Hi Guys, I would like to buy a new Receiver from my home theater. Here is what I already have:

2xPradigm Titan
2xParadigm Atom
1xPAradigm C170
1xParadigm PDR10

I am thinking about the new Pioneer VSX1016Tx. I really like the HDMI switching feature but I'm open to anything else. My budget is between 500-800$ TKX

For a similar setup I have a Sherwood Newcastle 771 on order. No HDMI, but it does have lip sync which was a major factor for me. I'll let you know how it sounds with the Titan's in a few weeks when it's all set up. In theory the amplification sound quality should be the main advantage of the Sherwood.

There is a real good review of the Yamaha RXV659 at Audioholics.

It should fall into your price range.

I'd say go with the 1016tx. Most bang for your buck, features and functions you'll never use, but fun to play with.
I wish i had waited, got my 1015 for myself last christmas. I'll need to upgrade someday, but that'll give me an excuse to put the 1015 in the bedroom. ;)

If you are looking for the best sound quality at this dollar; the SN 771 wins. Fewer bells & whistles - better amps.

If you don't need 7.1, the 5.1 model - SN 756 is an even better unit

It's good to hear that you share my optimism. Honestly because the whole package was fairly inexpensive, we didn't do as thorough auditioning as we could have (I was helping a friend buy). Yeah, it's a little shy on features, but has the most important ones that we were looking for (lip sync, 3 component in, component upconversion, parametric room optimisation). It's just a good fit for my friend's purposes. No HDMI but unless a receiver has full 1.1 capabilities it's of no use anyways IMO - just a switch isn't that useful on its own.

InTandem is the Canadian distributor. If you email them, they'll send you retailer names

Hello all,

I need some help picking a decent receiver. The things that I wanted from it are multi-room/zone, HDMI 1080p compatible and 1080p video upconvert.
I don't want (or able) to spend a fortune on this.

I liked the looks/specs from the new Sony STRDA5200ES.

Or what about the Yamaha HTR-6090
Yamaha HTR-6090 (http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=451765)

It will be working with a Sony KDL46XBR2 and I still have to get surround speakers but i'm thinking of getting Mirage Nanosats for their size (if you have any thoughts on that as well please jump on it).

Any recommendations/suggestions?

Thanks in advance and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Welcome to DHC! Between the two receivers you have selected, I would lean towards the Yamaha. But keep in mind that neither model is capable of scaling all inputs to 1080p, they are only capable of repeating 1080p over HDMI and converting all inputs to HDMI.

Another model you may want to audition is the Denon AVR-2807.

Enjoy!

I've been looking for a new avr myself, and here's what i've gathered so far...

Actually the STR-DA5200es is being marketed for its full hd 1080p upscaling ability with its new 10bit Genesis FLI8668 chip. It can upscale all analog inputs to 1080p over hdmi. Now how good is this scaling is questionable...

The htr-6090 i believe is similar to the rxv2600 line, which is a nice receiver with good reviews. I dunno if the 6090 will be able to pass a full 1080p signal thru hdmi. You may want to check on that. But if its like the 2600, then it can upscale analog inputs to as high as 1080i.

The Denon 2807 is also a great reviewed receiver. It's Denon quality and will pass a 1080p signal thru hdmi. But its got no upscaling ability other then de-interlacing ability -480i to 480p.

Another avr to check out is the Pioneer elite tsx-84 or 82. They have similar features to the yamaha 2600. the 84 model has 4hdmi in.

hope that helps, and good luck.

According to Sony it is not capable of upconverting all analog inputs to 1080p:

HDMI Up Conversion (Input sources up to 1080i) Composite, s-video and component video sources can be converted to HDMI output, minimizing the number of connections needed from the receiver to the television display.

Yes, the 6090 is capable of passing full 1080p over HDMI, as is the Sony ES. ;)

Hmm I might be wrong, Sony contradicts itself on the specs page:

Up Conversion: Yes (HDMI Up Conversion from Component, S-Video and Composite to 1080p)

For a demo of the str-da5200es check out
http://www.sonystyle.com/intershoproot/eCS/Store/en/demos/STRDA5200ES/

It's got a demo of the gui and 1080p upconversion, its the only receiver on the market currently that does this in the price range.

Looks like the htr-6090 is similar to the updated v2700/1700 line, so accepts the 1080p

I'm also in the market for a receiver.
Have you given any thought into the Pioneer Elite VSX-84TXSI

I looking at something that will still be good come 3 yrs down the road! :) but that can properly upscale to 1080P.

I checked out the link to the Sony STRDA5200ES. I then went to look at the 3200ES which when compared to the 5200ES appears to be the same. Except that the 5200 upconverts to 1080p and the 3200 to 1080i. Am I right to assume this is due to the Faroudja DCDi chip? I couldn't find any information on the 3200 having this chip but then niether did the 5200 indicate this except in the link provided.

I've been looking at the Yamaha HTR-5990. It has more zones than the HTR-6090, and it's less expensive.

The 6090 has an iPod dock, but I don't need that.
The 6090 has HDMI 1.2a whereas the 5990's HDMI version is unspecified.

Anyone know of any more significant differences?

I belive the yamaha 5990 is comparable to the old rxv1600 and the newer 6090 is comparable to the rxv1700. The main differences are the 1700 loses thx select2 but gains ability to pass 1080p while the 1600 could only pass 1080i.

One advantage of the HTR-6090 is that it has outputs for up to 10 speakers (with the addition of a pair of front 'presence' speakers, placed further back than the normal front speakers).

The user manual indicates that those front presence speaker outputs can alternately be used for a pair of speakers in a different room, thus allowing 7.1 sound in one room and stereo sound in a different room, at the same time from two different sources. At least that is my understanding after reading the manual, but I don't understand how that's possible with only 7 amplifiers. So I could be wrong.

I am looking for a good home theatre reciever, not the "best", I would like to spend around $500, but would go higher if quality or required features aren't in the recievers I'm looking at. I know I've got a wide variety so far, but here is what I'm looking at:

Denon 1507,1907,2307CI

Pioneer 816, 1015,1016,or one of the Elite's

HK 140

I am building a conservative home theater system to go with my 45" Sharp. I wanted to avoid a cheaper theatre in a box system, so I know it will cost for better components, but would like to stay definately below $2500 and closer to $1500 for everything would be better. I don't listen to anything loud, but clarity and depth are fairly important.

Thanks, APA
