Maybe you'll get lucky and get one of my former consoles as a refurb...not so lightly used (except the one that died after 5 hours) but well maintained. Good luck!

He might get the last refurbished console I sent in. It gave me a total of 8 days of gaming before it gave the RROD.

In that case, I hope he has more luck with it than I did.

I was watching a movie (HD-DVD) one night this week, and it froze on me. I was sleepy, so I turned it off.

Next day, I was playing some guitar hero, and mid-song it froze. I still wanted to play, so I turned it off, and back on... BAM RRoD!

F#$%

After reading the previous posts, I'm not looking forward to the hassle I'll face with MS.

It seems to have gotten a lot better lately, only thing is, you will get a refurbished console back, which may not be any more rliable, plus some people have had DRM issues.

The "Xbox 101" section of Major Nelson's latest podcast (http://www.majornelson.com/) claimed that if you had your console repaired my Microsoft, the DRM issues can be fixed by simply re-downloading your purchased content (after logging into Live with the account that purchased the content) on the refurbished box. Both he an co-host "e" claim that this will download new license keys for the refurbished box, and allow access to your purchased content by any account on the Xbox, and even when not logged into Live.

I was surprised to hear this, as I've read that on a refurbished box you could only gain access to your purchased content by logging into Live.

So after 1 year of operation my repaired 360 is now dead with the red ring of death. This was a replacement unit that I got after sending my original xbox in for repair 1 year ago. So back it goes, and who knows what I'll get in return this time...

Unfortunately, I joined this club last week.
RROD last Tuesday.
Had the machine 9 months.
To their credit, MS was very helpful and initiated the process to return the unit and get it repaired/replaced very quickly with zero fuss.
How long does it take to receive the return box?

Here's a new one ... the network card in it doesnt work anymore. No matter what I do the status states "disconnected" in the diagnostic. Take my brother's 360 on the same connection and it works fine.

This one was a brand new replacement from last September.

This is my 3rd xbox to have a problem with :(

1st - One had the Hard Drive fail within the first month of purchase (futureshop replaced it)

2nd - RROD (futureshop replaced with the ESP, giving me a brand new 360 but losing the ESP)

3rd - Network card seems to be fried (MS sending me a coffin for return)

For this most recent episode of mine it took 2-3 weeks for them to ship me a coffin, then 2-3 days for them to ship me a refurb unit.

I got the coffin within 3 days to Nova Scotia. Hassle free when I called. Had it shipped to my office. Total time 7 business days.

That's good to hear.
Not too concerend with turn around time. Sooner obviously better than later, but with holidays and nice weather, we won't be playing it as much anyway.
Just want to be ready when The Who DLC is ready for Rock Band!
:)

UPDATE: My son just called and said Purolator dropped the box off.

Well I'm now onto 360 #4. 3rd one RROD last weekend so I went out and bought an Elite.

Coffin should be here today to ship dead one back for repair. Process to start the repair was very easy, now to see how long it all takes and what sort of unit I get back.

Placed my repair order on Monday and had the coffin today and back to MS the same day.

Purolator guy knew exactly what the box was and said "Xbox troubles?" Also said he had 5 more boxes on the truck. Accordingto him the turn around time was approx 5 days for the new unit to arrive.

After 18 months mine finally got RROD today.
Started the process and "coffin" is on the way.
Now this dude I talked to said either they fix old one or supply new unit.
He did not seem too "enlightened" on whole subject.
I'm mighty scared after reading the previous posts.
Should the hard drive be removed before sending?
(don't want to lose saved games)
Thanks.

Yes remove the HD unless they specifically ask you to send it which for a RROD they shouldn't.

Don't seng anything but the console itself and remove any custom faceplate if you have one. No cables, power supply, controllers, or anything else, just the console. Makes sure to remove any games on the drive as well.

They also do not fix your console, you will most likely get a refurb or possibly a new one if they have no refurbs in stock.

Thanks, allready took the hard drive off, but I forgot about my silver face plate!
Would hate to have a white one clashing with my other components!

I have to say, my repair/replacement process couldn't have gone smoother.
Called on Tuesday June 24th.
Received coffin Monday June 30th.
Returned to Purolator same day.
Received Xbox back Tuesday July 8th.
Two weeks start to finish.

Started claim July 4th.
Coffin received July 11th.
Shipped to Xbox via Purolator July 14th.
Xbox received Purolator shipment July18th.
Today CSR (I use the term very loosely) says it is in the process of being fixed and should be sent in a week or so. (after not being able to find it at first)
Is a "service request number" the same as the reference number they gave
me when I started this process July 4th?
I cannot check status on-line cause they say my number is no good.
CSR says the reference number is the number to use.
I don't think they know what is going on whatso-ever.
Anybody else get a run around?
I got bad vibes that this will be a 6 week process or worse.
Will phone again Friday and get another frustration shot.

You should have been sent an email with a Service Request ID in it and instructions on how to package it up and send it back. You can use that number or apparently the serial number of the box you sent in.
