I'm using Bell Internet Unplugged, 3mbd 384kbu. Service just hit the floor about a week ago after 6 months of great use.

Now I'm interested in performing this modification and have begun researching the parts I will need.

I know I'll need the 24dBi 2500mhz grid antenna, they can be located easily enough... but would there need to be some kind of interface between the grid antenna and the modem itself, aside from the cabling?

I wish I knew more about antennae at this point, any help would be welcome. I plan on documenting this modification and providing pictures of the install should I get it working... I'll get it hooked up for sure... but some help would be awesome to ensure I get it working. It'd be a nice thread to have up for people who don't mind voiding warranties to enhance their product.

And like many, I'm sure, I is n00b with radio frequencies but want bigger tubes to the internets. A detailed guide to this modification on digitalhome.ca is just what the doctor ordered.

just read your post about service hitting the floor....i was getting 66 all summer.

for sept it was int he 40s....then the 30s. now i sit in the 20s, and it fluctuates between 6 and 46. yikes!

what is going on?! why not a more constant signal? i was about to go on the roof and see if the antenna it is on has shaken it loose and mispointed it...but that is wishful thinking. i think my service is nearly out!

i support breakers in his search to modify an antenna, but have NO clue how to do it or what to do. help help help! i cant let my signal get any lower or i wont be able to use the intern...e......t..........

I'm in need of the outdoor modem software. Could any one supply it for me. PLEASE ---- I can't find the disc. I called rogers and they said it only comes with the modem and they don't have a download link yet.

I have the Rogers External Modem for their Portable Internet Service and I did not use nor need any software to get it running.!!

It was simply Plug & Play......

there is a NextNet utility called "linkmonitor". if you google hard enough you can find it. but really it doesn't do anything other than report the signal strength on your PC, that you could find out by looking at the modem.

No software is needed but I would like to view the signal strength without having to climb up on the roof and look at the lights. If you have it I would love to have a copy again.

HDTV101, where can i get a 24dbi antenna like this in the picture? thanks

Please PM me if you can help.

Thanks
I bought 3 of the 24 dBi Grids off of this guy in Quebec plus a lot of other stuff. What I like about buying from Quebec is no PST and quick shipping practically overnight to Ontario.

what else did you buy in order to hook these up to your outdoor modem?

ordering the dish is easy...and from what nimiq1 has written in another post, opening the outdoor modem is not a problem....but what wires do i need?

i notice the lmr-400 coax cable as being something others have bought (on the same page as the grid antenna). if i bought a 25 foot length of that would i be ok? (so i can keep my modem under the eaves....and the grid antenna at the top of my ariel)

also, is the lightning arrestor needed? (am guessing yes...but need confirmation!)

We need to get inside the modems and find out where the antenna hook up is, what kind of hook-up it is, or how we can modify and appropriate adapter to hook up the wiring.

I'm going to cut mine in half today.

Dudler, what do those numbers you quoted mean? 40 - 30 - 20 now between 6 and 46.
Is this a modem signal strength reading you're getting?
I take it you're not with Rogers, as I don't have anything like this.
The only way I can see signal strength is to look up my tv tower to see the lights on the modem.

Are you guys running the modem through a router?
My modem has been rock solid, but when I notice a lag in downloading webpages, I just reset the router and it's all good again.

It's alot more than a little lag... for me, it's the transition from a usable connection to an unusable one over the course of a month.

I'm using a bell indoor subscriber unit, no software came with mine either.

Also, is there any chance that the demand for this service in some areas is far exceeding the capacity of the equipment that was set up by the ISP's?

Does anybody have a copy of the Expedience LinkMonitor software? Still can't understand why that wouldn't of came with the modem.

just to clarify...(as somebody asked about the scoring scheme i have to determine signal strength..)

i am using the rogers outdoor modem (NOT the indoor one). it is nextnet wireless, has no lights on it, and uses expeidence linkmonitor software.

hope we are all talking about opening and modifying the same unit?!

the dude

ps. still awaiting info regarding how nimiq opened his....it looks pressure fit to me, but will have to try to open it later when i have time to mess around with it!

pps. i will offer the exact model number when i take it off my antenna/roof...

we're definitely talking about different units here.

same idea though.

Unfortunately for me, it seems that the majority here have the Rogers outdoor model whereas I have the Bell indoor model.

I believe it was Nimiq 1 who mentioned that the inside of his Rogers modem contained a 24dBi antenna already. That's out of spec from this unit (http://www.nextnetwireless.com/assets/spec_sheets/New_RDM_Spec.pdf), which is what I'm currently using; the only difference is that mine is branded as an Expedience and is missing the M logo.

dudler, would you be able to mail me a copy of that linkmonitor software?

Dudler, your modem sounds different than mine.
I too am using the Rogers outdoor modem, but mine is a Motorola Expedience Compact Outdoor Subscriber Unit like the one here (http://www.nextnetwireless.com/assets/spec_sheets/Compact_OSU_Spec_FNL.pdf).

It has 5 lights along the bottom of the unit that indicate signal strength.
I didn't have to install any additional software on my computer to get the service running.

Sorry guys, having PC issues here, lost the Pics.

Basically it was dead easy to open the unit, 4 small plastic lugs, 2 at the bottom, then 1 each side.

Large PCB inside, with just a very thin coax connection on the inside.

It would be just a matter of extending this to connect to an external unit.

I will open it up again tomorrow, or Thursday, take more pics and post them.

My unit is the Rogers External Modem, says dB on the back.

hey nimiq..

i am thinking we may have the same modem. does your have lights on it (mine doesn't!)

anyway, as you seem to have made some strides in figuring this out, do you think you could make an inventory list of what is needed from the above website (cellulaire extreme) in order to hook up a 24dbi grid antenna?

i _think_ that beyond the antenna and lightning arrestor, cabling is needed. but, is it the lmr400 or, does it need to have different ends (as the end at the antenna is a different size than the one coming out of the modem?) notice how the five foot length of cable (on the screen showing what others have bought (while in the shopping cart screen) shows two different ends? this part has me confused!

also, message me if you need the software breaks. i will try to help you out.

That model looks a little easier to break into than what I'm dealing with, unfortunately. heh heh, for me, i mean. :P
