Once again the CBC shows why it should have it's funding cutoff

No problem sending the HD truck to Detroit for Stevie Y's sweater to be raised and show the game.

But you French haters at the CBC white tower in the Centre of the Universe have once again shown your true colours - even if Ken Dryden came from T.O.

It's nice that CHRO is showing the game - but it's no so nice that Expressvu has blacked me out once again - because I don't have C.I.

So I put my coat on and trudge across the street - to watch the game at a neighbour's - who has the second rate service - Star Choice

They're not even showing the actual game. Why bring the HD truck for a 30 minute ceremony? They showed the Wings/Ducks game on Stevie Y night.

Ken Dryden was actually born in Hamilton.

CBC doesn't have the rights to broadcast the game. You can't blame them for not braodcasting a game they don't have the contractual right to broadcast. CHRO is broadcasting the game because they have a Senators local rights package.

I wondered about this CBC decision as well:

A) Canadian born player who played his entire pro career in US (And is now US citizen) having number retired in a US city on a Monday nite - followed by game between 2 US based teams

CBC Braintrust - let's show ceremony + game in HD

B) Canadian born player (who played for Canadian team - not the Leafs) having number retired in a Canadian city on a Monday nite - followed by game between 2 Canada based teams

CBC Braintrust - let's show ceremony in SD - not show game

Really - How does 1 make decisions like this?

Remember the Bernie Geoffrion sweater raising ceremony (just after Bernie passes away) - Quebec saw it while the rest of the country was treated to that talking head Ron McLean. It's time for Harper's underling Oda to send a message to the CBC - "you are a national network"

I'm surprised this didn't happen at a Saturday Night home game.

THe Habs were playing in Toronto on Saturday therefore they couldn't raise Drydens Jersey then.

Blame the Habs for doing it on a Monday. Their contract with the NHL did not allow them to show the game.

CBC does not have the legal right to show mid-week regular season games involving Canadian teams. With a couple of exceptions (eg. opening night), only TSN has the right to pick a mid-week game for national broadcast. Even then, they are limited by number to so many. They did their schedule at the beginning of the season and this game wasn't on it. They can't just pick up a game that has already been committed to a local rights holder (as this one was by the Senators who sold the game to CHRO).

The Habs knew this game could not be nationally broadcast in Canada by either CBC or TSN and chose to go ahead because of the symmetry of retiring 29 on the 29th.

CBC was able to pick up the Stevie Y game because it originated in the US and only required that the game not be on TSN's schedule and that TSN didn't want to pick it up.

It could have been a different Saturday then.

The Habs have retired Savard's # 18 on November 18 and Dryden's # 29 on January 29. It is kind of a concept... Anyway if I remember correctly the Habs asked both Savard and Dryden before the season which game they preferred to have their ceremony and they choosed these 2 games.

As for the game being "nationally broadcast", every Canadiens game are "national", in french, on RDS.

I think alot of you people just like complaining, theres this thing called 'Contracts' and 'Rights' which prohibits cbc from just showing ANY game they would like to. CBC cant just pick up any game they choose especially not when the rights are already assigned to other networks (a local Ottawa station and rds) TSN would have been the best bet to pick it up, but like it has already been noted the jersey retirement was not on the schedule at the beginning of the season.

Broadcast in HD?
No, SD only. RDS plans to broadcast every Canadiens home games in HD starting in October 2007. For away games in HD, no annoucements have been made yet.

There was a press conference confirming these two dates on September 13th, so it was known before the season. The press conference was cancelled because of the Dawson shooting that happened that same day but anyway the dates were known two days before, on September 11.

Why would Dryden have chosen a Sens game over a Leafs game? Wouldn't it be a natural to choose a game in Montreal vs. the Leafs on a Saturday night given the fact that Dryden was an exec with the Leafs for much of the past decade?

Toronto plays(ed) in Montreal on three Saturday nights - Oct 28, Dec. 2 and Mar. 17. I can see Dryden not wanting the event while he was still running for Liberal leader but then the natural night to do this would be March 17.
