Yeah, that'd be nice alright. I just can't see the remapping of channels on an almost daily basis as something that is logistically feasible to Shaw

Just when I thought it couldn't get worse, here I am watching the WJC game against Finland, and the picture quality is just horrible. I can't even say it's HD anymore.

I'm calling Shaw again today. I know they won't do anything about it, but it's time I became a pain in the ass. I'm not paying $75+ a month to get this crap.

Have you called? What's their response? I'm sure it's just the same old "check the connections, we'll send out a tech, I've never heard of anyone else with problems, etc..."

I missed the game this morning, but I'll be watching on Friday for sure.

I am not sure why shaw wouldn't be able to shift channels to different QAMs based on overall available bandwidth: they control the digi box so they could have different channel maps depending on when HD VOD is on, or nhl network is on, or nfl games are on.

If nothing is on, say, hdnet & other hd channels are 2xQAM, if something else comes up they get put 3xQAM and the additional space is used for the other channels.

I would think that on-the-fly provisioning should be available to shaw: anybody that knows more about the back-end side of things wants to chime in?

In order to do that each digital box will probably have to be reset each time shaw wants to change the channels.

I think he's called, had techs out, has a line boost, etc...

I don't know why the 'Peg is so bad.

Not great here in Van either - not to mention the constant audio dropouts on MC

I had a tech out once already, who told me "that's how it is". I know from having the superior picture quality with Bell ExpressVu that better is possible.

I'd call the tech out again. Might be an issue in your area and he might have been a dipstick. Might be your connections or even your tv. The HD experience here is pretty good. Not as good as when it was first introduced with the Omni channels, but not bad. I recently had a chance to watch HD on Star Choice at a buddy's place. I have to say that the Shaw offering was better quality wise. Can't speak to Bell's quality, but if you think its that superior, might be time for a change.

I'm starting to think it might be an apartment issue, but it's not like I'm getting signal drops, I'm just getting an HD picture that looks like it was compressed 25% or more. Sort of like a DIVX file, really.

Dude, I download Divx files that have better quality then Shaw.

I have no idea how this will actually appear to anyone else, but I decided to take a picture or two of the Junior's semi-final this morning to show you what I've been seeing. These are from the PVR, but are indicative of what I see during live broadcast. (Apologies to any Russian fans...)

Mozza - just watched that entire game.

No issues like that here - the PQ was very good.

I'm in River Park South - 2 year old single family home fwiw.

I might as well have watched it on YouTube. During the distant shots, it looks fine, but when it's upclose and there's even a bit of movement, it gets all blocky like that up there.

I am in St. Vital. The game looked fine here as well.

Yep, that's what the NFL football games have been like too. Pretty pathetic. I'm just happy that I now have a Tivo HD and can record the NFL on CTV OTA and get a much better picture.

Mozza: I watched a good part of the game here on a 6416 fine and there was no noticable macroblocking like your pic shows. Did you try setting the resolution down to 720P them back to see if that corrects it? Perhaps run it at 720P for the Canada game and see if it looks better. What's the refresh rate on your TV as well?

Tried switching back and forth, and I still get the same quality issues. When the TSN logo sweeps by, do you see a ton of macroblocking then?

Refresh rate on my TV is H: 33kHz, V: 60Hz. I'm assuming that's what you meant.

Would the fact that I have an older version of the 6412 make a difference?
