Hi,
I am trying to choose between these two sets:
Samsung LN-S4096D 40" 1080p @ $2099
OR
Samsung LN-S4692D 46" 720p @ $1899
Not sure which will be better for me. I like the idea of the bigger 46" screen, but will the 1080p of the 4096 be more 'future proof' once the HD format war has been sorted out??
Thanks for any advice,
Glenn

Bigger is always better, tho it depends on how close you are sitting to the tv. If you are farther than 15ft, get the bigger tv. If you are closer, get the smaller, 1080p tv.
One thing I have not ever heard about is someone who has connected a 1080p tv to their computer to use as their everyday monitor. I don't know if a 1920x1080 native res is good as an everyday resolution (might be tiny text on screen). But if you are not using your LCD as an everyday computer monitor, it's not a concern.

Hi there,
Since both models you are considering are from last year I would consider this:
Samsung 4061F (1080p) for CAD$2300
or
Samsung 4661F (1080p) for $3000
Asuming that you have made a mistake about the 4692 I would spend $100 more and get the new models with 3 HDMI.
Enjoy

I will be sitting 12 feet away from the set.
The prices are correct.
The Brick currently has the 4692 @ $1818 and Leons has stock of the 4096 which they are offloading @ $2099
I'm leaning towards the 4692 as I only have upscaled DVD's and HD cable.
At 12', you can certainly go large, or larger. See:

Wow, those are great prices!
a)I would go for the 4692.
At 12 ft you cant see any extra detail on a 40'' 1080p.
If it is possible go to a store (FS?) ask them to play 1080p content and you will notice that beyond about 8ft you start loosing the amazing crispness in the 40'' screen.
The 46 will give you extra immersion an with the money you save you can buy a good upscaling DVD player and you are all set until the HD battle is over.
A friend of mine bought the Sharp 4270 over the weekend and we watched a movie at 12-13ft away and i can tell you can go to 46'' when watching HD.
I think you are going for the most cost efficient solution so get the 4692, enjoy your TV, stop worrying about prices and new products and if you want to, you can upgrade your TV next year when everything is going to be 1080p and you can get a 46'' 1080p for the same price.
b)Ooooor you can buy the 4096 be happy for now and then buy something nicer in the future or keep it as a secondary set. It makes more sense as a long term investement, but you wont get any immediate benefit, specially at 12 ft and with lack of 1080p content.
c) Save some money and get a 42'' 1080p set that will be future-proof for a few yrs
It is really up to you: do you want to replace your tv once a year or r so? It used to be simpler to buy a TV but now is just as complicated as buying a car.just think about it, buy the set enjoy the purchase, remember that there will be better deals by the time you are opening the box. Just be happy with it.
I got a viewsonic 3752 for $900 watch it 12FT away, spend $100 in an OTA antenna and get almost 20 channels in HD for Free.
I am waiting for the end of the year to get a 42'' 1080p with 3 HDMI port for $2000 and I will then forget about buying a tv for a while. Thats my plan.
Whats yours?

I would take a quality 46" 720p set over a quality 40" 1080p set anyday, especially at that price.

Thanks Guys,
I went with the 4692.
At $1818 it was hard to resist. I even took my Oppo 981 down and hooked it up and stood 12 feet away. It looked fantastic.
Appreciate the responses.
