem with all of them. can't seem to get audio on ANY analog or digital channels other than HD channels and even some HD channels i get no audio.
When i tried connecting the sound through rca cables to the tv i'm able to get sound on any channel through those. anyone else having this problem? is my terminal dying on me?
also no sound issues at all with any other components connected to my receiver
Have you performed a cold reboot of the STB (unplug/replug). Have you checked the signal strength and S/N ratio of the affected channels?
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=17719
Have you checked the audio settings of the STB (press settings twice) to ensure it's set to Dolby Digital and not other.
