Daemons 2009-12-10, 05:26 PM Did you happen to notice if Addison still has the GE pre-amp?
If it's the 24db amp you were looking for, I just noticed today that Canadian Tire sells a 24db adjustable GE Amp. It's painted black.
Marc
Daemons,
all you really need is RG-6, but to make sure of a little less loss, you should use RG-6 QUAD shield. I buy it at Access Electronique in DDO (Brunswick & Des Sources). The supplier is PROVO. It seems to be decent enough cable.

Do you recall the price? per foot, metre, or per length?
I'd have to get some quad fittings too. Home Depot Ideal brand seems to be popular in the coax thread. :)
Marc
cant recall the price, you should call first
so far the only place ive found quad fittings that actually go on quad cable properly are the ones at HD, but very expensive if I recall
Daemons 2009-12-11, 01:08 PM I'm going to go investigate the Philips RG6 spool at Addison's. If it's the same as what I found on the Philips website, the cable would be Tri-Shield RG6.
I never bought it because they kept telling me their 95% Braid RG6 was MUCH better.
Btw, I think the 95% Braid cable I got is made by Provo.
I found this: 5916A (http://www.provowire.com/results.asp?basic=&catnum=&rgtype=&shield=&shieldtype=&paircount=&stranding=&conductorcount=&awgsize=&page=63) Scroll down to 5916A and the description matches exactly.
Could be a coincidence but it's a strange one. It's not marked Provo anywhere on the cable though.
Marc
Daemons 2009-12-12, 12:59 AM Ok. I checked the Philips RG6 spool at Addison's (500' for $30) and it is not tri-shield. I would have been (happyly) surprised if it was.
It is 60% braid with foil, copper clad steel centre conductor.
Still, not bad for the price.
The 5916A 95% copper braid RG6 is from PROVO. I saw the boxes it comes in, so the link above is good.
I scored a left over of 50' Commscope 5740 RG6 Quad (http://www.commscope.com/uniprise/eng/support_document/spec_sheets/network_coax/1199752_8617.html) for $8! It's all they had though. They didn't even know there was a difference. Too bad, I would have bought more. :D
Marc
my experience with Addison is they dont generally carry Quad shield, or at least not in good lengths.
the only place I find it regularily is at Access. Its quite pricey though at over $.30/ft, but their Provo cable seems to be of reliable quality (whatever you do dont let the Access kids put on the F-connectors, they dont know what they are doing!)
Typical loss per 100ft, for ANY Quad shield is about 3 db at 200 Mhz, 4 dB at 400, and 6 dB at 700 Mhz. The only way to improve that is to go to RG-11.
Again the differences are in the order of .5 dB - 1db between RG-59, RG-6, RG-11, on less than 100ft
As for tri-shield, theres no point.

Thats not expensive. The Provo 95% Braid at Addison's is $0.35/foot. Only if you buy 100' does it come down to $0.30/foot.
Why do you say theres no point for tri-shield? I haven't checked yet but some HD stock it. It uses the same RG6 connectors as dual-shield and give almost the same benefit as quad (according to the coax thread). If it's cheaper, I was thinking of using it inside, and use the Quad outside.
If I find any I'll post back here.
Marc
i didnt think the tri-shield was that much cheaper, so I figured for a little extra go with the quad as it seems to be the new standard
also I would feel more comfortable NOt mixing coax types if avoidable...just me!
Daemons 2009-12-15, 10:58 PM Balm,
I ended up getting 100' of 95% copper braid at Maddisons for $16. Theirs has a foil along with the copper braid. It's not the best coax, but it'll do for now.
I was surprised by the length I ended up using inside getting it to my living room. I haven't measured it yet but I'd say it's around 75' or so + the 15' or so of down-lead. I didn't need a drop amp before, but I think I need one now.
Either that of moving my antenna has changed (for the worst) my signal reception. I have a 3410 in the mail.
Btw, I used PPC EX6XL connectors. Those are great. They fit my Quadshield nicely. And the XL fit my Philips/Zenith tool just right.
Addison's has PPC EX6XL Connectors at $1/each, or $30/50.
You have to ask for them, otherwise they try to pawn off their other cheaper ones at the same $1/each.
Marc
Daemons,
you are very resourceful, good for you, keep it up!
you have about the length I have - yes the twists and turns add up fast - I realized after, maybe I should have used that "plenum" grade, better for very hot heating on the roof - oh well!
where do you intend on placing that amp exactly...
BTW, ive been dealing a lot with Fastenal (pointe-claire) and no major problems so far, those fittings are always more from here - gotta love this province eh - you know I cant find another place quite like it...i needed a lot of fittings for an extreme gain quad curtain channel cut
Daemons 2009-12-16, 01:05 PM where do you intend on placing that amp exactly...
Right after the UVJS, connected at the antenna. I tried my 3414 at the end of my run (next to the TV) and it behaves the same way as before. It drops my ch22(cbs) from 50% down to 10%. And that's using a UVJS before it. I think it's defective. I really need to find someone with a 3414 to do a swap test to know for sure.
My base signals are worst than before, but I think it's due to the extra cable loss more than the antenna placement.

What's that? Good to hear for the good service. I wish I had gone there instead of the Anjou store.
Daemons, go here for curtain quad:

for the amp/antenna discussion we should continue in mclapps thread...

Yuprules 2010-02-16, 09:55 AM For anyone living in the South Shore (or who don't mind the drive). After everyone screaming that Mont Calm electronique wasn't so great and Raybel was better, I tried to find a dealer for the "better" Antenna's Direct antennas in Montreal and finally found a dealer. They had a sale on a DB2 for $30, so I picked one up for a friend.
Microinformatique (just off the 30)
5455 boul. Cousineau, Longueuil (Saint-Hubert) - 450.462.8416
They do NOT open on the weekends, and short hours during the weekdays:
9:30 am to 6:00 pm Mon - Fri.
List of Antenna's Direct antennas, they also carry the new funky looking
ClearStream4 Antenna (C4)
http://microinformatique.ca/Page/prix2/prixdetail_morefrom_manufacturer_e.asp?VENDOR=Antennas%20Dir ect
Alas, they do not carry any pre-amps.
Carlos J 2010-02-16, 10:50 AM I was at RPS Sat last week and had asked about OTA,Roger(from RPS Sat) was very helpful ,but there are way to many to choose from,i was a bit overwhelmed but as soon as i can convince the wife (and the snow melts) i will most probably get into the OTA for some local HD channels,Roger had recommended a couple of them ,but now i have to decide on a couple of things(tower ,roof mount...),RPS Sat is located in Montreal just west of the island in Vaudreuil-Dorion,i have picked up a few things from them for my home theater room, most of the items were not even on their web site ,but they have come through every time so far.If you are looking for some OTA gear i would give them a call.
Kraven 2010-03-01, 12:22 PM I going to invest in an preamp; any ideas where do get it from the South Shore
Kraven 2010-03-01, 12:22 PM The SBGH w/ narods is built. I just chucked it outside onto a snow bank without aiming it and scanned. Picked up everything 70-98%, including CBS at 92%); Dint get WVNY (0%) though; what I dont understand is if I type 22.1, Im getting CBS whereas my in laws get ABC on 22.1.
