Thanks for this. I'll try it. I hate Channel One, anyway.

I feel dumb.

When I go into the settings menu, it doesn't give me an option -- "viewer - power on."

At the bottom of the settings dialog box, two buttons are displayed. One is the the "exit" button on the remote to exit the menu. The second, which I can't find on the remote or the box, is supposed to take me to "More Settings."

Press the settings button twice.

Many thanks for this, 57.

It didn't remove the channel-change problem on startup with the box, but it will certainly reduce marital tensions.

At 5 p.m. every week day, my wife turns on the TV so that she can listen to Don Newman's Politics on CBC Newsworld while cooking dinner. She has tended to get explosively frustrated when the channel-change jams on the first numeral and she can't get to her program.

Now she can go directly to Newsworld on startup. Happiness and marital concord will reign.:D

For what it's worth, I finally traded in the 3250 with the remote control, channel-change problem on startup. The new one doesn't have the problem, even on Channel 1.;)

I don't recall if anybody has reported this problem, but instead of periodically going black, my picture suddenly started getting a green tinge to it. A reboot of the 3250HD always fixes it but its becoming quite annoying to have to keep rebooting.

Anybody?

Check your connections to ensure that they're good - unplug them, clean them, plug them back in on the TV and the STB.

I'm on my second 3250 and remote control from Rogers.

When I press the channel up or down button on the remote control, the 3250 will just keep on moving through the available channels ad infinitum until I turn it off.

When I use the remote control to check different times or channels on the guide, the 3250 will cycle through all available times or channels in the guide.

I'm beginning to wonder whether I'll find a properly functioning 3250.

Could this be a malfunctioning (stuck) button on the remote? Have you tried removing the batteries when this happens to see if it stops, or pressing the "opposite" button ch+ instead of ch-? If it does stop, then it's the remote. If not, then it's the STB. First thing to try is to do a cold reboot (unplug, wait 10 seconds, replug)

If you read through the operating manual for your remote control, you'll find instructions for "master power" or something like that (depending on the remote). This allows you to power on any devices with the codes programmed into the remote with one press of the power button.

It is not a good idea to plug most electronics into a switched outlet for repeated turning on/off. Most electronics require a "standby" mode, not on/off. For vacations, etc, it's fine to power a device down, but not daily.

I forgot to mention this.......

I hope you can keep your suggestions to anything besides one of those 3-prong-to-2-prong "cheater" adapters. I had googled this and electricians were cautioning about the lack of grounding -- which ain't good for appliances.

57, thanks for your comment. Somehow my original post has been deleted, probably by accident.

Anyway.... I have one of those new 5-button Atlas remote that came with the STB. I followed all the instructions on the big large diagram sheet from Rogers. The code for my TV has been accepted by the remote. My TV has a 3-prong plug, and thus cannot be plugged into the back of the STB (which has a 2-pronger).

The problem with this configuration is, I cannot just press "power" to turn on both the STB AND the TV. I have to press "STB" then "Power" to turn on the STB, then press "TV" then "power" to turn on the TV. There is no button that can turn both on/off simultaneously. If I have to change channels on the STB, I have to press "STB" then the channel up/down button. I suppose this is fairly typical of most configurations?

I don't believe you read my previous post properly. You need to do one more thing and that is to programme the remote for "master power", sometimes called changing the power control.

Using the appropriate keystrokes you can tell the remote which devices you wish to turn on/off with a single press of the power button when in CBL mode. There is no 'different button' - it's the power button, but it needs to be "assigned" to turn off both devices.

Again, Read the sheet/manual for the remote carefully - the instructions for how to do this are there somewhere.

You can download a detailed operating manual from post 5 of the following thread:

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=17719

The instructions will be something like:

The Atlas DVR/PVR 5-Device Universal Remote Control
has a unique feature that allows you to sequentially turn
on or off up to five of your home entertainment devices
with a single key press.
NOTE:MASTER POWER (PWR) only works in the CBL mode. If it
is not programmed, only the cable converter will turn on or off.
In any other mode, pressing MASTER POWER (PWR) once will
turn on or off the selected device.
To Program The Master Power Key:
1. On the remote control, press and hold SETUP
until the last-selected device key blinks twice,
then release SETUP.
2. Enter 9 - 9 - 5.The last-selected device key
will blink twice. Then press PWR once.
3. For the first device you want in the power on
sequence,press a device key (e.g.,CBL) once .
Then press PWR once.
4. Repeat step 3 up to four more times to add the
second,third,fourth,and fifth device,as desired.
5. To save the settings and exit the program, press
and hold CBL once.Next press and hold
SETUP until the CBL key blinks twice, then
release SETUP.

Thanks, 57. I did read it carefully this time (and the manuals as well). I successfully did it for the Atlas 5-device RC, and my two other remotes: the AT2000 and AT8400. Thanks so much.

My manual for the AT8400 (which I use) does have instructions for this on page 10/11.

1. Press and hold SELECT and CBL until all mode keys blink twice.
2. Press 998, the CBL key blinks twice.
3. Press TV, the CBL key blinks twice.
4. Press CBL, the CBL key blinks twice
5. Press Select, all mode keys blink 3 times. You're done.

In either CBL or TV mode, the power key will turn both off.

If you wish to add other devices to the sequence, simply add the other device between steps 3 and 4.

Note that each remote has different instructions. You should have received the small operating manual for the remotes when you got your STB/remote. Most people simply never bother reading them and either turf them or file them where they can't find them.

9-9-8 did it for me. I found two different manuals on the internet, the first one doesn't have this, the second one does -- exactly as you stated.

JCL, if you've got a link for the "good" OM for the AT8400, please post it here and I'll put it in the FAQ.

Got this one, and it's the longer version.

I've just exchanged my 3250 for another -- my third, as you'll see from the other posts here.

My second 3250 showed the same intermittent symptoms as the first one:

(1) failure to change channels with remote controls after start-up
(2) remote channel + and - buttons causing infinite scroll through channels
(3) a similar problem when using different buttons to change times or channels in guide.

Sometimes, a reboot would fix or change the problem; sometimes, not. Also, I was able to replicate the problem with three different remote controls.

This morning a Rogers technician installed a third box. In addition to changing boxes, he checked all connections and signal strength. Everything was satisfactory.

Initially, everything worked fine. But then the same problem appeared again.

He rebooted the box and it's now working as it should. I am wondering how long this will last.
