All the channels are digital in Winnipeg now. Hurray! Now I'm paying for digital cable service and actually getting it - imagine that?

I thought it was only edmonton, calgary and vancouver that are going all digital this month.

you get better picture quality with analogue.

digital, they break down the signal. break into 0101010101

and you loose some of the fine details.

Some channels are over-compressed and there the quality falls off, however, you wouldn't have those channels at all with analogue since there isn't enough bandwidth for 400 analogue channels.

There are roughly 10 digital channels or 2-3 HD channels in the space of each analogue channel (assuming QAM256).

Even it picture was same quality, it would still be nice not to fill the PVR quite as fast.

I am EXPECTING better quality, however. There's definitely the potential for that and I'm hoping Shaw puts it to good use. This can't be a bandwidth saving scheme only.

Its not digital in Winnipeg, so I don't know what mtx is talking about (hmmm mtx is similar to MTS?)

I'm pretty sure it is because in my living room I have digital cable and when my wife turns on regular cable in the kitchen, we can hear that there's a delay in the living room. Maybe they're doing testing in my area?

I agree with Shawguy my 6412 indicates that the service is analog.
d06 service type analog.

Definitely not digital for me either in Winnipeg (Transcona). In fact, I had a tech here today and asked him about all digital. He didn't know when it was happening in Winnipeg. I realize he wouldn't be the first to know, but if it was happening TODAY, he probably would've known about it.

This can't be a bandwidth saving scheme only. It's not. While they are providing both analogue and digital identical channels, this actually takes more bandwidth. The equivalent of about 7 analogue channels - about 42 MHz.

Eventually, as analogue channels get dropped and moved to the digital tier, then there will be bandwidth savings.

That is not an indication of 'digital' service. I have that here as well and always have. Programs through the STB are about 2 or 3 seconds behind the rest of the TV's in my home that are without boxes.

^^ Yes quite right, we use Shaw DCT's here and they are always about 5 seconds behind analog.

The delay sucks! During the NHL playoffs you know a few seconds before someone scores because you can hear the neighbors screaming. haha.

with OTA there's even less of a delay... I'm that neighbour who's screaming first. Go Canucks Go!!!:D

In the past I've seen a delay of about about 2-3 seconds on analog cable compared to OTA.

Its great Shaw is gettiing all digital, but what took them so long?

Rogers has been digital along with alot of Ontario.

Even my 75g service area with may cable co has all digital.

You think it would be EASY with Shaw with there Star Choice, Shaw Broadcast Service.

Guess it was a bandwith issue / not a priority.

I think the only reason for the apparent delay is that PVRs read from the HD after recording to buffer. I find it interesting that the delay is different between my 6416 and my 6208. The FW seems slow at doing these things on the 6416 as well as my previous 6412III.

Although the DVR can cause a (further) delay if you pause live TV - usually 4 seconds or so, there is still a delay if you watch "live" or if you watch a digital channel on a digital STB.

I'm not sure about the Motorola, but the SA are "live" until you press pause and then you can "see" the additional delay associated with the recording.
