I not sure if I should use HDMI or Component to hook up my new Playstation 3 to my TV (60" SXRD).

If I connect using HDMI directly to my TV and later add a receiver into the mix, can I simly use an optical cable from the PS3 to the receiver (for audio) and keep the PS3 directly connected to the TV via HDMI??

I also have a standard HDMI DVD player that will also be hooked into the receiver.

The receiver I anticipate buying (HK AVR 245) has room for 2 HDMI in's and 1 HDMI out...

Help!

I have a sony 40" LCD XBR with 1080i. Problem that I am encountering is that I have only one HDMI input and that is being used for my up-converting DVD player. I was wondering if I connect my PS3 with Component will I lose any quality when watching Blu-ray movies? Component can handle 1080i? I know that I need to use HDMI for blu-ray if I want 1080p, but since my TV can only handle 1080i I am not to worried about that.

Component can handle 1080i (and 1080p as well as some on this forum have gotten the 360 to run 1080p, 1080i games upconverted to 1080p, on there sets via component http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?p=463871#post463871). That's what I am running with my X-Box 360 as my tv only does 1080i

Thanks!

One more question. I have noticed the component cables for PS3 are sold out everywhere, will the PS2 component cables work?

ps2 compenent cables will work. Will save you about 40 bux in total over those overpriced onces you're likely to find beside the ps3 displays at the futureshop or best buy.

Go HDMI if you can. Best price and place is monoprice.

I picked up my PS3 at Best Buy today and the sales guy tried to con me into the "official" Sony PS3 cables, telling me that its the "new" HDMI standard.

FWIW I hooked up my PS3 with my $15.00 HDMI from monoprice and my $25.00 optical cable from The Source.

Picture is unreal and 5.1 sound is amazing.

IMO, since you can use ANY hdmi cable on your ps3, you might as well. you can pick them up online or in certain stores usually under 20 bucks now... if you're going to go with the component cables you have to buy proprietary cables that you can't use elsewhere down the road.

if you come to a point where you have more hdmi devices than inputs, then decide which device to switch over to component.

i switched my bell 9200 from hdmi to component and i didn't notice any difference whatsoever.

Don't forget you can always pick up a HDMI switcher that allows for a bunch of inputs and one output which can hook into your TV.

I started out with my PS3 hooked up through component, but I have since switched to HDMI. Picture quality (sharpness) appears to be the same, but colours are even better with HDMI.

Plus, I picked up a $23 HDMI cable from BCOM computers in Edmonton, which beats $75 for a decent set of component cables (price is a factor on component cables since they're analog).

I use the digital optical output for sound as my TV has no sound going through it.

Picture quality and sound are AWESOME.

I use HDMI and although most content looked great a couple of my movies have visible lines. Not sure if it would be considered the screen door effect. I am reletively new to the HD world so I'm sure if I can tell the difference but I can say that MI3 looks better on DVD than Blu-Ray on my TV atm.

Don't have any component cables to test but I suspect it may either be a config problem with the set possibly not being properly calibrated but some scenes in Mi3 looked really bad. Most noticable were scenes with greys. I am going to play with it tonight and see what I can figure out. Not even so sure it was as much a grid as just poor color saturation with horizontal lines going through those sections of color.

Using HP DLP set which accepts a 1080P signal over HDMI.

Hello,
I have my PS3 set up with an HDMI cable and I want to change over to component. The problem is i'm not sure how to do this since when I try to change it in the settings I get a black screen.

What do I do?

Thanks

you can try holding down the power button on start up until it beeps a few times or maybe plug both cables in at the same time and then switch from hdmi to component

Yeah, thats how I changed mine from HDMI to Component. Had them plugged in at the same time and just switched inputs on my HDTV after switching through the PS3.

Just a tip that I haven't seen widely reported, if you are looking for component cables to hook up the ps3 to a hdtv you can buy the ones Sony made for the ps2. They work fine with the ps3. I got them at bestbuy today for $34.99 while the third party unofficial component cables for ps3 were $39.99. I don't have HDMI so I had to use component.

Yup, I'm using my old PS2 component cables and I can't tell the difference between those and HDMI. I've tested them both on Superman Returns.

The big difference between HDMI and Component will be for people with 1080p TVs as Component can't do 1080p, just 1080i. I switched my PS3 to HDMI and my digital cable box to component so I could enjoy 1080p.
