Well, it would appear that there is even less of a chance of seeing some EPL games in HD on Sportsnet as they have lost the rights to the games to the Score (article below). Is there a Score HD channel - there isn't here in Shaw land....

"The Score outbids Rogers Sportsnet for EPL on Saturdays in Canada

December 1, 2006

The Score has outbid Rogers Sportsnet for the sublicence from FOX Sports International (FSI) to broadcast live in Canada at least 2 English Premier League (EPL) matches each Saturday during the 2007-2008 season.

A source indicates that Rogers Sportsnet might discontinue its SoccerCentral studio show, featuring both EPL and Canadian soccer news and analysis, as early as December 30, as Rogers Sportsnet's contract with the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) will expire on December 31."

Wow. First sportsnet loose's out to GolTV and now The Score outbids them? Ouch!

This means I will watch even less soccer from Europe. I hate the Score given the constant scores at the bottom. It is just too busy for me.

Do they do that with their Raptors games? I understood that they don't (but I never watch) - now that they have the full license maybe they are not forced to run the ticker

I had assumed that they always do the ticker so I never watch that channel. I avoid many other channels, if possible, for the same reason.

Thescore keeps their ticker on for everything.

Like today, they had college basketball from ESPN U. First couple minutes they leave the ESPN ticker on, so the screen is double tickered, then they did some weird zoom in effect that removed the ESPN ticker, but cut off some of the court coverage. They basically do the same with their TNT-HD coverage of the NBA.

And seriously, how does this channel outbid Rogers Sportsnet?

I guess this means more Poker and Blackjack on SN. :/

Great....not looking forward to this...when is the changeover? The initial report which I attached in my first post seemed to suggest that the change to the Score would take place on January 1, 2007 (the reference to ceasing soccercentral after Dec 31) rather than the beginning of the 2007/2008 EPL season.

All televised EPL matches this season have been shown in the UK in HD. When I asked Sportsnet why they weren't showing them in HD too, the reply I got was that they hadn't licensed them in HD.

Since the Sportsnet broadcasts often have the FSC logo, I think there is likely the technical issue of Sportsnet's supplier not being equipped for HD.

No answer from The Score when I asked them if they will be showing EPL in HD next year.

Similarly, no reply from TSN when I asked them why they weren't showing Champions League games in HD when they were in HD in Europe.

It's a shame they don't air them in HD. I often flick over to Sportsnet HD on a Saturday morning to check out the game ... but invariably the poor picture quality (at least compared to what we got during the World Cup), doesn't tempt me to stay.

There is 31 MLS regular season games in HD on HDNet for the 2007 season, but we will have to see if these games are going to be broadcasted in Canada or blacked-out like the NHL games.

Looks like they are not blacking them out in Canada.

Your better off without it. Everything is stretched - and if they've ever aired any real HD, I've not seen it.

I noticed my On-Screen Guide shows both CBC and HDNet showing the Toronto Kansas City Soccer game at 9:30 AM PDT Sat. CBC web site indicates it is not showing it in HD. Also Zap2It does not show the game on HDNet at all but the HDNet Canada schedule says it is carrying the game at 9:30 AM PDT. I assume that if it is carried on HDNET it should be in HD but will have to wait and see.

As I would like to see the game in HDTV to see the new Toronto Stadium, I'll have to record both CBC HD Toronto and HDNet. Based on their record so far, I don`t expect that good of a game but at least it will be a Canadian team.
