: CBC HD Hockey - Split from Official CBC Thread
bb147 2008-04-14, 02:09 AM yea, i thought it was just me.. i noticed tonight's game.. flames vs sharks (game 3) looked a little worst than normal.
was it an upconvert? if it was an upconvert it was a nice upconvert.
but if it was really HD, then its pretty bad HD.. ;)
Doug30 2008-04-14, 09:53 AM There's no way that Cgy/SJ game was hd.
This was due to equipment failure at a distributor's site. It has been corrected.
This only applies to subscribers of this service. It was not a production fault.
poncho@home 2008-04-14, 11:51 AM Last nights game on CBC Montreal was not in HD, but instead was in ED 16:9.
Does anyone know why? A buddy with Videotron confirmed that RDS was in full HD, so why wasn't CBC?
I think I will fire off an email this afternoon to them.
Random Dude 2008-04-14, 11:56 AM Maybe because the habs were playing?
Just kidding...:)
poncho@home 2008-04-14, 12:54 PM This bites. I went OTA a couple of months ago, and this is the only complain I have so far. All playoff games should be HD!
Yuprules 2008-04-14, 01:03 PM poncho@home, be sure to also mention/bug CBC to hurry up and move their darn HDTV broadcast tower to Mount Royal ;)
haystack 2008-04-14, 01:04 PM I wonder how the CBC will get their HD truck to China for the Olympics :(

The Host Broadcaster is responsible for providing the HD feeds. I'm assuming they'll also make available HD production facilities for broadcasters that require/desire them.
So as not to veer this discussion totally off the hockey rails, I'm somewhat dismayed the Olympic promos the CBC has been running during the hockey games aren't produced in HD. Doesn't seem to bode well for a full-on HD commitment for the Games themselves.
Thanks Marc, for the clarification on the sound issue this past weekend. Seems my ire should have been directed at BEV.

Let's be a bit realistic. HD is a new and expensive technology that still is in just a very small % of Canadian households. Most viewers still see the games in SD. From the CBC's standpoint and other broadcasters as well it will take time for every show to be HD. It all has to do with the services priorities and budget.
I still haven't had my question from late last night answered. Marc from CBC if you're there, was last night's game in Calgary in HD or WS SD? It was very ambiguous almost as if some cameras were one way and some the other.

I am glad I wasn't the only one to notice. The "Behind the Mask" segments were definitely HD, but the game itself was blurry and not what I would consider HD. It still looked better than SD, which is something I suppose.
I wonder why?
magnet 2008-04-14, 04:55 PM The HD truck (Premiere) is in San Jose, the digital widescreen SD truck (Chinook) is in Calgary.

Yet the closeups looked so good espcially the national anthems. Was CBC getting these shots from the US broadcaster (in HD)? Only the main camera long shots seemed to be WS SD.
The question that still bothers me is why is the CBC's west HD truck sent to San Jose and not Calgary? Shouldn't the games in our own country come first? (Not to mention the cost of sending the truck to California).
nanook1496 2008-04-14, 05:15 PM Being relatively new to HD, I'm actually relieved to hear that the games weren't in HD. I've seen a few in what must have actually been HD and was wowed, but the last few playoff games had me wondering if something was wrong with my TV!
Both games last night were widescreen SD.

Because by doing the games in San Jose in HD, they're guaranteed that the number of HD games will be greater than or equal to the number of SD games.
magnet 2008-04-14, 06:34 PM The truck was previously in Vancouver for the last regular season game of the year. 1600 km to San Jose or 1000 km to Calgary. The other consideration could have been having to have the truck go though Rogers Pass this time of year. Avalanche control/ road closure is always an issue.
Also this gets the truck in California if the Ducks advance to Round 2.

Closeups will always look better than long distance shots. The broadcast had good color, but the picture itself was still fuzzy. If the HD truck was not in Calgary then there is no way that they would have been able to transmit an HD signal.
Surprise surprise..... somehow CBC is managing to do the Colorado-Minnesota game in HD.
And just when I was getting ready to watch it on RDS with the Versus HD feed.
Also, there's been a Harry Neale sighting.

The game is in Denver so it is probably the same HD truck that was used in the San Jose games. The next game in San Jose is on Thursday so the truck should be back there in time.
