There are no HDMI 1.3 receivers on the market, the first products are expected to be announced at CES in January, and will start getting released in 2007 Q1 and Q2. Expect to pay a heavy price premium for HDMI 1.3 until late 2007.

I have the same denon av unit.HDMI 1.3--I thought that this spec is just a cable spec.If it is not, maybe with Denon we can just download a firmware update??

If you look on the Denon site, you'll find that the latest receivers are backward compatible to 1.1 but not upgradeable. This comment might suffice:

"Al Griffin says: I learned that there's currently no labeling system in place to specify which version of HDMI a given piece of equipment contains. That means it's up to you, the consumer, to determine what's going on HDMI-wise by checking Web sites, reading reviews, and calling manufacturers. Also, there are no firmware updates available that let you upgrade an HDMI connection on your TV or other gear. Since you're currently shopping for a TV and are concerned about HDMI, you should be aware that the 1.3 specification was only just finalized in June. That means it's not likely to appear in any products until 2007 at the earliest."

Just got an official answer yesterday from Denon Canada support for my receiver which I interpret as: even if my receiver (AVR4306) is only v. 1.1 it will still work between 1080p source (PS3) and a future 1080p screen (HDMI 1.3) because the HDMI internal switching matrix is built for 1080p bandwidth. BUT the receiver still only upscales up to 1080i AND it will not be Deep Color compliant NOR will it decode internally True HD (anyway the PS3 does it internally)or DTS HD.
By the way he confirms that to upgrade from 1.1 to HDMI 1.3 would need also hardware modifications which are not planned.

Interesting. So I guess if I get a HD-DVD player that is HDMI 1.3 capable like the new Toshiba A2X I should run the HDMI cable straight to my 1080p SXRD tv to take advantage of the deep color feature?

ta-kid: your TV would need to be HDMI 1.3 compliant in order to take advantage of HDMI 1.3 features. For a great primer on HDMI read: http://www1.electronichouse.com/info/specials/hdmi_basics.html

Scroll down to "Let's say you have an HDTV with version 1.1. Let's also say you purchase a new Blu-ray DVD player that has HDMI 1.3 in it."

Yes I saw that and yes with special audio signals (HD)you need special processing chips but with Video I always thought it was basically a pass thru. The article makes no referance as to wether the deeper colours will pass through and onto the screen from 1.3 HDMI to a HDMI1.x.To me it does not make sense to have to reprocess a video pure digital signal that is being already sent along a HDMI cable with the extra colour depth .The colour is already established by the 1.3 device before it is sent, just like any device,VCR,cable box or a camcorder.Once it is on its way to a display device you would think it would be passed onto the screen.
They have been saying for years that a display device will only display what the sending device reads off or from the feed. You know the old saying "garbage in garbage out".Well now its Top grade picture in and only some quality out.
I accept the notion that you need to process the digital info from the source,EQ Disc or tape, but once that is done it should pass onto a display device.
Now its a different story if you throw in a amp to upscale to 1080i before the display device if the amp is not 1.3 compliant, because you are re processing the video signal.AM I WRONG.??

ta-kid: if you have a 24-bit set that is limited to displaying 16 million colours, how would you expect the set to be able to magically be capable of displaying deep colour (30-bit, 1 billion colours) via HDMI 1.3. Think about it. ;)

Here's a great article you may want to read: http://www1.electronichouse.com/info/specials/hdmi_basics.html

No current or expected format uses deep color...........1.3 is primarily an audio concern for me including auto av sync.....and a connector that is not suppossed to fall out.

hdmi 1.3 is just for the ablitity to display resolutions higher than 1920x1080p and for high definition audio. To sum it up HDMI 1.0 = 5.0GB/sec HDMI 1.3 = 10.2 GB/sec

Deep Color is not supported by Blu-ray and HD-DVD, since both are limited to 8 bits. It will probably be in the next format in 3 to 5 years...

Totally useless until 3 to 5 years for films.

All the HD-DVD titles are encoded in "Advanced Content", so decoding of ALL the audio formats is mandatory to be in the player. All Blu-ray titles will soon be in Advanced Content also, so all the decoding will be done in the players.

When a disk (HD-DVD or Blu-ray) is encoded with Advanced Content, and even if you are NOT using any of the Advanced Content, the player will have to do the decoding internally, and WON'T be allowed to send any non-decoded data to any HDMI 1.3 devices...

So everyone are waiting for HDMI 1.3 for absolutely NO REASON. HDMI 1.3 is useless. Manufacturers spins and hype to sell new equipment. HDMI 1.1 is fully able to pass 7 channels of LPCM of non-compressed audio on Blu-ray titles already!

HDMI 1.3 is the best example of FUD and misinformation by the manufacturers in full glory. Really sad...

From the Toshiba web site:

Both the HD-A20 and the high end HD-XA2 HD DVD player are designed to output 1920 x 1080p, the highest HD signal currently available, via HDMI. As the premium HD DVD player, the HD-XA2 also incorporates support for Deep Color output through HDMI, and a 297MHz / 12 bit Video DAC with high-quality, 4x oversampling for increased bandwidth for true playback of an HD picture to a video source.

Is that a proven fact or your opinion?
I guess Toshiba must be lying about Deep Color then.

Cinema Series® REGZA 1080p Full HD - LX177 Series
In addition to the many enhancements made throughout the new REGZA line, Toshiba is proud to offer four new Cinema Series REGZA 1080p Full HD models in 42″, 46″, and new 52″ and 57″ diagonally measured screen sizes - 57″ is the largest flat panel TV Toshiba has offered yet. In addition to the features and benefits of all the new REGZA models mentioned above, 2007 Cinema Series REGZA models also feature new ClearFrame 120 Hz anti-blur technology. This advanced technology doubles the frame rate from 60 frames per second to 120 frames per second using Motion Vector Frame Interpolation, virtually eliminating motion blur without adding flicker or reducing image brightness. This makes Cinema Series REGZA the perfect choice for fast action movies and sports. The Cinema Series REGZA HDMI connections also include Deep Color and XVycc technology for further enhanced color space.

Cinema Series REGZA 1080p Full HD
42LX177 (June/July 2007)
46LX177 (June/July 2007)
52LX177 (June/July 2007)
57LX177 (June/July 2007)

On top of this, the Toshiba HD-XA2 HD DVD player incorporates support for Deep Color output through HDMI, and a 297MHz / 12 bit Video DAC.

HDMI 1.3 is certainly not FUD. I can't wait to see more Deep Color support across the market. 12-bit video allows for 16 times more color space than current 8-bit sets.
