Sony's new PlayStation 3 video game has gone from top dog to underdog in record time.

Despite the buildup and hype around its arrival in November, the PS3 has been outsold so far — at a rate of almost 2-to-1 — by the Nintendo Wii. (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/2007-03-19-ps3-woes_N.htm)

For Sony, that performance "is simply abysmal," says Newsweek's N'Gai Croal. "The PS3 is sucking wind right now.

Yep. And Sony continues to lose its key franchises. Recently it was announced that Devil May Cry 4 was in development for the Xbox 360 as well as the PS3. Sony is losing all its key titles way too quickly. All they've got left is Metal Gear Solid, God Of War, and Final Fantasy 13.

Metal Gear will probably be my first PS3 title. Only 1/2 year away.

Word is that Microsoft is going hard after other supposed Sony exclusives... giving that the PS3 installed base is going to be small compared to the 360, I think other Sony devs might jump ship.

Sony's day only got worse... after the DMC 4 announcement, it was learned that Ace Combat 6 was going to be a 360 EXCLUSIVE, after being a stalwart Sony franchaise for years...

Without taking away from the argument that PS3 is struggling to get software onto the streets, I don't think it's fair to compare it against the Wii.

The Nintendo machine is for children and casual gamers. It's like comparing mopeds to motorcycles. For the most part, Nintendo is not drawing business away from MS or Sony. I think they have reinvigorated a totally different market segment.

The upcoming X360v2 is the real challenger to the PS3, and its big lead in userbase is a very serious problem for Sony.

There has always been more than one gaming console to be chosen. PS2 co existed with the original xbox and the xbox 360 for some time and held up.

There is going to continue to be the PS3 and the xbox360v2. Neither is going to "win" as they have their own market share and will continue to co-exist. There will be people that turn to PS3 from xbox and vice-versa, in this instance Sony just got a late start.

The proponents of each will continue to sing praises and take every opportunity to bash the competition.

Some people like Ford, others like GM same holds true in gaming.

That being said, my view is that HD DVD and BD will continue to co-exist and have their own niche markets as well.

I remember when the PS2 pre-hype literally killed the Dreamcast. Sony promised a lot. Developers were jumping ship before the PS2 was even released. The hype didn't match the final product, but it was too late by then. Each generation, I buy every major console, but I'm two consoles behind on this one. I don't have a Wii or a PS3... yet. I'm glad Nintendo is doing better than they were with the Gamecube, but I love video games so much that I hate to see any of the companies fail miserably. The PS3 isn't a total failure yet, but it sure is having a rough time. One of the other exclusives it doesn't have is Grand Theft Auto. There's also Resident Evil. Even the Dreamcast managed to have that for a year or two. I hope Sony manages to pull its socks up in the software department. I want a PS3, but I just won't buy one until it has at least two or three must have titles. Metal Gear alone doesn't cut it for me. I got bored with that series ˝ way through Metal Gear Solid 2. It's what I would call a "reviewer's game" or a "fanboy's game". MGS4 is going to have to score at least a 9.0 to get me to even bat an eye. If it's anything less, I'll pass it off as a rerun.

PS3 vs. Wii? What's the point?

There is no comparison between the PS3 and Wii, as mentioned above. Wii has its own supporters and I assume they are not the same people that would buy a PS3.

Consoles don't need exclusive content to survive. PS3, unlike dreamcast, is established and backed by a huge, multinational company. That alone will ensure the survival of the system. As more games are available, and more people buy 1080p sets, both consoles will continue to grow. PS3 may not catch-up to xbox (it has more than a year head-start), but it will contniue to grow.

The Nintendo machine is for children and casual gamers.

Maybe they fit under the "casual gamer" banner, but my Fiancé and her mother both enjoy playing Wii! You couldn't get either of them to glance sideways at a PS3 or a 360.

Wii is for everybody.

The Nintendo machine is for children and casual gamers.

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent
Scarface: The World is Yours
Medal of Honor: Vanguard
No More Heroes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDSot5r1TzM)

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers
Opoona
Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors
Fire Emblem: The Goddess of Dawn

The Wii may have more child friendly games but it doesn't lack in terms of hardcore gamer type of games.

Also Guitar Hero & Katamari are supposedly coming to all systems. the PS3 is definatly going to suffer as it loses out on it's exclusives.

Isn't Call of Duty also on the Wii. I think people are stuck in the 90's when it comes to Nintendo.

They have gone out of their way to make this a family unit and yes families have adults and now all families have a HDTV.

Comparing the 2 makes sense to me.

I think comparisons of the two are fair but for totally different reasons. XBox 360 & PS3 tried to compete for the hard core gamer so they went after all the biggest and best bells & whistles. The people at Nintendo took what has been called a Blue Ocean Strategy and saw that the market for a console is everybody and not just the hard core gamers and that's how they attacked it.

Hard to argue with the success so far.

Now now James, how dare you post a negative link toward the BD last hope. These dust catchers have been tanking for ever (based on what is true and what Sony wants the public to believe) I know from managers at stores and through friends in the game development industry alot of people are pissed about the lack of sales, but the BD faithful keep looking the other way in denial.

Well, now you're linking two unrelated sets of data. The sluggish performance of the PS3 in its first quarter is plain to see.

Likewise, Blu-Ray blowing away HDDVD to the tune of 2:1 sales ratio is also plain to see.

You can't have it both ways, so what's it going to be?

Its funny that when people list reasons to buy consoles, its to play certain games. I have NEVER read a post here or anywhere else where they were stoked to buy a PS3 specifically to play movies. Consoles are about games.

Has there been a discussion like this:
Man, I keep getting killed by that damn berserker! I gotta get my pal to help me on co-op mode tonite.
Man, my arm is sore from playing Wii Tennis last nite!

Man, I cant wait to have a BLACKHAWK DOWN viewing party on my PS3 at my house!

SONY put too much faith in the supposed "value" of including a BD player and assumed that PS2 owners and fans would automatically scoop one up at any price. Just because of the success of the PS2, SONY assumes they will also be PS3 buyers by default.

What they failed to clue in on is they are coming LATE to the party, with nothing really to show AND they want to charge an astronomical price? What arrogance.

It was recently reported that SONY just lost another of its game exclusives: Devil May Cry4, one of their most prized assets. And, if there is any truth to the BLACK XBOX shipping in April, then that would just be another nail in the PS3s coffin.

Speaking of exclusives, imagine if the future God of War franchaise were to be multi-platform? The tagline for God of War 2 is "The End Begins"

How prophetic would that be?

When I look at the PS3 (price not withstanding) for what it is: a gaming console, I have nothing but respect for it: huge potential and great heritage (pre-Battery and Rootkit SONY). I honestly want it to succeed; competition would force developers to keep cranking out amazing stuff.

Whats unfortunate is that at the moment I have more reasons to dislike the PS3 than I do to like it.

Which is pathetic considering there are easily FIVE TIMES more Blu-ray players now than there are HD DVD.

Again, you can't have it both ways. There are many on this forum who argue vigourously that PS3's cannot be counted as BD players because people bought them for games not movies.

So which is it?

I really don't recall that being an issue but regardless, I am stating the facts.

I guess I come in on the other end of the spectrum. I bought my PS3 SPECIFICALLY to be able to watch Blu Ray movies. Now, to be completely honest, I have played games on it, but with the exception of Resistance (I had to get at least 1 PS3 game, not all that impressed) they have all been PS2 games. Ever since I picked one up, my HD DVD player for the 360 has been gathering dust and all next gen movies purchased have been on Blu Ray.

I'm sure down the line I will play more PS3 games, but for the time being, the player is primarily used to watch movies. So should my PS3 be counted towards the number of Blu Ray drives sold? Of course!!!!

Based on some perspectives, my machine shouldn't be counted in the PS3 / 360 / Wii numbers since I bought it as for movies and NOT for games...
