: SA8300HD: Broadcast mode + HD channel problem
Wayne 2006-11-26, 01:46 PM I finally got around to replacing my SA3250HD with a SA8300HD. I disconnected the cables form my 3250HD, connected them up to the 8300HD and called Rogers to authorize. Everything looked good at first but then I noticed two problems:
1. On Demand channels to not work - I get the Settop in broadcast mode error.
2. It says I am not authorized to receive the "premium" HD channels such as TSN, Discovery, etc.
So I tried disconnecting the power cable from the STB and then reconnect it after a while. No change!
I called Rogers and they said that the two channels are related so they are sending a tech on Friday - but until then now HD TSN which is a pain!
I have now unplugged the unit numerous times and also tried changing RF cords. There is no splitter between the cable outlet and the box and I had new cable run to the house when I moved in 3 months ago. My levels (according to page 5 on the STB) are: FDC -8dBmV S/N of 29, Current QAM -2dBmV.
Why would I have such problems if the SA3250HD worked fine, including On Demand channels. Could something be wrong with the box?
Anyone have any idea what the problem can be or how to fix it?

Thats funny. I'm having the exact same problem, except that I've connected both box's via a splitter to give me 3 tuners. I thought that maybe it was the splitter but probably not due to the fact that it was there before for my VCR.
I get everything I subscribe to on the 8300HD except HD TSN & the HD W stations. I still get those on my 3250HD. (thank god).
Do you have more than 1 PVR or more than 2 HD box's?
Rogers claim that they opened a problem ticket for me (2 days ago) after I complained.
Wayne 2006-11-26, 02:32 PM Do you have more than 1 PVR or more than 2 HD box's?Only 1 PVR but two other SA3250HDs(only one connected right now) and two SD digital boxes. So I currently have four connected boxes but I may connect up the fifth shortly.
Let me know if you figure anything out and I'll let you know if I resolve it as well.
I may try a splitter and hook up the 3250HD as well but my TV only has two component inputs so then I will have to run it through my receiver and use that to give me an additional input but I don't know if it is worth the hassle.
Broadcast mode is an indication of no return signal to their head end. You say you have nothing upstream of the 8300HD, so check the RF-Coax, or replace it with another, and if you do have ANYTHING upstream, remove it. Any splitters should be rated 5-1000 MHz.

Note - I did try replacing the RF cable to no avail.
Wayne 2006-11-26, 05:05 PM Well I switched the video, power and RF cables back to the SA3250HD and everything was fine with it - I received all HD channels and On Demand worked. This makes me think it is some sort of problem with my box.
castaban 2006-11-27, 01:14 PM I had a similar problem when I recently got my 8300HD. CSR told me that specialty channels are attached to each STB and if I need to see them in 2 STB's, I need to pay twice (I don't know whether it is true). So I told them everything I had on my 3250 should be transferred to 8300HD (I was gonna return 3250) and then everything worked. I bet it is a setup issue at the Rogers side.
You MIGHT be confusing that fee with the multiple receiver fee. For my cable provider the fee is $3/month for the second receiver. However, Rogers may do it slightly different in that the basic channels are free but the specialty channels are not for additional receivers. Check it out.
Rogers have a $3/mo digital fee, no matter how many digital STBs. Also, what you subscribe to goes to all the STBs. Still, there could be an issue with authorization on the one box, although I've never heard of that issue - once the STBs are activated, all get the same channels.

I bet it is a setup issue at the Rogers side.I have had two SA3250HDs for over a year and I received all HD channels. It is just the new SA8300HD that doesn't seem to be able to tune into the "pay" HD channels such as TSN, Discovery, etc.

No actually.
I recently got a 2nd SA8300HD and it took three phone calls to get all the channels "authorized" on the second box.
Just call Rogers and tell them. They'll get you going.
Guess I should have said, once the STBs are activated they SHOULD all get the same channels.

Hmm, I currently have 4 box's connected as well (and a fifth leased SD one that I may return). I wonder if the nbr of box's has something to do with it although I temporarily removed one for a while and saw no change. My original 3250HD still receives ALL the channels I subscribe to as well. HD A&E is another one I just noticed that my 8300HD says is NOT authorized.
rodenti 2006-11-27, 09:17 PM I had the same problem when I switched from a regular digital box to a pvr. The CSR said that the dual tuner on the PVR requires a slightly better signal than the single tuner digital box, so I removed one splitter from the cable and it has been working fine since.
Boxster 2006-11-28, 03:45 PM I have had the same problem with Rogers. But in reverse, I had a 3250HD and a 8300HD authorized and working for awhile, when I decided to add the HD distance signals ($5) to the system, the 8300HD was authorized right away, but the 3250HD did not. So I called Rogers and keep escalating up the chain until they fixed it (2 hours). My personal experience with Rogers is to *NOT* hang up the phone, keep asking for the next level of support. They have some very knowledable technicians there to help solve all the problems, but you just have to know how to get to them.
AElvix 2006-12-01, 06:20 PM Well I finally got all of my extra channels authorized on both the 3250HD & 8300HD. Turns out that it was the splitter (thanks to the above 2 posts). I replaced the RadioShack splitter I was previously using with a Rogers one I happened to find (came with one of my STBs) and voila, both STBs are happy. I guess the 8300 is pickier than the 3250!
Wayne 2006-12-01, 10:14 PM I finally was able to resolve the problem that I was having. The Rogers tech came, checked the levels, and then looked at the status screen. He said that your not getting an IP address (which shows up on page 4) which is why you get the "Settop in broadcast mode". He suggested that I go and get a new box from Rogers or Best Buy.
I decided to try one more thing which fixed the problem. I moved the box to where my other HDTV is and replaced the SA3250HD with this 8300HD. It booted up and was able to get an IP address and was able to watch On Demand channels.
I then took this back down to the basement to my main HT setup and reconnected the box - this time it was able to get an IP address and I could watch On Demand.
I still couldn't get the HD premium channels so I called Rogers, they rezapped the box and after that I was able to get all channels.
Hi Folks,
I'm having a problem when I try to use ROD with the set saying it's in broadcast mode. This only happens when I put the PVR AHEAD of the 3250 in the cable signal. I want to do this so I can record both basic cable and digital cable. When I switch back to plugging the 3250 into the cable directly rod is fine.. Any ideas?
Thanks a bunch..
Your Pioneer PVR is blocking the return signal to Rogers which is required for ROD to work.
riaz, for a proper installation of your "PVR" (I assume it's a DVD recorder, but you must have mistyped the model number since a web search came up empty), see the following thread:
