This is not spam, I was referred to this website for this problem via an iPod forum. There is a site that is offering cell phones for suspicious prices, I would like your opinions.

My mom will not listen to me. <site url's removed> offer cell phones and say they are an "Authorized Rogers Retailer" and she bought two phones off them, and I think it may be a scam. A Moto Razr for $40 with a three year plan and something else. I kept telling her it was a scam and she went "I called them (number on website) and they said they were with them." I am just astonished that they were so blind as to fall for this. Every rule on the "scam website" points to that one. It even has spelling errors and says " Rogers telephony" at the bottom in the small text as a typo. The facts on it are ripped off wikipedia. In fact its not even mentioned in the 25 affiliates owned by Rogers on wikipedia. On wiki the link contained within the writeup for "Rogers Wireless" is a con and says "more information about rogers" you click and it brings you to that site. They are so blind to this and I cannot believe it. A member of the site that referred me here said it is owned by Amritech which is similarly close to Ameritech, and that they are listed as being affiliated with Rogers (Amritech, not Loudring) Their sites look the same as well.

My mother has also received 6 emails from them now saying something about thanks for ordering and here's your ticket # for assistance. 6! It then says that if there any problems reply back (I thought companies don't normally do that) or to call this number: 1-866-931-3282. It's just an automated message that gives selections for automated responses. Then at the end says "any questions about bills, finances, etc call this..." which is an actual Rogers number.

I have removed the URL's as per the rules of our forum and since its not really relevant to your question.

Regarding your issue. The old adage is that if something is "too good to be true" then it probably is a scam. If the prices are too low then I recommend you stick with a bricks and mortar retailer.

If you feel you must order from them (or already have) then my advice is to contact Rogers Wireless and discuss it with them. If something is wrong, then you should be reporting immediately to Rogers and NOT discussing here.

I understand that quite a few used phones are bought through ebay and other suppliers, sucessfully. As to the case mentioned, perhaps it is just a fraud to get your money for nothing, I cannot really say. I'm not sure how it would work as identity theft. You are of course aware that you needn't indentify yourself to buy and operate a pre-paid plan, so nothing could be stolen there.
