: Rogers SA3250HD Issues
Nick Martin 2007-06-13, 11:11 PM Hi. Thanks for responding.
The problem, "where the picture would disappear but the info or guide information would still display" is exactly what I'm talking about, where unplugging the terminal is the only solution.
My TV, a 26" Toshiba LCD, doesn't have a DVI input, so I have always used component video. Looks fabulous, too. (I know, it's small by today's standards but hey it's what we could afford :) )
Earlier posts in this thread mentioned the problem occurring at specific times, where several people had the problem all at once. In my case it happens all the time, and for the first time, it happened on its own without changing the channel this afternoon.
Other than that the usual issues crop up from time to time - FOX 29 freezing, CITY TV sound /occasional picture glitches, but those are quite common as I understand it.
an2one 2007-06-25, 11:41 AM In case anyone is interested, I figure I should describe the solution I'll probably live with. The problem was, of course, that a low backlight setting on the TV interfered with channel-changing and guide-navigation on the STB via a remote control.
My TV is a Sharp Aquos LC-46D62U. Its backlight settings range from -16 to +16, which is of course the brightest level. Through repeated experiments, I was able to determine that interference occurred with a backlight setting of below -1.
I therefore set the backlight at -1 (only a little brighter than I'd have preferred) and have not had a problem thus far.
Wow, "sifting" and "57" you just saved me another trip to Rogers!!!!
I have a SA3250HD with a Sharp Aquos LC-46D62U. I've been dealing with the same issues as sifting for the past 2 months, with the channels flipping up\down by itself, remote not responding..... I've called rogers tech numerous times, but none can help. They suggested replacing the batteries on the remote, getting a new remote as the buttons may be sticking....blah blah blah. But obviously it wasn't the remote, since I tried using the Sharp remote, and experienced the same issues.
So last week, I decided to replace my SA3250HD at Rogers. Got home and set it up, and everything worked great. I was happy until the next day, when the same problems reoccurred.
I will try these suggestions tonight. I also read in another thread that having OPC turned on, also causes interference with the remote.
Thanks again!

Nick,
My 3250HD also has the exact same symptoms you describe. I have tried both DVI and component outputs, but it made no difference. I can't say whether it was the firmware upgrade because I purchased a new unit the same week the upgrade happened. My old rental unit I had for a year was rock solid.
My solution was to put the box on an electronic timer which shuts off the power for a few minutes every night at 2 am. This has almost completely eliminated the problem. The only downside is the next day the channel is back to 1 and volume is at half level, but that is a small price to pay. Of course I still get the constant freezing on Fox HD and a couple of other channels.
romulus 2007-06-28, 04:09 PM I believe this has been discussed before, but my
search was not fruitful. Sometimes(not always)
my SA3250HD outputs a signal to my Westinghouse
LTV27W2 even though the STB is off. I would prefer
no signal when the STB is off. This is because my
DVD recorder has an input that records when it
detects a signal. Since the 3250 can set a "VCR"
timer, this would be a convenient way to record.
However, with this random signal/no signal issue,
I can't reliably use this recorder feature.
I believe that the STB always outputs a video signal, therefore you cannot use that "detect" feature. Most people set a VCR timer on the STB and an equivalent timer on the VCR or DVD Recorder on "line 1" or whatever input you're using. Most people also gave up on the VCR commander.
I suggest you use the DVD recorder's analogue tuner for analogue channel recording and then use the STB only for digital channels.

From my brief experience with my 3250, I think the operative word is "sometimes" rather than "always".

I don't see the advantage of using an RF input to record. The quality is better when using composite or S-Video. (also mono vs. stereo)
I don't see the advantage of using an RF input to record. The quality is better when using composite or S-Video. (also mono vs. stereo)I believe you missed the point. You don't use the RF-coax output from the STB, you use the RF-coax directly from the wall, split to the recorder and STB.
If you read the link I posted, you will see the advantages of this setup. You get stereo if you do this and the PQ quality may actually be superior. You can also record analogue channels while watching a digital channel.
You need to ensure that your signal strength is adequate downstream of the splitter.
coolspot 2007-06-30, 08:19 AM The Guide with No Picture problem happened to me last night - had to reboot the box...
marty shaw 2007-07-31, 11:43 PM Yes it continues to happen from time to time.
I have gotten used to it, which is bad...
...I should be screaming from the mountain tops !!!
I'll have another beer instead.
am592 2007-08-10, 11:30 AM I've had the same picture loss problem for months. I called rogers they told me to unplug the box. I got fed up because it happened so often that they sent techs over. They suggested I get new cable installed (which rogers paid for) since the existing was the old thinner cable. Within a couple of days of installing, it froze again. I called rogers and was told to reboot and wait to see if it happens again. Almost three weeks before it happened again yesterday (it would still freeze for 5-10 seconds quite often, but the picture would come back, usually at the beginning of a show). So I called rogers again, and for the first time it seemed that rep I spoke too knew what he was talking about. He told me that there have been complaints about this problem from others and that they're working on a software solution that is currently being tested. He told me he expects it to be available in 'early September'. He also mentioned that a new model will be coming soon, hopefully without the problem.
DLPAddict 2007-08-26, 05:58 PM Hi everyone !
After a long summer I've got my new STB from Rogers
Since the old one was acting up on a weekly basis and the new TV season is upon us I decided to get the another box well.......one week after I got the STB the bloody box went blank! (I should say dark) no picture only the channel/info display:(
So I reboot the stb and still work for now....will see maybe a call to Rogers
I still can't see A&E HD I don't know what is going on
Scott84 2007-09-27, 12:19 PM How do you do a reboot to my 3250HD?
On the audio out on the back of the unit, the 'white' plug, i get static from it when I plug in an audio cable. The red, no static, the white, static.
Its weird. I bought the unit last week at the Futureshop sale.
I hope I dont have a lemon, it was working fine before. it just started happening randomly.
You reboot by unplugging the unit for a few seconds. See the following thread for this and other tips.
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=17719
You may have a bad box or a bad analogue audio cable. Try another set of cables (any cables with RCA connectors will do for a test) or try the red cable in the white plug to see if that works. Also, make sure you're inserting them all the way at both ends. See:

Tezster 2007-09-27, 12:53 PM I'm not sure if this will make sense, but how do I *completely* turn off the 3250HD without physically unplugging the power?
Let me explain.
Last night, I switched my 3250HD connection to the TV from component to DVI. My DVD player and STB are now both connected to a 3-port HDMI switcher (bought from Monoprice), which in turn is connected to the TV. The STB is connected to port 1, the DVD to port 2.
When I turn on/off my DVD, the little signal led light on the switch blinks on/off to indicate if there is a signal detected. With my STB, however, there's *always* a signal detected whether it's on or off.
Also, if I were to turn off my STB, switch the HDMI to port 2, then switch back to port 1, the STB still outputs what looks like an SD signal to my TV (while it's 'off').
I'm hoping this isn't normal and when I turn off my STB I do in fact want it to be off without outputting any kind of a signal -video or audio. I couldn't find anything immediately obvious in the settings to change this.
The STB is always in standby (even when you press the off button) and is always sending out a signal to some of the ports (like S-video for example).
This is why the "auto-record" function will not work on DVD recorders (the ones that detect an incoming signal and start recording). I'm not sure what happens with HDMI, however, when connected directly to a TV, the TV usually says "no signal" when the STB is turned off, but perhaps there is still an electrical signal that your switcher is picking up.
Most switchers have a port specifically designed for devices that do not switch off to allow them to auto switch - check the manual
d2e8b8 2007-09-28, 01:21 PM Initially, when you switch off the STB, there's no video (or audio).
However, after some time (and I can't really say how much time since I haven't done this scientifically), if you switch the TV on while the STB is still off, there's both audio and video from the last channel.
Of course, to change channels or view the guide, the STB then has to be turned on.
Tezster 2007-09-28, 02:40 PM Another little quirk I've run into... whenever I turn my TV on first, then the STB, I will always run into the HDCP handshaking problem i.e. I receive a "HDMI/DVI locked due to Copy Protection" message.
I have to remember to turn the STB on first, which is strange because I have the opposite problem with my DVD player i.e. I have to make sure the TV is on first, then the DVD player. In short, there's a very specific sequence I have to follow to make sure there's no HDMI connectivity issues.
I have a panny DLP which were originally introduced in 2004 (bought in 2005), and is only HDMI 1.1 compliant, so I wonder if that's the cause of some these HDMI handshake issues.
ChrisET 2007-10-01, 10:55 PM UPDATE! http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=64261 PROBLEM UNFIXABLE :(
Hey everyone,
I seem to have a minor issue with my STB/service that I hope would be fixable.
First Off
-Rogers DCT3250 High Definition Cable Box (less then 1 yr old)
-Samsung HD TV (LNS...)
-Using DVI to HDMI
My only problem is that one channel that I watch in particular (FoxHD CH531) will randomly freeze while watching over a period usually between 3-20 mins each time, however all other HD channels that I watch do not freeze on me at all. If I leave it on sometimes it will start playing again if I wait but that can take up to 10 seconds or sometimes not at all so I usually turn the STB off/on again. So what does anyone know about this?
Thank you in advance
This is a known issue with this channel (Fox Buffalo), both with the PVR (breaking up recordings) and with the STB - freezing. Rogers is working on a repair, but there is no known "fix date".

Wayne 2007-10-04, 10:34 PM Why does the SA3250HD still have a DVI output? I could understand this in about 2002 but it is 2007 and I have a new SA3250HD manufactured within the last 3 months with a DVI output. Why not an HDMI output? Do any current TVs or other A/V devices come with DVI these days? Very few.
The reason that this is problematic is that my TV is a Viewsonic that only has one component input but multiple HDMI inputs. I want to connect the cable box to the HDMI input with a DVI-HDMI adapter. This works fine for the video but with this connection I don't get any audio.
