HDMI PassThrough will pass on the decoded audio from a player such as an HD DVD. In such case, there is no processing by the receiver.

This ability is required to get DD TrueHD and DTS-HD from an HD DVD player. It passes LPCM data.

The Denon 2307CI/887 seems to be the best bet for an HDMI receiver with 1080P passthru. I have heard a lot of good things about it and I can get this in Canada at my local shop instead of ebay, so thats a plus.

Anyone have anything negative about this receiver?

I currently have a Yamaha HTR-5740 receiver, and I want to upgrade.

Other than this reciever overheating at higher volumes when in surround modes I have been happy.

I am looking for a receiver that includes THX select. I currently use component cables for my DVD and DCT.. but if the price is right I would consider HDMI as I can use either.

I am going sell my current receiver for 100-150 bucks, and can put out about 500 more... so max 650.00 taxes in hopefully.

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

I have a PS3 and was going to wait for receivers that pass/switch HDMI 1.3 but I am thinking that may not be necessary. I am looking to take advantage of the HDMI uncompressed sound from the Blu-Ray player.
Do you think I should wait for 1.3 receivers and if not what would be some receivers I should look at that would be able to pass the HDMI signal through to my projector (switch) and be able to take advantage of the uncompressed sound from the PS3's Blu-ray player? I have a small room so big power and big cost are not good.
I have done a bit of reading on this already but I am still a bit confused.
Thanks in advance.

Please let me re-iterate:

Any prices in the A/V receiver forum must be MSRP or street pricing (no retailer discussions).

Retail Pricing discussions, where to buy etc are not allowed anywhere but the shopping forums.

Based on the research that I've done so far, I would recommend looking at the Sony DA5200ES. So far, it looks like it has it all (except HDMI v1.3)

Good reviews: http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/receivers/1939/sony-str-da5200es-av-receiver.html and http://reviews.cnet.com/Sony_STR_DA5200ES_AV_receiver_7_1_channel/4505-6466_7-32058603.html

3 HDMI inputs. Can pass and upcovert all inputs (incl analog) to 1080p using Farouja DCDi. Good video performance (except some mixed results on upconverting SD reported by CNET) and great audio performance.

Also the price is pretty decent at around US$1,500 MRSP but I'm sure that it can be obtained cheaper

Definitely worth checking out (I would have looked at it if I was upgrading, but I won't be doing that probably for another year or so)...

I was hoping there was a bit cheaper option for me.
Also, for some reason I cant bring myself to by a Sony receiver never mind one that is $1500 US.

Quick and easy question

Got it pinned down to either the Marantz SR5001 or the Onkyo TX-SR674. Anyone has had a chance to compare these 2. Or any reason to pick one over the other ?

Thanx

Pardon my bad spelling in titile I can't edit it

Why do all the receivers have to be so friggin complicated. My head hurts making this decision.
Please everyone that is smarter than me help me get the best cost effective receiver for my setup!
I guess my biggest concern is I need a receiver that can pass 1080p (for the future if I change my projector) and one that can handle the uncompressed 5.1 HDMI from my PS3.

I agree with you so much mel, I think I have pinned it down to the Marantz or Onkyo, but there is so much hesitation, help from the pros would be appreciated

From what I can I gather so far the only problem would be that HDMI 1.1 cannot send the SACD signal and cannot pass 7.1 uncompressed. Neither of these are a big issue for me since I dont have 7 speakers and only own one SACD.
Here is a ton of info on the Onkyo 674:

maddog04: How do you think the Marantz SR5001 or the Onkyo TX-SR674 compare to the Sony DA5200ES?

I have not looked at the Marantz and Onkyo yet, but I do like Sony's ability to upconvert all inputs including Component, Composite, S-Video etc to 1080p and output them on HDMI.

I think you could buy both the Marantz and the Onkyo for the price of the Sony. :)
(Oh crap, i mentioned the word 'price' outside of the Digital Deals thread now I am done for)
The Sony looks like a great machine but it's quite a bit of cash.

Funny thing is after all this research, I went for the Denon avr987, was able to get a really good deal and it seems to be the receiver that has the less possible problems and the most futur proofing built in. This forum and avs were my most valuable sources ( besides my ears )should get it either tomorrow or monday so will let you know. The Audyssey MultEQxt and Al24 processing made it for me ( the right price also, Denon is I think a bit pricier in Canada than the States compared to other brands )

Basically I need help! I go to the big box stores and don't get alot of real help, and heard lots of horror stories about trusting big box sales people. Anyway I got a good deal on a set of Infinity ModulusII speakers, they seem to be fairly highly rated on some sites so I took a chance the price was rite. I figure 800-1500 bucks should be enough to get me a reciever that won't be outdated entirely in 6 months, I'm sure all the answers I need are on this site somewhere however sorting it all out is a task on its own.

I have a few things I'd like to accomplish with the reciever they include: running a set of speakers outside for the hot tub, would like to run 7.1 at some point when I get better fronts and run the modulus as all the rear speakers, the TV is a 62" Toshiba Cinema series so its 1080p with HDMI the upconversion features i am reading about sound good but I can't make all that much sense of it all.

Wow run on sentance there, I'm a noob here so thanks for any advice/personal experience or informative links you can provide me. For the future I work in the heating and cooling industry and hope to be able to add some knowledge to the site in that aspect.

Thanks in advance,
Malcolm

The HK(Harman Kardon) AVR445 is a great product, it does up-conversion, has HDMI switching. I have sold a few of these and haven't had a single unsatisfied customer. HK recivers (in my opinion) are great Denon recivers are OK, its not untill you get in to their high end stuff i find that they start getting noticiably better. Where as with HK i find all of their products are actually top notch. Hope this helps.

Personally I would choose a Denon AVR-2807. This receiver is about as future proof as you can get within your budget as it is capable of new lossless audio formats with full 7.1 via LPCM from HD Players (via HDMI).

Initially you can build a 5.1 surround system, and use the surround back channels as the Zone 2 output to drive your outdoor speakers. However, when you eventually purchase full 7.1 speakers be aware that you will need to purchase a separate 2-channel poweramp to drive your outdoor speakers via Zone 2.

The perfect receiver that will do all this is the soon to be released Sherwood Newcastle R872

Minus the upconversion, the rest of the features you want are on the already available on the SN R871

Checkout the Axiom loudspeaker website for further info

Went for that after all with the AVR987 which is tha same receiver, different remote, and even though it isn't yet setup, all my reading got me there, seems as future proof as any others, except maybe no sacd through hdmi ( need hdmi1.2 for that, but you still can do it with the 5.1 analog, so a great purchase imo. Will let you know as soon as tested
