: frustrated, moving sat positions
brad27 2007-08-31, 05:18 PM Hello from Orillia Ont. here, recently moved our dish a few times because our signal has been out for quite some time. I can't seem to find the satellites to locate on. When doing check switch, everything I have is marked "x" I tried both connections and both 91 and 82 sats...can you please help me get started would greatly appreciate it...thank you
Brooker 2007-08-31, 07:49 PM I have adjusted mine a couple if times... try and get a look at a neighbours to see the general direction of theirs. Then I get a small tv and point it out the room you are in and try to adjust from there. Or else get someone to watch it while you tweak it a little at a time. Do you get any sign of a signal at all while moving it? Maybe its the switch.....hook a sat directly to your receiver bypassing your switch to test it.
I_Want_My_HDTV 2007-08-31, 07:56 PM Maybe a professional installer could help.
Your post is very vague. Please check the installation section in the manual that came with your receiver and also the 'Installation' threads on this site. If you have more specific questions that haven't been answered in those places, we would be happy to help.
brad27 2007-09-03, 02:05 PM ok thanks for the comments.....currently have 3100 receiver, dish is connected right to receiver directly. Powered on/off, tried two LNB's can't find signal on sattelite. no transonders or sattelite present. Does anyone have proper coordinates to pick up sat 91? I have checked to make sure arm is level no problem can't get a signal anywhere or can't get confirmation of transponders. Your help is appreciated thank you.
The very first thing to do is unplug the receiver for a few minutes. Running check switch a bunch of times seems to lock these units up. Give this thread a read. Sticky: Expressvu Installation Questions - Post in this thread or our 9200 Install 101 thread ( 1 2 3 4 5 6)
(Sorry can't get the link to work but a quick search on this title will take you there.)
You are using RG6 correct?
brad27 2007-09-03, 04:38 PM Yes I am using RG6....will try unplugging the receiver but don't think that would help...anything is worth a try. If you have any more info than thank you.
brad27 2007-09-03, 05:00 PM tried it nothing worked.....status device unknown, no transponders, no sattelite. Does the sattelite have to be in a certain direction to pick up transponders, and sattelite confirm...or just for signal....What I don't get is why nothing is being confirmed it's there.
i hate tv 2007-09-03, 05:33 PM I would start from scratch
Take the dish off of the mount/arm
Put a level on it, and make sure its plumb
Im in the GTA, and my elevation/skew settings are 40 elevation and 96 skew (i dont have my owners manual or i could look up the settings for orillia, but i think they would be close)
Concentrate on getting a signal on 91 degrees 1st
Then peak the signal (if you have a small tv you could bring out with the 3100, that would make it easier)
If you can manage to get a decent signal on 91, then check the signal on 82 and peak it if neccesary
P.S Try and aim the dish without the sw21 hooked up , 1 satellite at a time
Good luck
Brad27, I think you are going about this the wrong way. Just unplug the receiver for a minute, plug it in, go to the signal strength screen and make sure it is set to Sat 91, transponder 11 and start moving the dish around until to see signal. Doesn't matter if it says wrong sat as long as you can see signal. Wait a bit and it will usually tell you which satellite it is. Wildly panning the dish around won't get you anywhere either. You have to make minute adjustments to get signal. In other words point it in the general direction as the neighbours and then move it a fraction of an inch, pause, then move it a fraction of an inch again. If the bars move the least amount then try to get a lock to see what satellite you are aiming at then take it from there. Also keep in mind you have to have line of sight to the satellite so if you have a big tree or something in the way then it's not going to work.
brad27 2007-09-03, 09:47 PM I do understand that I have been trying to move it bit by bit but no signal comes at all....will try all this again tomorrow....I can't skew on my sattelite. only elevation... and left to right. There are trees around us but I'm not sure if it's enough to not get any signal as we have had signal before. Were near the lake and alot of trees hard to get away from them in this direction without having to move the dish along way away which may not help either. Who knows.
dosborne 2007-09-04, 07:56 AM No offense, but it sounds like you need to get someone to help that knows what they are doing. Aiming a dish at a satellite isn't hard......after a bit of practice.....but can be next to impossible if everything isn't exactly right.
If the mast is plumb, the elevation angle is set correctly for your location and you know the approximate direction to point the dish, then is usually is just a matter of swinging it left and right slowly within a small arc until you get some signal. Then peak it carefully.
Remember though you are aiming a 18-24" dish at an object 33000 mile up in space so you can't just throw it on a pole and expect to get signal.
Other factors can hamper your install.....a bad cable or connector could cause you to waste all day. Using a signal strength meter or taking a receiver to the dish with a short (known to be good) cable and portable TV (this is what I do - Walmart has a 5.5" B&W TV for $20) could help.
brad27 2007-09-04, 02:16 PM I am aware of what I have to do, I've done the install the first time...it's frustrating because nothing is working at all. Already checked the arm its plumb elevation is correct. cable is new and nothing still. but anyways Bell knows their **** don't they.
i hate tv 2007-09-04, 04:32 PM there are trees in the way, this may be the problem
the receiver could be fried too?
maybe the LNB is bad, do you have a spare to try?
alot of variables
maybe bring the receiver to a friends to verify that it isnt bad
then try the LNB at a friends
through the process of elimination, you can verify that all of your hardware is working, and then you "only" have to worry about aiming the dish
if you think the trees are in the way, move the dish as high as you can, and as far back from the trees as you can
good luck
Nimiq 1 2007-09-04, 04:44 PM If you are still paying a monthly charge for programming, ask for a Service Call, "No Signal".
Would cost you $75 but you would be watching TV, not hiding on the roof.....
haystack 2007-09-04, 04:52 PM Could brad sub to salt and pepper for $2.50 a month for a while and get a free install then he would also be ok for hd in the future?
Nimiq 1 2007-09-04, 04:57 PM I don't see why not. He would have to pay for the Upgrade then have it refunded....
haystack 2007-09-04, 05:08 PM brad if you want call expressvu and order a salt religious package that is on sat 82 it cost $2.50 a month and I think you have to keep it for a year They send installer to your house to install(82 is the hd sat as well) I think if you get sat 82 its automatic for 91 cancel salt after a year cost would be $3o
Plus you may find God or have a better chance of finding him there than up on the roof

Unless he falls from the roof while aligning the dish :)
brad27 2007-09-08, 08:12 PM Still unable to find signal. The trees may be a factor, I don't see how comparing to other sattelites in the area....I've tried several different areas even if aligning on its own post nothing would work....What I found was I could find the "wrong sattelite - echostar I believe 110" the siganl was up but white so I am able to get a signal from a sattelite just not the right sat....right cordiantes and all but no matter what nothing would turn up. I had a Bell guy working across the road for high speed phone lines he wasn't too familar with satellites but he was kind enough to go over with us. He suggesting on the antenna 4 or 5 feet above roof or on it's own pole further back from the house, he was definate it would work....tried both 10 feet above the house, a little tree around but not a whole lot, nothing he suggested worked lol. It will be interesting to see where they install this dish. I still have switch check as not recognized....what exactly does the switch check do and even with no signal should it be present or will it be present when signal is found?
Well if you found 110 then you know your cable is good and the lnb works. I think 91 is more south and perhaps higher. After you have located a sat, then run check switch. I'd unplug the receiver a bit before panning the sky again.
