No, both digital and analog are present on the cable, so the analog tv will still use the analog signal.

I too called and got the all digital line up.

The CSR put the code in but he did not reset the box. He said it was a real simple reset and I might not notice anything. I tuned to channel 3 and pressed info but there was no dolby digital symbol. I tried to tune in channel 2 and it tuned in. I was told that I had an analog/digital box so I should be able to see channel 2. I told him that I will look at the diagnostics and it said analog. He was finally convinced that he should reset the box. It worked. It does take a bit of patience...

Argh. I finally got a hold of a rep who would do it after they asked around about it.. and then they were told not to by their supervisor.

I wish I was having the same kind of luck you guys were having. I've probably called at least five times.. the supervisor told the rep that it may damage the boxes or some bs like that.

I just got off the phone with a CSR and was given the party line about "it not being the current policy" to switch to all digital for any boxes except for the two new ones. Nothing I said would convince him to even try it (I have a 2500 btw). I asked to speak to a manager and was told that one would call me tomorrow. We will see what the manager says tomorrow. :(

Just out of curiousity which markets are all digital?

I assume that at least these 3 markets are

Vancouver
Calgary
Edmonton

Dam, I tried again to email Shaw again (Because I hate the fact everyone has digital yet whenever I try I can't get it) and nothing works. I just got this email back:
Hello Barret,

Thank you for your email.

Unfortunately we are unable to add this code to your digital unit. The customers whom have this done will be audited and removed. These codes are programmed for our new DCT700's and DCT3080(PVRS). People whom have had their units set to the new code, will be audited in the weeks to come. If you would like to trade in your current digital unit we would be more then happy too. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

- Barret

They can't take it away after they gave it to me. If they do ..... I'll call Novus.

LOL!
Ya, I'll trade my 160GB HD PVR, in exchange for a $98 DCT....or better yet, an SD-PVR.
Another botched roll out on Shaw's part.

Hi there, now that can't be their official stance on this as that is just silly.

Mind you though, with Shaw it could be. How can people who have more expensive units that have more features be told to get a lower feature set unit, to be able to enjoy an all digital lineup.

I really hope that that email was just like getting an ill informed Csr on the phone.

Yes, I would hope that an official e-mail would not be that grammatically incorrect.

If they take away my choice of choosing digital and put me back to OTA leakage then I will have them come to my house once a week every week until they fix my impaired channels. I live high up and the OTA leakage in my area is un-fixable. After getting all digital without ghosting I will never go back to analog with channels that suffer OTA leakage.

That being said most of the non impaired channels look a lot better on analog. I was watching CH-21 ABC Seattle and the jagged edges look awful on digital. CNN CH-33 looks pretty good on analog with minor analog noise – on digital CNN is over all cleaner except it too suffers from digital artefacts (mostly on fades)and jagged edges (mostly on green screen key).

I like having the choice of choosing analog or digital signals, if shaw takes that choice away just because I have DCT 2000HT units instead of the cheaper composite units then I will leave shaw. But I think if they waste a few service calls on me and see for themselves the OTA leakage I think they will let me keep the d-mapping…. I just hope it doesn’t come to that.

this is pretty stupid.. shaw has the ability now to do all digital for everyone with a digital box, why can't they just let those that are requesting for it get it.

and for those that have all digital but have issues and want to go back on analog, then let them. i don't understand why we have to run around in circles to get something they are already "offering"

I understand them not wanting to go system wide with the change. But not giving the service to those that request it just doesn't make sence. We are obviously knowledgable customers if we request it and we're smart enough to decide which we think looks the best on our TV.

I will be upset if the switch me back. since going all digital I have not had a single CIU error. Something thaat happened often before. Also the box is more responcive fastforward is faster skip forward and back are Instantaneous. I think Encoding and then recording analog channels takes more processing powerr than just recording straight from pre encoded digital broadcasts.

Can anyone say "class-action" for product misrepresentation?

I bought a $700 "digital HD-box" yet shaw is knowingly giving me analog channels when they have a digitial feed available that works on my box.

I think it's time to put this digital-only question to Mr Shaw and see what their real justification is.

I'm willing to wait a while, under the assumption that they are in the 'testing phase'...but it would be nice to know either way, and I don't think we should have to jump through hoops to make it happen.

As I said before, I'm pretty happy with the PQ on my analog channels, the only advantage here would be the savings on the PVR space (and maybe sound quality?).

I am Curious if any of these new Digital channels are encrypted (5C).

Has anyone with the new digital box tried to tune these channels straight to an QAM tuner on thier TV or HTPC Tuner Card? If these channels are unencrypted, then you could use some of the newer Digital TV Tuner cards on your PC without a DCT that I have plugged into my Hauppauge 150.

I couldn't agree with you more.

This testing phase thing is always endless with Shaw. They decided to release the new boxes, but ALSO and more importantly their new packages, which clearly outline the option to be "DIGITAL".

I am going to push this a lot on my end and I invite others to do the same.

I could buy the 'testing phase' except that would be ignoring the fact that there are now digital-only terminals for sale from shaw, I even saw the commercial last night. That, to me, says testing is over with.

That being said, I'm really only interested in the space savings on the PVR as well. I haven't tried the CSR-convincing routine yet either.

I heard there is a bug in the firmware Shaw uses to switch existing boxes to all digital. Apparently, the bug sets 5C=0 for all channels. That could be why they are so reluctant to switch everyone.

What is 5C=0 ???
