: Movie Central and the Big Lebowski - Encore Ave.

2007-04-07, 12:47 AM
I always thought that Movie Central aired their movies uncut, I just finished watching the big lebowski on EA2 and I swear it must've been the basic cable version, since ALL the profanity was dubbed, and several scenes/subplots (the entire John Turturro esp.) were cut altogether . This was very, very disappointing.

Well it wasn't MC technically...it was Encore Ave. And since it was the channel that is offered on cable and not just digital, maybe they had to change it in order to air it.

but doesn't MC really own all 6 channels? (mc1-4, encore and the other)? I remember I used to have to pay extra for the other two (which went away some time ago), if stopping to pay for it meant that now they air atrociously censored 'cable' versions of their movies instead of the director's cuts, well, what's the point of the channels in the first place.

You don't pay extra for EA now, as it's included in a cable package.
Yes they own all 6 channels.

Last night, the Big Lebowski was on EA2 on both analog and digital, however, the movie was censored, removing the nudity (as little as there was) and all the swearing.

While adding some unintentionally hilarious dialog, it was rather odd that they did this.

Is this a normal occurance for Movie Central now?

DUDE! we noticed the same thing.... i hope this isn't a path they are going to take all the time.. although it's kinda funny to hear some of the nonsense they replaced swearing with, if I wanted to watch a movie chopped to pieces, I would watch tbs or some garbage..

slippery slope! and we have started to slide..

...I was the one who started the thread on the other forum, I wanted to show the movie (one of my favorites) to my girlfriend and I was pretty bummed at the huge cuts both in plot (I was looking forward to showing her Turturro's character) and in language ("You see what happens when you have fun with a stranger in the Alps?", cmon, gimme a break).

If I wanted to watch network censored movies I'd watch TBS, not pay for MC, I am waiting for moviecentral.ca to come back up to send them an email about this, hope others will do as well.

You're not paying for EA anymore. You pay for MC.

I have merged the threads, into the appropriate forum, I have deleted some posts which became unnecessary after the merge and I have done a minor edit to one post.

It is my understanding from the above that the channel in question is no longer a "pay/premium" channel, therefore, that would explain the edited version shown there.

If the movie were actually on the MC channel, then there would be a reason for the complaint. As I see it, there is not - it's simply a fact of life when watching some (non premium) channels.

Of course, just because a channel is not premium, it doesn't mean that the channel will not show an unedited version of a movie - CBC and Bravo do it all the time, however EA must have made a decision regarding their (current) audience and they showed an edited version.

Why do you feel the need to edit someone elses post? Either delete it for violating the forums rules or leave it alone.

I edited the post because the first line of the edited post said something like "I started the thread in the other forum" (before editing), which was self-evident and incorrect now that the threads are merged, since there is no "other" forum.

I noticed the same thing with "Casino" the other night on EA. Of course there are a ton of swears in the movie so it was very noticeable. Not impressed.

I just gave them a call now that the website is up and I could find a phone # and we'll see what they say: if you go on moviecentral.ca and you click on 'encore avenue' it says 'Two channels of uncut & commercial free movies from the 70s, 80s and 90s', so if they started airing network versions of the movies vs uncut well, they ought to change the website as well... I'll post back here if they return my phone call.

I was looking through the 35 page printable monthly schedule for April that Movie Central provides for all 8 movie channels, and I noticed that for the showing of the Big Lebowski on EA2 it says it's an edited version but on April 20th it's on EA1 and it says it's unedited. Strange.

2007-04-15, 04:37 PM
I think that is because EA2 is part of the regular cable package in some places.

2007-04-16, 12:42 PM
True, but: it seems to be a change in policy for EA to be running edited movies CBC showed The Big Lebowski uncensored last Saturday night. Commercials too of course, but if an over-the-air channel can air it uncut, why can't a cable movie channel that claims to air unedited movies? The hatchet job they perform when airing "unedited" movies isn't exactly a very good advertisement. Anyone that wants to view unedited movies won't choose to subscribe to EA1 with "free" EA2 as an example. Anyone that wants edited movies "edited for TV" with be sorely disappointed with EA1, since EA1 does air unedited movies. Corus hasn't exactly shown exemplary decision making lately in regards to Movie Central (their HD movie catalogue lags far behind TMN), nor have they been very effective at addressing problems ( moviecentral.ca has been broken for months). Add this short sighted decision to the list.

2007-04-16, 06:52 PM
short sighted or not it's not like unfortunately we have any choice in terms of what movie channel to get, it's either MC or nothing :(
