My 3250HD is hooked up to my Toshiba LCD using component inputs (my DVD player is using the HDMI input) and left/right RCA for sound. I notice that
the sound from the 3250 input is around half as loud as the built in tuner (or other inputs). I have the volume on the 3250 all the way up and have tried it on fixed and variable, but it makes no difference.
Is this normal?
Thanks

ThanksThe analog sound out of the 3250 always seems to be low. One way around this is to send sound from all of your sources through a receiver, ideally using the digital audio out from your 3250.

I'm having difficulty with the TV and STB synching their streching. Signals from the STB don't automatically change the stretch setting on the TV for proper viewing, (ie. Normal for 480i/p, and Full or Stretched for 1080/720). I have to manually do this myself. Not sure if this is normal, but when I use the OTA tuner the TV will automatically 'stretch' the pic for the HD signals and then revert back to 'normal' when I change to a SD channel.

Is this normal for the STB? I'm using component cables.

Should I reformat the STB as suggested in the FAQ or maybe there's something wrong with the TV?

Ya, I have done that too but don't always like using the receiver, especially late at night. Just wondered if it is normal and I guess it is.
Thx

Sleepaholic, you need to properly run the setup wizard as indicated in the Digital Home FAQ "Tips for SA STBs". The TV should then "remember" the stretch mode for 480i/p signals and be "forced" into "full" for the HD channels. Works fine when you set it up properly.

BJC, have you tried using the PCM or "other" audio setting and the "Narrow" audio range. This should increase the volume on analogue outputs.

You'll need to change it back to DD if you want DD sound for your receiver though.

57,

When I first turned the box on, without using the wizard, I think everything was switching back and forth properly. It was after using the wizard, that the STB has 'forgotten' how to switch.

I've run the wizard many many times, checking off every single combination of outputs available, correct and incorrect setups, but still can't get the tv to automatically switch stretching.

Thats why I was thinking resetting everything would help erase its memory of what I might have or have not done.

sleepaholic, with component video cables, make sure you're on "passthough" or "upconvert1". These are in the picture settings, press settings twice.

Try a hard reboot of the STB - unplug for a few seconds, plug it back in and wait about 1/2 hour for the reboot and download.

Believe me, I've tried both those settings, and every other setting for that matter.

I've tried the reboot, by unplugging the STB many times. I've reset my TV settings, unplugging it also.

I've unplugged every connection and wire, and still nothing.

Maybe I have a defective box? I think it might be a previously returned product as the writing for vol and ch are smugged off the front of the unit.

sleepaholic, OK, one more experiment. What if you use the S-video (or composite) connection to the TV. Does your TV do the right thing then on that input?

I switched to the "narrow" audio range and the volume went up to what other inputs/tuner is.

Is this like DD dynamic range? Will it affect the DD signal too?
(Maybe I should re-read the manual)

Thanks for your help.

BJC, it is dynamic range. It will not affect the DD signal.

57,

Well, I tried the S-video and also the coax input just for fun, and yes, still no auto switching between pic modes on the TV. The box states that the resolution of the signal has switched (ie. 480i to 1080i and viceversa) but thats about it.

What now?

It may depend on your TV. For example, my Hitachi

1. Remembers the last stretch mode for each input - so I can have the non-linear stretch mode for 4:3 programmes on say input 1 (for TV programmes) and have "full" for anamorphic DVDs on another input.

2. Remembers the last stretch mode it was on for each input, even when that input is "forced" to "Full" for an HD programme.

This means I can view an HD Programme properly and as soon as I switch to 480i/p on that same input it goes back to the stretch mode I had before.

If I switch to the "S-video" input it remembers my "non-linear stretch". I don't need to use this because of item 2, but I would have thought your TV would do one or the other.

Perhaps your TV doesn't?

Well my TV definately does item #1, just wish it did item number two.
Because whether I push a button to change 'pic mode' or push a button to change the input, its still pushing extra buttons just to change a channel.

I have the Sanyo HT30744, I saw one other poster in this thread had that TV but I don't think he checks his PM box.

57, thanks for all your help; not only with my problem, but with everyone elses...I hope you are getting paid in some way, you seriously deserve it!

So you think its the TV then huh? I shouldn't bother with exchanging the STB?

Well, if you think it might be the STB, you've got nothing to lose by trying another I suppose. Do you want to upgrade to the SA8300HD?

As for pay, nope, just doing it out of love and for the education. I've learned a lot on this site over the past few years and I intend to put some of it to use in a few months when I retire from my current job.

The best way to learn is by teaching.

well, I don't think I'll switch the box, and I don't think I'll upgrade to the 8300. I think the TV just doesn't to the auto switch. Anyways, thanks for all the help 57, I'm sure I'll be asking you some more questions later!

I have a minor issue with my 3250hd – I usually get a blank “info” screen when hitting the INFO button (no program description). I have to hit the MENU button, bring up the TV guide page, and then hit INFO. It will then go “blank” for 5-10 seconds, finally coming back with the expected program description. My 3200 digital always returns the description with the a push of the INFO button.

Any idea’s or suggestions?

KC

On my 3250HD the detailed programming info doesn't seem to load up automatically unless the STB is turned off over night...try this...
