: What are you watching on Blu-ray? (and discussion of said titles)
hc666 2009-01-01, 08:41 PM Mamma Mia - Pure agony! This movie really needed more hot chicks that could actually sing. This is the worst musical I have ever seen/heard. Not that they are bad singers... but they are not great at all! And Peirce Bronson... don't even get me started!
PQ and AQ are very good but it doesn't help the movie at all.
Bad Santa - Greatest Xmas movie ever made. Billy Bob should have won an oscar! Terrific flick!!!
PQ was pretty bad I thought for a BD though and AQ was ok I guess.
MikeH 2009-01-01, 11:04 PM Just finished watching this amazing series. Had this on DVD but it is an easy upgrade to blu.
Top tier DTS-MA, fantastic picture with the correct respect paid to the intent and the greatest production based show to ever be on television.
Tezster 2009-01-02, 12:19 AM So far I've gone through the first 7 episodes. The live action shots look decent, but all the CGI shots look pretty bad. It's almost as if they copied and pasted the frames from the DVD version.
I'm a huge fan of the series, so any improvement PQ-wise for me makes it worth the upgrade, but for the casual fan who already owns the DVD set, the BD version isn't a big enough difference to make it a must have, unless you can pick it up for cheap.
The AQ is a marked improvement, if only because the DVD version only came with a DD 2.0 track. Judged on its own, DTS-MA track itself isn't that lively, and the surround speakers aren't that active.
rfielder 2009-01-02, 07:18 AM For a movie with only 27% at Rottentomatoes, we really enjoyed this one!
Takes a huge amount of suspense of disbelief, but what doesn't these days? Good, albeit unlikely, action, and good suspense as you wonder who is on the phone.
The only unbelievable part is the ending - SPOILER ALERT! - after discharging a firearm, he should not have survived the return fire.
Petee_C 2009-01-02, 12:32 PM There's a BluRay player under the tree....
Batman Begins - seen it on DVD
The Last Samurai - seen it on DVD
WAR - Jet Li, Jason Statham - not seen yet
Transporter 2 - just watched the 1st transporter last week.
BB - great movie, looked great on the projector, despite the darkly lit scenes
TLS - great movie, the Samurai village scenes looked great, although a bit dark. I guess such is life at the turn of the century when u don't have electricity. I forgive them for this.
WAR - didn't watch much of it... .ran out of time with all the holiday family travel
Transporter 2 - fun movie, decent PQ, watched it with my old Sony 5.1 rec'r. The 1st transporter was better.
3 'free' movies
Devil Wears Prada - seen it on DVD
I, Robot - seen it on DVD
Kingdom of Heaven - seen it on DVD already
DWP - haven't seen it yet... will wait til wife has time (although we did enjoy it on dvd)
I,Robot - enjoyed the PQ and AQ of this film, watched this early without the benefit of the loseless audio. Got about 2/3'rds of the way through. will definitely finish it this week.
KoH - don't yet have a 3 hr spot where I want to devote to this flick
Plus 3 movies from my zip trial (will likely downgrade my membership)
Harold and Kumar go to White castle
Band of Brothers - disc 1
Meet the Robinsons....
Can't wait.... Don't know what will be my 1st Blu Ray on the 120" screen.....
zip..... Meet the robinsons came early, but the other 2 movies were delayed due to the Xmas rush. They took about 10-14days to get to the postoffice.
MTR - nice movie, kids watched a bit of it, but 'got scared', finished it by myself. PQ fantastic
Harold and Kumar - got 30 mins into it, and shut it off... was watching it with my wife, and she didn't appreciate the humour.... likely going to send it back unfinished.
BoB - maybe this weekend.

We enjoyed watching Eagle Eye as well. Nice 2 hr BD experience.
(SPOILER ALERT!) I thought the only unbelievable part was the supercomputer...which unfortunately happened to be the entire plot...

If you go though some of the extras, you will hear them talking about the origins of the idea for the movie. Speilberg (?) had suggested the idea 10 years ago, but at that time it would hav been pure science fiction. Today, it is only a bit of a stretch, both for the AI and for the role that cell phones play.
Had this been set 5 to 10 years in the future, the role of the supercomputer would have been quite believable. On the other hand, unless you are following the details for AI research, you may not be aware how far they have come......

I can't follow the military role in AI research, but what is publicly known could never been the inspiration to what is shown in the movie.
For good 10 years people talk about voice recognition (Bill Gates' favorite) and its state right now is best described as miserable.
What is AI (as shown in the movie) without 100% reliable voice recognition?
And I'm now even talking about what no AI ever was able to demonstrate - initiative.
MikeH 2009-01-04, 12:21 AM Despite its flaws I enjoyed Hellboy 2. PQ was good and this was easily the most aggressive DTS-MA track I have heard.

Voice recognition is only tied to AI in the movies. That association is a Hollywood invention.
And I'm now even talking about what no AI ever was able to demonstrate - initiative.
There has been one instance of an AI passing the Turing test. I don't know if it was repeatable, so it may not have been a true proof, but it was significant that it came that close.
This is very far off topic. If we are to continue, I suggest moving this to a seperate discussion.
Tezster 2009-01-04, 01:09 PM Excellent PQ and AQ for both movies - I love fantastic transfers like these! :D
Sharp, vivid colours, and a very loud, aggressive, surround mix, which was surprising in a way, considering there were none of your typical room-shaking elements i.e. no big explosions, car chases/collisions, and minimal gun play in the action sequences.
lionmonty 2009-01-04, 01:16 PM just a heads up, went to hmv picked up hostage and jason vs freddy $20each.
Hazmat 2009-01-05, 10:48 AM Watched Band Of Brothers in Blu. It has a nice PQ and the sound was great. Overall an enjoyable experience in my books.
rfielder 2009-01-05, 10:54 AM PQ was good. This type of movies does not benifit hugely from hidef IMHO, but it certainly adds to the enjoyment. Low light scenes were very good, and you could tell that production values were good.
However, the most telling comment about the movie was from my girlfriend, who was an X Files fan. About 1/3 of the way through it, she said "this is about a serial killer. This isn't an XFiles movie".
Even the psycic link in the movie was very weak as a continuation of the X Files universe.
That about sums it up. As a murder mystery, it would have been good. As an X-Files movie, it really missed the mark.

Yup as mentioned earlier we enjoyed the entire flick. But we got the feel that the plot's taken a few pages off the Terminator & Bourne film series...
The supercomputer plot was no more believeable than Sandra Bullock's "The Net", and doesn't the sphere shape remind you of the Cerebro in X-Men? I mean, you don't see the Cray XT series looking that sexy in real life... :)
Either way it's not a big deal. My distaste for Hollywood's portrait of computers go as far back as Jurassic Park where the cute little girl plays with this crude flight-simulator looking thing and claims "It's a UNIX system"...

I really enjoyed Eagle Eye. Movies are supposed to fantasy. Unbelievable is good!!
Great Fun!!

It was SunOS IIRC ;)
actionshots 2009-01-07, 12:21 AM We watched DK and then i flicked on Dr. No. I got the two James Bond sets for $30 ea at XMas and I'm working my way through them.
My 17 yr old and his friends thought Dr. No was so old it was hilarious, until Ursala Andress appeared in a wet shirt- that got their attention!
Nels Stewart 2009-01-08, 12:52 AM The Wackness - It's the summer of '94, and Lucas Shapiro is rolling his ice cream cart around Manhattan earning money for college selling pot and looking for love. He thinks he may have found it when the girl of his dreams, Stephanie, invites him to her stepfather's summer cottage on Fire Island. Only problem is, Stephanie is the step-daughter of his shrink, who also happens to be one of his best customers.
A bittersweet coming-of-age movie crashes into an unconventional buddy flick and the result has some charm, a few laughs and some top-notch acting, especially by Josh Peck as Lucas, and Ben Kingsley as the shrink in the midst of a crisis of his own.
The PQ on this Blu-Ray is a mixed bag; the outdoor daylight scenes look very nice, but the interiors are often soft and muddy. The TrueHD audio really comes alive with the hiphop soundtrack.
Eluder 2009-01-09, 11:38 PM Watched Hellboy 2 this evening on my new TV, man did it look awesome. I actually liked turning on AMP on my TV to give the movie that 3D look. The quality of the PQ was really impressive, the details and colours I thought was great. Can't comment on audio since I simply watched the movie using the TV's speakers. In terms of the movie, I found the first one to be far better, but I kinda wanted to own both.
