"I have NEVER read a post here or anywhere else where they were stoked to buy a PS3 specifically to play movies."

thats really the only selling point for the ps3. bluray is its only advantage over 360. Its priced too high to be used for only games. IMO, sales wont go up until the new grand theft auto comes out.

...or SOCOM4...or NHL 2008 or Rainbow 6...

Hell, as far as I'm concerned, PS3 hasn't even launched yet. There's a great world ahead of us yet.

If I'm mad at Sony for anything, it's for taking my money in December, months ahead of any opportunity to really rock and roll with it.

I posted earlier in another thread wondering how many purchased a PS3 primarily as a BD player. I dont think your numbers are small, either. In fact, I wouldnt be surprised if the split is near even between gamers and videophiles.

So dont think your purchase "doesnt count" just because you purchased it for movies. In fact, yours is the market SONY specifically targeted for the PS3: non-gamers purchasing their gaming machine.

Whether it was purchased for BD or games is irrelevant from a bottom line POV, a PS3 was sold.

I'd say the same for the 360 in about the same time frame, but the PS3 is a little later in that department. It took until last year about this time for the 360 to really get a shot in the arm with Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It still wasn't until August when we got something as different as Dead Rising. The PS3 still doesn't have any "9's" in it's line up yet. Hopefully they are on the brink of releasing a few.

Ha ha! Pepsi/Coke? I drink both.

360 is good right now, but the 2nd gen PS3 games like Ratchet look unbelievable. There will be a big gap by Christmas.

Also, PS3 will be about 4 million worldwide by end of March. 360 might be 11 (being on the market three times longer).

Compare install base in 2-3 years.

Its doing very well in the UK.

It outsold xbox 360 over 2:1 in its opening weekend compared to when the 360 was launched

In fairness to Microsoft, the 360 launch was staggered by a couple of weeks, and stock levels were such that they had some serious difficulties keeping it on UK shelves. Comparatively, Sony staggered their launch by a few months and have not had the same stock issues lately.

Not saying that the numbers don't tell the story, but just not the whole story IMO.

I completely agree with lewdvig! By xmas the picture will change dramatically. PS3 will have a competitive games line-up coupled with lots more BD movies. I think in the long run the PS3 and 360 market shares will be closely matched in NA and Europe (no hope for 360 in Japan which is a huge gaming market not to be forgotten in this debate)

To me this is not about one winning and the other loosing... I think the 2 companies will be closely matched in this space with each having it's pros/cons... and given their respective strengths, they will continue trying to outdo each other

So this means that they'll be very motivated to give us the best gaming and entertainment experiences that they can... and to me that's what really matters... So except for shills / floggers being paid by one or the other party or employees, I don't understand why anyone would want one winning and the other loosing!

Without taking away from the argument that PS3 is struggling to get software onto the streets, I don't think it's fair to compare it against the Wii.

The Nintendo machine is for children and casual gamers. It's like comparing mopeds to motorcycles. For the most part, Nintendo is not drawing business away from MS or Sony. I think they have reinvigorated a totally different market segment.

The upcoming X360v2 is the real challenger to the PS3, and its big lead in userbase is a very serious problem for Sony.
There are far more "casual" gamers than hardcore. That = more consoles sold = more money for the manufacturer, especially what the manufacturer isn't losing hundreds of dollars per unit sold.
