: ZIP DVD Rental Question

I'm considering zip.ca (though thanks to oberst for mentioning cinemail as I'd never heard of it).

Most of the complaints about zip.ca that all over the internet seem to be about new movie availability and the time it takes to ship dvds. In my situation I'm primarily interested in foreign and older films that are harder to find and I wouldn't be getting that many movies - at most two per week, but mostly one film per week would be fine for me. So it sounds like the common problems with zip.ca would not affect me - what do you think?

Cinemail seems to have a fairly good selection of the type of films I want to see but unless I sign up at the zip.ca website I can't see what's available there.

Could some of you who've experience with these services make a recommendation? How's the Cinemail customer service? (I'm impressed with their website and forthright remarks about having to wait for new movies).

Thanks.

Andrew1, I haven't tried Cinemail but you can do a rough comparison by looking at this Canadian DVD rental site:

http://www.dvdinfo.ca/

You'll note that Zip has a larger inventory and a slightly higher percentage of some types of titles such as Criterion.

I think you're right that the Zip "issues" likely won't be an issue for you.

My interests are mostly foreign films, TV shows or hard-to-find DVDs and Zip has been good for me.

Neilcamp, thanks.

I looked at that website with reviews. I decided to go with Cinemail after doing a search of their selection of movies. Since about 90% of all the foreign movies I'm interested in are also available on Cinemail and they seem to have better service I figured I'd give them a go.

I got my first three movies - free preview - three days after registering so I thought that was fast enough (from Winnipeg to near Toronto) for my purposes.

I'm looking into signing up with these guys but I was wondering if any of the issues already mentioned have been resolved.I noticed one of the main complaints was about caps on monthly shipments, but I noticed on their site they have a 3 DVD at a time plan for $24.95 with unlimited shipments.
Also, does anybody know where they're located?

ZIP's HQ is in Ottawa, and they have distribution centres in Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver as well. They used to fly their shipments from Ottawa to the Halifax Canada Post plant, which would have got close to local times in that direction, but there is some evidence that they've stopped doing this. There are a couple of Halifax customers who post on the forums at www.onlinedvdrentalguide.ca who can probably give you firsthand experience as to delivery times. It really all depends on Canada Post (and also how many shipments come from Ottawa vs. the more distant warehouses).

If I HAVE to see a new release I just go to the local video store, otherwise I am really enjoying seeing some old tv shows and non mainstream movies again not available anywhere else with zip.
