The purpose of this thread is for Digital Home members to review and relay their experience buying consumers electronics at J&R out of New York

This thread is strictly for reviews and is not for discussion. If you have any questions about what belongs in this thread, then please this thread (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?p=511105) prior to posting.

When you post, please try to include the following information:

What product or service you purchased.
Approximate timeframe you ordered the product
What location you dealt with if it’s a company with many stores or service locations
Your overall level of satisfaction
If you had a positive experience, please explain what made it such a positive experience.
If you had a negative experience, please read our guidelines below.

Guidelines for Posting Negative Reviews

The truth is no retailer or service provider is perfect and occasionally even the best companies can disappoint. Our experience is that good companies have problems but they typically make every reasonable effort to resolve problems.

If you had a problem and are posting a negative review, then please note what efforts you made to resolve the problem and the feedback you received. If you think the efforts to resolve the problem were NOT reasonable then please explain why. Saying you phoned up and talked to some idiot, suggests the problem may lie with the consumer and NOT the company!

No posting URLS or Directs to Competitors will be deleted

Posts containing URL's to competitors or posts saying gee you should have shopped at this retailer will be considered spam and deleted.

We want opinions, NOT sales pitches or spam!

Never buy from J&R Music and Computer World. I've had constant problems with rude and inept customer support, extremely high shipping prices, damaged items and most recently a wrong item was sent to me and they want me to pay for it's return.

The rules say no URLs for competitors - since the link below is just my personal blog I don't think it violates the rules but if it does I'll remove it.

I've posted an extremely long review here: http://thefunbucket.com/2007/11/03/my-experiences-with-jr-when-buying-a-xbox-360/

Humax HFA 100 atsc television tuner. (2 tuners bought separately)
First purchase February 2005. Second purchase July 2005.

I'm somewhat satisfied with J&R.com
The service and product were excellent on my first purchase.

The second product was sold as new but I received an "open box" item.
I was firm but fair with the customer service people. The issue was resolved with a reasonable credit issued to my account.

J&R customer service representatives were all very professional. They responded promptly to my enquiries.

Shipping to Canada was fast with United Parcel Service (UPS), however, you get dinged with an unreasonably high 'brokerage fee' by UPS.

My first order went perfectly. I received my package in 36 hours from when I made my order. Shipped by UPS which usually I hate for cross border shipping but the rate was reasonable and only needed to pay UPS for PST/GST which is expected anyway.

Here is what I purchased
Sony STR-DG910
Pioneer Centre Channel Speaker
Pioneer small bookself speakers (5.25" woofer)
Pioneer large bookshelf speakers (8"woofer with 4" mid)

Shipping Speed: Order placed on a wednesday I believe, and I had the item by the following friday. Website listed "Processing" until the day before it arrived, so the website tracking doesnt seem to be particularly effective. Overall I was pleased with the shipping speed though.

Shipping Price: My order was very large and heavy, so shipping was quite expensive. However all customs/brokerage fees were charged up front, so the only thing I paid upon delivery was tax on the item price (not the total cost)

Customer Service: I did not need to deal with customer service, although previous emails to them were answered promptly and nicely. I will also mention that the items were packed pretty securely.

Overall price: The overall price was outstanding. Got the whole shebang for less than the CAD retail of the receiver alone.

Overall: Definitely recommend them to friends/family that intend on getting hometheatre equipment. Movies are really cheap there too but havent tried ordering those yet.

I bought a Rio Karma from them many years ago and had no issue whatsoever with the store. Wish I could say the same about the shipping company! (I don't remember if it was UPS or FedEx -- there was only one option -- but the whole ordeal was a nightmare. Except for the fact that I did receive it... eventually).
