: Shaw H high-Speed"Nitro Not reaching 25 MB download speed
infotree 2006-11-24, 09:47 PM I'm just wondering how many of you have reached the advertised download speed of 25 Mb with the new Shaw "High-Speed" Nitro.
I signed up today, and haven't hit over 13 Mb, using the Shaw Java Speed test.
I was told to unplug the modem for a few minutes, which I have done several times today, along with a reboot of my router & computers. Varies between 8 - 13 MB with the Shaw Speed Test.
But I can say my current speed is somewhat higher than my previous Shaw High-Speed Xtreme-I.
Maybe they're having some hiccups with the start-up of this service. I'll wait a couple days to see if it changes.
So currently thumbs down in my experience.

How many servers are capable of uploading at 25Mb? You can't expect to max out a connection speed that fast on a single source, it's main benefit is being able to DL from multiple sources simultaniously without any slowdown. Try running a few speedtests a the same time and see what happens.
rsambuca 2006-11-25, 03:17 PM Yeah, I agree with IanB on this one. I don't think you will get anywhere near 25MB from one server. Frankly, 8-13MB is very impressive, and I can't imagine needing more than that. I am still using the regular Shaw High-Speed service.:(
Try downloading from a variety of servers (MS, Redhat, etc.) and see what that does. If you don't get over 13MB, I'd call Shaw and demand a refund.

just a heads up buddy.
shaw's speed test is NOT setup to run effective with NITRO. it downloads the file before it even reaches its max.
i doubt there is a speed test out there that has a large enough file to download.
btw, you also have to setup your network connection tcp/ip settings to get the max downstream. some machines wont be able to handle the info comming down.

But like I said - try downloading larger files from 2-3 servers at the same time. See what the total speed maxes out at. If it isn't close to 25MB, call Shaw and ask for your money back.
infotree 2006-11-27, 12:01 PM I've had a couple of long conversations with Shaw Network tech support now, and we played with multiple settings and configurations, and it appears a service tech is needed and is coming out. We'll see what the service tech's laptop can achieve in speed at my location here in Edmonton.
Yes, I've been informed that the Java Shaw Speed test is not a suitable test for the Nitro system.
You will need to test with the alternate speed test at
http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/CustomerCare/InternetSupport/Residential/AlternateSpeedTest.htm
You are looking for an optimal download speed of this file of 3.125 Mb/sec, or even close to the example that is displayed on that page of 2.85 Mb/sec. The highest download speed I can achieve is 1.5 Mbps, which we both agree is not close to what I should expect.
Our testing began with the first thing in the equation is to direct connect to the shaw modem, bypassing your router. My two computers have Intel PRO/1000 CT Desktop Connections, and we have tried all of the link speed settings and auto negotiate best speed provides the highest download speed. 100 Mbsp half or full is slower, and 1000 Mbps full doesn't work at all.
I run Tweak Manager on these computers, and I have always optimized the Broadband cable modem settings (i.e. increase default time-to-live for IP packets, disable black hole router detection, enable automatic max transmisstion unit (MTU discovery, increase receive window size, increase max system receive window size, enable fast transmit, enable support for selective acknowledgements (SACK), enable support for TCP/IP window scaling, enable network adapter onboard processor)
Once the router is reconnected, your "best" speed will drop. I found with my D-Link DSL-4300 router, that the highest download speeds were with Gamefuel enabled, and setting the WAN port speed to Auto 10/100 Mbps instead of 100 Mbps.
I'll keep you informed as saga continues.

infotree 2006-11-30, 09:44 PM Cancelled Nitro, went back to Xtrem-I.
Shaw network rep checked everything out at house today.
We couldn't get even close to to advertised speed.
It peaked out at 2.00 Mb/sec.
But very pleased to Shaw support at office/and service reps

seand 2006-12-01, 09:45 AM I had the exact same problem in White Rock
My test speeds would not go above 13Mbs and the test download of the file peaked out moist of the time at 1.6 Mbs. They checked my area and there was no high usage that could explain the problem.
I also cancelled Nitro and went back to Xtreme-I
Uwish 2006-12-13, 09:25 PM There are so many variables that can effect your performance. Shaw claiming you get 25Mb doesn't mean you WILL get 25Mb, in fact I too am on Extreme-I and I get nowhere near the 10Mb as advertised and I never have. This just means the modem and your trunk are set up to handle that much broadband.
I typically get 1.5 to 3Mb on my Extreme-I from a great free speed test site..
http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
I have never seen 5 never mind this magical 10!!!
I find with shaw and other providers, for residential service, you need to divide by two, meaning they say 25 but in reality you will likely not see more than 12.5. So those who got 13, I wouldn't complain. This is a marketing game, they couldn't charge $100 month for a 13-15Mb service.
Info.. you said you peaked out at 2, what r u getting with Extreme - I ???
the problem with nitro is the fact that windows cant really handle it... you have to toally modify any/all network settings in windows.
other os dont have this problem.
HT gearhead 2006-12-24, 12:21 PM Using the freebie test at the above link I got 536.1 kbps and I have Shaw extreme. Is that good or bad for Shaw or should I just stick to their regular high speed package?
Uwish 2006-12-30, 01:16 PM that is horrible
My extreme-I I get around 2.5 M
Snark 2007-04-01, 01:52 PM I had some isues too. I upgraded to Nitro and all i got was 4-5 mb down and 8 up .I called tech support and was told that my aera was "possibaly still under construction" The person working at tech i was talking to said she had that problem herself in Whitehorn aera ,she switched me back to extreme and told me i will get a month free.I got my bill yesterday and noticed a 18 dollar credit.so now im back to extereme and get 8-9 mb down and .8 up.also for the last year im noticing server time outs and high pings in BF2142 servers.lastnight i played with a friend who had cheep dial up he lives in my aera i noticed i had a 65 ping and he had a 75 ping.Im not sure about Shaw anymore.i had cable internet the day it became avaliable in Calgary and notice a sharp decress in speed as it becomes more popular .
DJDiggler 2007-04-12, 03:57 AM I'm getting ripped also... only 756kb/s on the above test with shaw extreme. And thats at 2:00AM! Not exactly high traffic time (damn insomnia). I'll be giving them a call tomorrow.
EDIT: Well my bad.... I had QOS on my router turned on for my Vonage... aparently it really limits things because now I get 3.2MB/s on the above test. HT gearhead, I'd check for something like that before calling shaw .
This at speedtest.net
http://www.speedtest.net/result/112138297.png (http://www.speedtest.net)
Shaw Java test says 9mb down 976kb up (no bias there), yet I only get 1175Kbps when useing their alternate test.
Squirreldip 2007-04-12, 11:52 AM Personally, I don't understand why anyone would go to Nitro. Partly for the reasons stated above (not many sites will upload at 25) and also your own upload is still capped at 1Mbit.
Does anyone know of a cheap(er), even business, ISP that has higher uploads than 1Mbit? Calgary area...
Clutch 2007-04-21, 11:52 PM I have been using Extreme-1 for about a year now. I bit the bullet a few months ago and tried out Nitro. Had it about a week, and was not satisfied at all with the speed I was getting. So I just went back to Extreme. If Nitro was only $15 more then Extreme I would go back, but not at its current cost.
ray652 2007-05-08, 03:08 AM Been using Extreme for a few months....not bad...nothing that special...then today got Nitro........and not impressed.
Max I got after several tests on speedtest.net using a local server in Vancouver was 2.06MB or about 16,500Mb mid afternoon...see pics...but that was the very best I got with many tests during the evening.......which went down to 1.11 or around 8,800 close to midnight.
The pictures show average results from Extreme compared to today with Nitro...not impressed......
Was going to attach results but I see I cannot add attachments....sorry
Not as advertised!!!!
googler 2007-05-10, 10:32 PM (i use regular high-speed) I find that the bandwidthplace.com speedtest sucks, according to it I get 1.1 MEGABITS / second, but on speetest.net I get http://www.speedtest.net/result/124608645.png (http://www.speedtest.net)
infotree 2007-05-28, 12:11 PM I'm trying Nitro again, to see if anything has changed since the week it was introduced.
Presently with the Shaw Speed Test & SpeedEasy.net (Seattle) I peak out at ~13 Mb/sec. This is during the morning.
I'm going to try middle of night (off-hours) to see if reduced traffic volume makes a difference (the Shaw tech's suggestion)
Removing my D-Link Router from the equation, doesn't improve or decrease the download speed.
I'll keep you all informed with my findings.
