I don't know how it happened, but my daughter's PC which used to have 3 user accounts, now after turning the computer on, it starts, and the left side of the login screen appears, but there is no way to sign in.

The right side of the 'logon' screen is blank. When I drag the mouse over where the accounts used to be, there are no 'invisable' user accounts on the page indicated by the pointer.

Any ideas how to fix this ?... or what might have happened ?

Have you tried pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del twice while at that empty screen?
Do you get the old style Win2000 type of login window?

Hi diogen,

Yes I got the old style logon screen by doing that.

Try to reset the welcome screen.
User Accounts in Control panel: Change the way users log on or off; Uncheck both; Reboot.
Go back to the same window and check them both; reboot.

If this doesn't help, some system files must be damaged.

None of the old username/passwords work to get me in so that I can access Control Panel.

Can you log in as administrator? Or have you renamed the account?
Do you remember the password?

That doesn't work either.

Can I get to Control Panel in Safe mode ?

How do I get into Safe mode ? I've forgotten all those key prompts, sorry.

F8 after the BIOS screen.
It will still prompt you for a username/password.

It's still looking for a password (of which none work)...

Thanks for your help diogen, I just do a fresh install. It's a great cure-all.
