: What are you watching on Blu-ray? (and discussion of said titles)
Cyclism 2008-09-29, 09:46 AM I won't discuss the movies because they've been discussed to death already.
I've owner probably every iteration of them and in every configuration and in every medium that they were presented: from VHS to Laserdisc, to the very disappointing 2001 DVD release, from The Compleat Saga to The Godfather Epic, so I can't count how many times I've dipped my beak into this well. But suffice to say that this restoration is beautiful.
For those thinking that the movies have been restored to what films of today look and sound like, you will be disappointed. But the restoration of these films to what's been presented in this Blu-Ray release is the best they've ever looked and sounded.
The new HD supplements are nice, if not a little fluffy, but all the other extras from previous releases are also included, albeit in SD.

Great PQ and AQ of course but didn't really like it that much the second time watching it, first at the theatre, second rental... i think i was caught up in the hype the first time. The story is pretty thin.
Glad I only rented it.
Tom.F.1 2008-10-05, 02:26 AM I enjoyed Ironman. Good workout for the subwoofer, it might be broken in buy now.
Loved the animations while he was loaded into the suit.
Tom.F.1 2008-10-05, 02:28 AM 88 was pretty good. mind bender.
Sound and pic was just fine.
Eluder 2008-10-05, 10:26 AM Watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall last night at a friend's place on a Samsung BD-P1500. Had quite a few stutters with the movie, and even some odd audio issues in a certain scene. Strange thing was you couldn't repeat the issue, you'd skip back a track etc, and it would play fine in the same spot.
In regards to the movie itself, I enjoyed it in the theatres when it came out, and I enjoyed it again on BD. Can't go wrong with Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell in HD. :) The PQ was nice, especially in Hawaii, but not the type of movie to showcase BD.
Rooster14 2008-10-05, 12:32 PM Great PQ and AQ! The story is pretty decent for a superhero film, Downey is an engaging character. Liked Jeff Bridges performance as well. The final battle is very Transformers like.
Rooster14 2008-10-05, 12:34 PM  I want that 90 minutes of my life back.
Gord Lacey 2008-10-05, 06:52 PM I didn't see this in theatres, but the BD is incredibly washed out. The black levels in most of the scenes are just horrible, and reminds me of the last time I had one of the in-seat TV screens on a flight and someone had turned the brightness way up.
Will anyone admit to seeing this in the theatre, and if so, was most of the movie washed out? This is the worst-looking BD I've ever seen.
Gord
flickerbat 2008-10-06, 03:28 AM Maybe they figured all that colour was getting in the way of the funny...oh...right...
Rooster14 2008-10-08, 12:37 PM Typical M. Knight fair, there is a story that can't be completely told or shown. An ending that should intrigue but you see coming from a mile away. Not a complete waste, Walberg's performance is decent.
PQ is very dissapointing for BD, no depth, some scenes are actually blurry. Colours are ok but this looked like a DVD in most scenes.
AQ is quite good, not a loud action movie good, this is a more of a slow paced drama. But the soundfield felt very open with good dynamics when something did happen.
Overall I'd rate it below average, but not thumbs down.
Eluder 2008-10-08, 01:06 PM Not thumbs down? OMG, I was dragged to see this movie in the theatres with my sisters and their friends and it was even worse than I was expecting. To me the happening was one of the most idiotic concepts for a movie that I have seen in a long time. Terrible terrible movie!
Rooster14 2008-10-08, 02:55 PM My opinion was probably scewed since this was the first movie I watched after "what happens in vegas". Just staring at a BD case was more enjoyable...
Tom.F.1 2008-10-09, 12:07 PM Did the Happening Play OK?
On the Blu-Ray fourm, they're complaining about the happening doing nothing but black screen?
Or, judging buy the reviews, would the black screen be a step up?
I usually like those types of movies, so i'm going to rent it tonight
Rooster14 2008-10-09, 05:14 PM The Happening played fine on my PS3, but yes there would be almost as much happening with a black screen...;)
Rooster14 2008-10-10, 12:10 PM I won't comment on the movie itself, either you liked it or not. I enjoyed the first one, but MIB II was a turd.
PQ is very good for a slightly older film, good depth, colours are very bold ( especially blacks of course).
AQ was good, a little tinny or hollow in parts, but decent surround use and good dynamics and lfe.
Nels Stewart 2008-10-11, 01:29 AM The Happening - Like looking at a car accident at the side of the road, I just couldn't resist the temptation of The Happening, despite all the universally bad reviews. I should have just kept on driving past the Blockbuster. Despite a somewhat intriguing premise, The Happening just never gets rolling. Most of the "surprises" are telegraphed before they happen, the ending is completely anticlimactic, and the soundtrack is one of the worst I've endured.
PQ and AQ were both unremarkable.
flickerbat 2008-10-11, 06:26 AM Eastern Promises - for a film that subdued in look, the transfer is a wonder. Realistic colour and shadows, and my first time seeing the film in a year - what a home run this thing is - even if you know the score.
hc666 2008-10-12, 08:44 PM The Happening
I actually liked this movie. Reminds me of something that should be on the Drive In channel though so can understand why people don't like it lol
Feels alot like a 50s sci-fi/horror movie to me... PQ and AQ were decent.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Not bad, few good lines I will remember for awhile... i thought the PQ detail was a little weak. AQ and colors were good.
james99 2008-10-12, 08:49 PM Perhaps the most overrated comedy I have seen in some time.
Better than average story but only slightly.
PQ is not very good.
hc666 2008-10-13, 03:17 PM 28 Days Later
Great movie but alas, the worst PQ of any existing Blu Ray.
Audio kicks some butt though and since its such a great film, it makes up for the awful PQ.
Still recommended!
