^ next time, you could consider buying with a credit card that extends the warranty buy up to a year.

I got a PS3 a week ago. Looks great with the LCD HDTV, and I love the games I have.

MotorStorm
Formula One Championship Edition
and Rainbow Six Vegas

I have had the PS3 for a week now and here are my thoughts.

1. It is silent! - I can't hear the fan or the drives spinning at all.
2. Blu-ray looks great! I watched Pirates 1 and the first disc of Planet Earth. I got used to controlling the playback with the PS3 controller quickly and I don't think I will get the remote; however, I would love to hear how others are doing controlling it with a Harmony and the rf remote kit
3. Graphics are amazing
4. I like the free demos, but I wish there were more. I have decided to get Ridge Racer as my racing game and I think I might pick up Virtua Tennis (a game that I normally would have passed by)
5. I like the feel of the controller, but the USB cable is way to short to actually play a game while the controller is charging (on a side note, my harmony 880 remote cable looks exactly the same as the ps3 controller cable, can I use the 880 cable to charge my second controller?)
6. I love the cross media bar, very easy to use
7. The wireless connectivity is great, I was online in minutes
8. Some of the font in the PS Store is too small to read from 12 feet away
9. The sound on these games is great. I love being able to hear cars approaching from behind me, or being able to detect enemies to the right or left.
10. I can't wait for Tiger Woods PGA Tour, NHL 08 and Madden 08!

I am happy with the PS3 and do not regret purchasing it, especially because it plays blu-ray discs. I have not had any crashes or hicups yet and it looks really high-tech next to my original xbox.

Your ps3 is silent? I can definitely hear the fan on mine. Maybe I got a defective unit?

You can't use the Harmony with the PS3 since it's a bluetooth controller

I highly recommend buying Super Stardust HD. This is a blast to play!

Yup, you can use the Harmony cable, or any other USB cable that has the same ends. I have a laptop sitting on my table, and I can charge the PS3 controllers using that.

6. I love the cross media bar, very easy to use

It's easy to use, but once you have it for awhile you'll wish there was a way to reorder the games, especially when you have demos and downloaded games mixed together. At least that's something I found.

10. I can't wait for Tiger Woods PGA Tour, NHL 08 and Madden 08!

I'm interested in NHL 08; I'm staying away from the horribly buggy 2K series!!

Welcome to the club!

Or worse, you have something with a cool background at the top of you list then you download something like Q-bert or Mortal Kombat which has a rather pain background.

I believe he's referring to the Nyko remote and programing a Harmony with it... it's something I plan to try in the near future.

I thought I read that in a post here, but I couldn't find it. Thanks for clarifying PrimeBane. I thought I just made it up.

I love the touch power and eject buttons, but so does my cat. I have my PS3 horizontal now and he will go and play with the eject button and bat the disc when it pops out. I'll have to set it up vertical i guess.

hockeymancw... have you tried any BD movies and outputting and 1080p?

That's when my PS3 starts humming. The fan can be as loud as my 360's and man can I feel the heat coming off it up close.

Unfortunately, I don't have a 1080p compatable display.

Had mine for a couple of weeks now, got it primarily for BluRay.

Some of my impressions.

-Love that it's fairly silent.
-The XMB SUCKS! Man the 360's dash is far superior to this thing
-Online service is crap in terms of user managements, messaging, etc, but I guess it's expected since it's free.
-Only have one game, but it's also nothing great (Resistance). I can see why the PS3 is struggling, there really are no games of interest on this thing.
- I like how the controller is light, but dislike the length of the cord and the lack of rumble (explains why it's light).
- Watched my first BR movie last night, Hellboy, and it looks pretty nice, nothing different than HD-DVD I would say though.
- The system is huge and heavy, 360 I find is much more pleasing in these aspects and in terms of design.

i just unboxed mine today, but will wait for my cables/switchbox from monoprice before i connect anything. first off, i don't like the controller. i already knew i wouldn't like the joystick positions, but now i just found out the triggers aren't great either. my trigger fingers slip off them easily. i hope i get used to it. maybe the rumoured rumble controllers will be slightly modifed.
so while i'll probably start buying more BR discs when it comes to cross-format movies (no combo, hdmi over component), i don't see myself getting PS3 games that are available on the 360.

Forgot about that part riceman, the triggers suck too, especially compared to the Xbox/X360. They really should have redesigned the PS3 controller instead of just rehashing the old PS controllers, I never liked the PS/PS2 controllers, the joysticks are too soft, and in an akward position.

re: the triggers - not only are they "mushy" when you press them (crappy springs i guess), but the act of pressing them not only sllips your fingers off/down, but the the front of the controller correspondingly slips up in your hands. like i said, i hope i find a comfortable grip and get used to it.

the 360 controller just stays in your hands and is quite stable.

The controller is perfect for me. maybe you guys have smaller hands? or bigger? heh.

Yeah I have no complaints about the PS3 controllers. I do with they had a rumble function but the size and shape of them works great for me.

Interesting comment about the controllers. I've never had a Playstation prior to the PS3 and I find the controllers to be quite good. I find the triggers work quite well when playing Motorstorm.

I'm using my PS3 for movies only untill they release a controller with rumble, (hopefully before Christmas).

Eluder, gotta disagree with just about everything you mentioned.

Silent is right, no doubt about it unlike the jet engine 360 taking off.

The XMB is far better then the 360's dash board. I find it much simpler and quicker to navigate.

I don't know what your talking about the online thing? Everything you mentioned I can do just fine and it all works beautifuly. It's xbox users who are getting taken for a ride.

Yeah games are pretty scarce unless your a sports fan which I'am thankfully not. Starting aug though that changes as the big 07 titles for the PS3 start to come out. I think 2007 is going to be Wii and 360 but the way I see it 08 belongs to PS3.

Not sure what controller your using but the SIXAXIS controller is wireless. No rumble is a godsend IMO. I love the triggers far more then the 360's, they feel out of place and awkward but the SIXAXIS ones flow better when moving back and fourth on the shoulder buttons.

If you think about it, rumble is useless outside of simulaters and even then most never use it well. I just hope sony keeps rumble-less controllers for those of us who prefer light controllers. I tend to play for hours on end so thats why I prefer the SIXAXIS over the other guys controllers.

HD movies on blu-ray and HD-DVD probubly aren't that much different but Blu-ray is future proof with it's higher storage capacity. It's just the smarter choice especially for gaming. Does anyone really think standard DVD are enough for the kind of games the PS3 and x360 are capable of? I don't think so. M$ screwed themselves.

PS3 is the better designed sytem to me. looks more refined and simple and practical all in one with no harsh edges like the 360. The heavy weight (it's only 12lbs) is evidence of the technology/capabilities inside and overall the system just has a real "strong" feel too it, like Nintendo well made strong. Sorry thats the best I can explain it heh :P.

With all the features the PS3 has like backwards compatable with 1000's of
ps1/ps2 games which I have a lot of so that's one of the reasons i got it so early myself, upgradable HDD (i'm putting in a SSD once they come down in price a bit), free online gaming that is on par with ANY paid service (I have never had any problems or lag with it or xbox live but the difference is ofcourse I pay for the Live and don't anyone tell me about silver/bronce membership, you can't do squat with that other then update your system) and ofcourse games too be availible it's just the clear winner and well worth the 549$ price tag.

I just skimmed over this thread but to all the naysayer's I truly wonder how many actually bothered to learn what the PS3 is capable of, do you all even have your firmware up to date for that matter? 1.90 is the latest? .

Overall, I give the PS3 a 99%, we just need more games (not more crap sports thanks) and this systems gets a 10 for me. But making games just takes time. 360 has more because devs started work on games for it almost a year ahead of PS3 and wii is 10 year old tech so it's no exactly hard or expensive to develop for either. PS3 will come around, just takes time like everything else.

just a few impressions after playing with the PS3 for the weekend (btw my display is a JVC 56" 1080p LCOS):

interface: i like the XMB. although i'm used to the 360 dashboard, the PS3's interface is much faster to navigate and has much more direct access to files. also, i was afraid the DL times would be slow, but they were actually comparable to XBL. the PS store reminded me of itunes. it was fine, could use some minor tweaking. and hopefully we'll get downloading-during-BR-playback eventually.

BR playback: NICE. watching movies with an HDMI connection was very good (i currently use a non-elite 360 for HDDVDs). movies generally seem to be sharper (though i have no A/B comparison for cross-format movies), i compared the sharpest HDDVDs i have - King Kong, Smokin' Aces, Miami Vice - and compared them to the sharpest BRs - Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven, POTC3. and the BRs were sharper. makes me want to get either an Elite or an HDDVD standalone. anyways the component connection had edges that were slightly smoother; the HDMI connection had sharper/crisper edges. the one caveat is that the HDMI's accuracy meant film grain and video noise was much more pronounced. ignoring BHD where it was intentional, scenes here and there in KoH and many scenes in the remastered Fifth Element had lots of noise. i know it's not the tv as Ice Age 2 was perfect. in comparison, HDDVDs had noise too but it was muted; again probably because it was a component connection. i saw way more noise in Fifth Element than Children of Men.

games: Heavenly Sword demo was pretty good, and i generally don't like hack+slash games. however the video on some of the demos seemed to have less video contrast (lighter black levels) than the perfect BluRay playback. and this only happened on some demos. Resistance FoM actually looked ~blurry~... which i found in a number of demos.... don't know why. it was like i was watching a game video and not actually playing it. overall the graphics on the demos weren't as good as the average 360 game. though maybe it's just me. it's pretty much accepted that cross-platform games are about identical.

controller: still hate it! the analog sticks are way too long for my taste. clicking down sometimes leads to inadvertantly pointing it in another direction, which makes you have to be careful when doing it which shouldn't be needed for reflex-oriented games. and the triggers still suck. i found it weird that in the Resistance demo you actually use the bumper buttons to shoot. :) although the game itself seems quite playable, i found myself wishing i had a 360 controller to play it with.

noise: NONE. while the 360's drive noise isn't too bad when you're playing shooters or drivers, sometimes with quite games like Oblivion or Splinter Cell, a little less noise would be nice. also, even when the main drive ISN'T in use, the fan's in the back are a little loud. it doesn't really bother me when playing HDDVDs, but there IS a difference between a little noise and no noise, especially in quiet scenes.

so all in all the PS3's pretty good. it's nice to be format neutral now, and i FINALLY get to see Black Hawk Down in HD (after the Matrixes, this was my wanted HD viewing). also the upcoming exclusive games look promising, i just wished they had a better controller.
