: Rebirth of the 2-Bay Bowtie Reflector OTA Mini-Antennas
roger1818 2007-05-02, 10:47 AM I just went to Channel Master's website and discovered that they have a new Model 4220 two-bay UHF antenna (http://www.pctinternational.com/channelmaster/0612/4220.html).

It will be interesting to see how well it performs. It obviously won't have as high a gain as a CM4221, but it might have a wider beam width (the polar plots they provide don't have the scale fully documented) and be good in urban and suburban areas. It is nice to see an alternative to the DB-2.
videobruce 2007-05-02, 11:03 AM It is their version of this:

stampeder 2007-05-02, 12:44 PM I split off these posts by videobruce and roger1818 into their own thread temporarily as sort of a news item because 2-bay Bowtie Reflectors have come and gone over the years and seem to be making a comeback with manufacturers.
Posts this past year by Dajad showed that he was having good luck with a TD DB-2 in central Toronto. Another series of posts by Zed showed that when he cracked open a TD Lacrosse it was very similar to a DB-2 under its plastic housing.
More testing, comparison, and real world results are required before we can state affirmatively that these are a good solution for those people not able to go with a 4-bay or 8-bay Bowtie Reflector or Corner Reflector Yagi. For those folks the options today are a Zenith Silver Sensor or Clone for indoors, or the batch of stealth and UFO antennas currently on the market for outdoors.
My best estimate at this stage of the game is that they are. :)
StoneyCreekOTA 2007-05-02, 02:35 PM Interesting that their website says 20 mile reception of channels 7-13 (VHF high) and 30 mile reception of UHF.
It will be interesting to see the price point on this antenna.
I will take a guess and say around $30-$35 Can.
dsspredator 2007-05-02, 04:24 PM $20.59 at warrenelectronics in the USA
roger1818 2007-05-03, 11:18 AM For those folks the options today are a Zenith Silver Sensor or Clone for indoors,
Although not specifically designed for indoor use, a 2-bay antenna is small enough that it is very feasible for indoor use and should produce results that are superior to a Silver Sensor. All you have to do is build some sort of stand for the antenna, and maybe install rubber eye protectors on the ends of the bow ties.
I am surprised no one had designed a good indoor, double bow tie antenna. There was one made in China and sold under several different brand names. Unfortunately they made it too narrow to work well for channels below 30.

microware 2007-05-03, 12:55 PM Hiya roger1818, that pic of the indoor double bow tie UHF antenna looks exactly like the one Radio Shack used to carry in their stores/catalog during the 1980's here in Canada. If I recall correctly, they dropped it from their product line sometime in the late 1980's or perhaps very early 1990's.
roger1818 2007-05-03, 01:23 PM Yes, I gather that both Radio Shack and Channel Master used to resell it under their own part numbers. I don't know the history of when each of them stopped selling them, but I don't think it is available anymore.
videobruce 2007-05-04, 07:18 AM The Pro Brand/Eagle Aspen version best price I have seen is $17 (US).
stampeder 2007-05-05, 02:46 PM CM4220: 20 x 17 x 5 in.
TD DB-2: 19 x 12 x 4 in.
DTV2BUHF: not provided on web page or in PDF file but assumed to be similar to above antennas.
The old Radio Shack model Roger and microware have discussed had a noticeably tiny reflector compared to the above models.

According to HDTV Primer (http://www.hdtvprimer.com/ANTENNAS/DoubleBow.html), it is only 12.5 inches wide. He also says the 4221 is 16 inches wide, so I am assuming that this is the width of the bowtie and not the reflector.
whatsup745 2007-05-07, 02:27 PM Yes 16" is the bowtie. The reflector is 20" wide.
