As for the Montreal channels, I tried to aim my antenna dead on (0º to 10º) north towards Montreal and away from Mt Orford, and I get no picture what so ever on CBC ch6. At first, I would have made out some imagine when at 14º. Also, my ch7 & ch11 and slightly less good, but still very good. Yet, no digital channels from Canada.

If you can't get channel 6, you probably have terrain blocking you from Montreal.

Just to be sure it's not an antenna issue, do you get CFTM (TVA) on channel 10? If you don't then there's probably no way you can get any Montreal stations, whether they're from Mount Royal or not.

You'll have to make do with CTV analog from Cornwall and Global from Sherbrooke for Canadian English stations. Probably nothing in digital till 2011.

What you have built is a UHF antenna. TVA and SRC in Trois Riveiers are on VHF-High (8 and 13).
If you're not getting the local analog UHF stations, it's because your TV is in Cable or CATV mode. The numbering for cable channels 14 and above is nt the same as UHF -- you need to go itp the TV's menu and look for an 'antenna' or 'over the air' setting.
When you've set it up this way, you'll find TQS on 16, CBC on 28, and TeleQuebec on 45.

There won't be probably won't be any digital in Trois Rivieres before 2011 when SRC flash cuts to digital on 13.

You may have a chance on Montreal digital stations in 2009 or 2010 if SRC and CBC move to the Mount Royal tower.

If you want better reception on 8 and 13, you'll need to get or make some VHF rabbit ears.

Thanks for response. tvlurker, you are right. I add VHF rabbit ears, the signals of TVA and SRC are better. But TQS, TeleQuebec CBC are still snowy. There is no any chance to pick up any digital signal in Trois-Rivieres? Too bad. If it is possible to build satellite to get more digital signals or using cable?
Could you give me some adv on purchase satellite?

You should be able to get digital cable from your local cable company (is it videotron?), as well as from Star Choice or Bell TV. Check the cable and satellite TV forums here for more details -- I'm an OTA guy, and as for cable, I only know about Rogers.

But TQS, TeleQuebec CBC are still snowy.

Check the contruction of your antenna. Unless you're blocked from the transmitter towers, or you're far away from them, you should get better than a snowy picture. Also, check out the SGBH and DBGH UHF antenna designs in the Antenna Research and Development forums.

I checked TVFool.com TV Signal locator for the centre of Trois Rivieres, and it looks like you might get CBVT (SRC) 11.1 on physical channel 12. You'll need better than rabbit ears to null out channel 12 analog from Montreal, though. because it comes it with just 5 dB less power. You need to increase that margin at least to 15 dB, which is possible with a VHF yagi antenna.

(If you do look at TVFool, ignore all the Canadian digital stations it lists except for CBMT-DT, CBVT-DT, and CBVT-DT. The other ones are either wrong, or not yet on the air (and when they do come on the air, it may not be with as much power as TVFool thinks...)

Télé-Québec 27 ( 17.1 ) was zero At midnight here in Beloeil with my 4221 pointed the Mont-Royal.

Even if the Antenna is on the Big O, I should get because the 4221 is very wide.

I will have to check into that.

I am surprised you can't catch it. You have to enter 27.1, not 17.1 by the way (but I suppose you know that).;)

I know that and I rescanned my Samsung TV and zéro just snow.

I will send an email to Tele-Québec just for fun to see what they will say.

My first post, and I'd like to thank all the regulars for the great info. It's been a big help during the transition. I'm very happy with my reception so far but there are a few quirks. WCAX and WPTZ are perfect . What a picture. I have a converter box (ZINWELL ZAT)and a traditional rooftop antenna like the one in the title banner. I get both at almost 100 percent signal quality and signal strenth but I don't get any other US stations.
Before Digital i received wcax and wptz well but not perfect
wetk wvny and wcfe marginally and a i got a very snowy wfff
During the transition I was able to get all of the above stations on Digital.. wfff was the weakest and wvny a little better,,but wetk and wcfe were quite strong .
But since the analog cut off I can't pull in anything else besides WPTZ and WCAX ,does anyone have any ideas? Do i just need a better antenna? Thanks for any help you can provide .

Zinwell

with your outdoor antenna, if you are presently getting WCAX and WPTZ, you shoud also get WFFF and VPT, they are broadcasting on the same mountain. WFFF is the weakest. Maybe you need a preamp

you should also get the PBS on Mt Lyon

and the local ones? (Radio Canada French and English on UHF 19 and 20, Tele-Quebec on UHF 27 and TQS on 42)

thx hungt1999 . I do get the local montreal stations perfectly as well. And i thought i should get wfff and vpt , since they were on the same spot. The antenna direction should be identical for all of them right? I do use a small ge post amp i guess you would call it,10db inside the house.. were u suggesting the kind you mount at the antenna? is there anyone in the gpk st hubert longueuil area getting wfff at the moment ota?if so what sort of antenna are you using ?

Hello ZINWELL and welcome. I also lives in Greenfield Park (OLD) near the hospital.

I don't have a problem with WFFF. I<m waiting for spring to arrive so i can change my antennas. If you need any help don't hesitate.

zinwell,

I get all locals and US stations except for WVNY-DT which gives me only at 45-50%

I have built several antennas

for UHF: 4 bay bowties, 8 bay bowties and DBGH. I am currently using the 4-bay bowties as the other versions gives me no particular improvement, plus they are bulkier.

for VHF: I built a homemade Yagi similar to the 10y13s. I also bought the real 10y13s. I tested both individually and gives me comparable results. I am in the process of combining them together.

I have the cm7777 preamp as well as the GE amp from addison at $10. Currently, I am using two GE preamp in series together. They perform better than my cm7777 for my location in Ste-Rose Laval.

here is the GE amp and yes, the preamp should go as close as possible to the antenna. The power injector can go anywhere after that.

by the way, my antennas are in my attic. I don't have a tower and I am not intending to erect one either.

hungt1999 , it sounds like you've become a bit of an antenna expert. i was thinking of going for a straight uhf antenna , but i will probably wait for spring to change anything like yipikyer said. also i would think we would have a better idea by then what works best for our lcoations. Yipikyer i live in old gpk too, near empire and james davis.. what sort of antenna and amp if any are you using?

ZINWELL: I'm on Fairfield near the hospital

I have one old all-wave vhf-uhf on a 40 feet tower, i have a 4228 and a 10y13 in a sweet spot!!!
I have a 7777 pluged-in also. WFFF is coming at 79%, and WETK at 100%
If you want to talk in more details, you can PM me

Another fellow GPk near Centennial here.
Yipikyer, are you able to get ABC 22-1 with your set-up ?
If yes, I will risk going up my tower to re-connect my old VHF/UHF antenna
comme summer.
I have added a pre-amp 7777 to the antenna 4228 but still no ABC.
The antenna is optimized for US channels and I am unable to get 17-1.

maybe you already know this but in case do don't, inside the cm7777 box, there is a switch to toggle VHF and UHF separate or combined input, have you set it correctly?

strange that you don't get 17.1 as their signal is pretty strong, I receive it at 100% from Laval

Hello to you FGN303
Yes, i do get 13 without much problem. I found a sweet spot in between houses and it comes in. On the top of my tower:zip - nothing!!! You do have to use the seperate vhf input of the 7777 and make sure the switch is not set at combined.
