: My 6412 does not know it is a PVR anymore!

My PVR thinks it isn't.

No PVR menus, no listings button of recorded shows. All I have in the menus is an option to set VCR timers.

Anyone seeing the same?

Well, called in and they did a master reset from Shawland. Now I have nothing, not even channels. Nice. No recording, digital channles or HD until a Wednesday service call now.

"FYI - after many hours of tech support w/ Shaw, the unit is now working,
complete with the PVR menu options.

The issue was overheating. Please note that if a paper icon with a
dog-eared upper right hand corner appears in place of the PVR menu
option, then the terminal is in overheat mode. I thought you'd
appreciate knowing this, in case it comes up with your other customers."

One of my customers shared this information with me.

Definately not overheating on mine. I have checked the temperature on the unit several times, has never been an issue. It could be a hard drive failure, would make some sense on losing the PVR functions.

well, if you turn the unit off and then press the 'menu' (i think that's the one) on the dct itself within a couple seconds you can bring up various menus.

One of those has an ide status, so you can see if the drive is still recognized.

Just checked, drive shows ok, shows space remaining. Under general status - Error: EP00 - found the error on wikipedia -
***
Ep 00 Fan Failed EP00 Will only be shown on D01 of the status page (hold ok while box is off). Box will display 0 on leftmost LCD numeral (.0 ) Replace fan or Box

that seems to go with the overheating issue...

is your box a dvi or hdmi model?

HDMI. I could see fan failure followed by overheating. Odd part was how only the PVR functions were lost originally, everything else was fine. Then the reset - all gone.

Awhile back, I was watching TV and experienced a 5 minute or so power failure. When the power came back my Shaw cable box 6412 did not work properly. I had lost the program guide and PVR functionality. Basically anything accessed through the menu. I could continue to watch TV through the cable box but I was limited to changing channels through entering the channel number or using the channel up and down commands.

I called Shaw and they scheduled a service call and the cable box was replaced.

Same thing happened to me -- came back after a day out of town and discovered my guide had no information. Called them up and they reset the box in that way they do. When I checked on it in the morning, I had guide information, but no PVR menu options -- nor did I have the high-temperature alert. Called back, was told to unplug the box for 1/2 hr and plug it back in -- I could sense this tech had no idea what she was saying, and so gave me a stock response.) It almost seems like it had downloaded the wrong guide software.

Am currently performing a factory reset (which, according to the Wikipedia page, will not erase my recordings). Hopefully this fixes things.

I am glad to hear someone else had the same issue. I have trouble with it just being a box issue after zero guide and a forced reset. I am trying the reset as well, will see what happens.

Factory reset no good, about 20-25 minutes to download, back to the same. No picture/guide/nothing.

Forced download didn't do it for me either. Another phone call, another reset -- and this time it worked. Go figure.

I don't mind Shaw technical support, but I wish they made sure they had one person on staff at all times who knows these units really well -- the level of knowledge is very hit and miss.

Well box replaced, still nothing. Then he changed the amplifier they had installed, all good now. Apparently it was one way not two way - not too sure how this all relates... BUT.... the new box is a 6416, so I am fine in the end going 3 days with no PVR.

They had installed a one-way amp? Very strange. Sounds more like it might have failed, becoming one-way and required replacing.

Sorry to re-hash an old thread, but thisis exactly what is happening to my box right now. After 2 years of no issues.
Am I correct to assume dabell that it wasn't the box but the spliter?
