: Shaw: analogue SD channels also in digital late November, er December, er 2007?
ta-kid 2006-12-13, 06:38 PM Well they better have me digital in January that works or I may switch to Starchoice which I believe is all digital. My analog channel picture quality sucks on a SXRD 60 inch TV.Switching to Starchoice will hit shaw were it hurts LOL Yes I know!Still Shaw
Wruby 2006-12-13, 08:35 PM I heard there is a bug in the firmware Shaw uses to switch existing boxes to all digital. Apparently, the bug sets 5C=0 for all channels. That could be why they are so reluctant to switch everyone.
Well if that's true then a QAM Capable Tuner should be able to pick up these all digital channels, No?
joesotham 2006-12-13, 08:37 PM no, 5C=0 just disables copy-protection
farfromover 2006-12-13, 08:50 PM What is 5C=0 ???
Yes, what exactly does that mean?
JesseJ 2006-12-13, 08:53 PM 5C=0 is a code so that a program can be copied infinitly (SP?). 5C=1 means it can be copied once only, usually to the PVR's hard drive.

Isn't that like jumping off the aligators plate right into his mouth. Starchoice is owned by Shaw.

PokerChip 2006-12-15, 05:33 PM On a typical analog channel, how much % improvement would you say (0% being no improvement or 100% being twice as good)?
Or perhaps you see a range, depending on the channel....
It depends on the quality of the distribution plant in your area.
marko 2006-12-15, 08:07 PM Ok so I called today to see if I could have any luck getting the digital switchover. I used the same line as brgnewman. Me: "I'd like the all digital fcs code added to my account please. CSR: Can you repeat that. I did. CSR. Oh, ok, sure I can do that for you.
It was that easy. He added the code. I asked if he was doing a reset. He said no. I told him that I heard that sometimes it doesnt work without a reset. So he says no problem I'll do a reset now for you.
Bing bing bing and I'm all digital. Havent checked it out enough yet to see if there is a marked difference. I'm mainly hoping for an improvement on Sportsnet west for the Canucks games.
brgnewman 2006-12-15, 10:55 PM Ya, I had to repeat it to him too; he thought I said "All Cable FCS" the first time but right away I repeated "All Digital FCS" he knew exactly what to do. Once it had added he told me to try flipping channels and they were still analog so they reset it and I had a fully digital signal.
Personally, I love the Digital Signal. All my channels are very clear and Channel 3, 5 and 22 all look amazing now (Had a few issues with them being analog). The one thing I noticed when he switched the box over was that when you exit Shaw On Demand now it goes to the channel you were last on instead of "The Weather Channel" like people are reporting on the DCT2500 (Mine was doing this before).
Also something else to add; Channel 4 (Broadcast News), Channel 9 (Shaw Digital Screening Room) and Channel 10 (ShawTV) are all still Analog for some reason but comeon, who watches those channels? ;)

EDIT: I've been thinking; if you have one of the new "All Digital" Shaw DCTs (DCT700 for example) and the "All Digital FCS" code is on that account, would your other "analog/digital" DCTs (DCT2500 for example) recieve an All Digital signal or a mixed signal?
JohnnyCanuck 2006-12-16, 12:02 AM Are you guys talking to the cable repair support line, the HD support line, or just the add services line?
brgnewman 2006-12-16, 12:13 AM I phoned 716-6000 in Calgary, AB. Chose number 1, then number 4 and then while on hold it randomly said "Transfered to Repair Dept" and that's who helped me.
Blintok 2006-12-16, 02:39 AM I called and chose the add services section.
as for improvements ..just about every former analog improved by atleast 50%
most are equal to the original digital channels, which for me looked to be near
HD in quality.
JohnnyCanuck 2006-12-16, 03:18 AM I called, chose HD support (guide data bug, needed a reset anyway). Tech couldn't do it (said he was instructed not to). He went and asked his supervisor who again told him no. So, he said he couldn't do it for me. Fair enough, if an employee's supervisor says no, it's not up to the tech rep to do different.
Phoned right back to add services ... was done right away. Shaw wierdness for you.
JohnnyCanuck 2006-12-16, 03:17 PM I think I have digital but does someone know why this is happening. I tune to an analog channel and get the Dolby symbol which should mean digital. But when I go to d06, it says analog. Huh?
Sonisame 2006-12-16, 04:45 PM I think I have digital but does someone know why this is happening. I tune to an analog channel and get the Dolby symbol which should mean digital. But when I go to d06, it says analog. Huh?
Mine is other way around, I dont see no Dolby Signal, butd06 says digital..
I am confused, but the picture quality does look slightly better than analog..
thefly 2006-12-16, 06:49 PM Just called shaw again today. Asked for the all digital fcs code to be added to my account. The rep said ok, and then asked how I knew about this. Told him that I heard it was being offered. He added it and then asked how the picture was - told him needed a reset which he then did. Once it reset I had all digital :D
The rep asked how the picture looked as they are reviewing how the PQ compares on channels like sportsnet and city. PQ is quite better - I would say at least 50%.
