Because the words coming from Mark Lee would not match the picture on the screen.

Bottom Line... CBC has only 2 HD trucks (one for each coast) and last year they didn't rent HD trucks for other occasions.

They can not use feeds from other networks, because the story lines for matchups are not consistant.

Versus would be (for example) zeroing in on the San Jose Heros (Thorton, etc.) where the CBC would be isolating Keenan, Phaneuf and Iginla.

CBC adds more games from the 1st round:
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/story/2008/04/08/hnic-playoff-sched.html

Game 3 (Monday, 10 p.m. ET) and, if necessary, Game 6 (April 19, time to be announced) of the Minnesota Wild-Colorado Avalanche series have been added, with both games at the Pepsi Center in Colorado.

The Nashville Predators' first-round matchup against the Detroit Red Wings is one of two series added to the HNIC broadcast schedule. Starting April 16, Games 4 through 7 of the Detroit Red Wings-Nashville Predators first-round matchup have also been added to the HNIC schedule.

Is there a reason they can't get the HD camera feed from Versus for the games in San Jose?
I believe it's all about control. They don't want to not have control on the video feed.

Does CBC not put out an HDTV schedule anymore? Their normal link is dead:

Which is all very well and good in a perfect world where CBC had unlimited HD equipment but maybe given the circumstances they might be willing to bend a little to give us more games in HD?

About half a year ago they stopped publishing the special HD/WS schedule. Marc from the CBC explained it all in an earlier post. I too miss it.

Thanks. I did look back but man this thread has grown!

> I expect SJ-Cal, Pit-Ott in HD, Mtl-Bos in upconverted SD.

Would it not be possible/reasonable that the Eastern HD truck shuttles between Ottawa & Montreal games? They are playing on different nights and it's only a two hour drive.

Based on a story in our local newspaper here in PEI the games in San Jose, Ottawa and Montreal will be in HD on CBC. Looks like Calgary is the loser. How does CBC explain that?

Which paper is that in??? Makes sense though, Show the games that everyone will see, and the one that just was in the final, and one with a following like Montreal. If this is true, I see it as a very wise move by them.

You can find it at the Guardian's website (Charlottetown) however it is actually a Canadian Press story so it probably is also published elsewhere.

"For the first round, the CBC will show games at Ottawa, Montreal and San Jose in high definition. All games on TSN will be in high definition."

Key word being "at", interesting that its AT San Jose

You caught the same thing I did. Interesting that they are willing to get a truck (probably rented) in San Jose but can't or won't do the same thing in their own country (Calgary).

Seems familiar to the story back when CBC had a single HD truck. Oilers had to get to the Stanley Cup Final before a home game was televised in HD. Western final vs. the Ducks had some HD from Anaheim, but not Edmonton. CBC has obviously made big steps forward in the meantime (two trucks vs. one), but it's ironic to me how similar this sounds.

Maybe they're doing it this way because 3 of the first 5 in that series are in San Jose. Just a guess though.

Anyway, unless the Calgary games are HD as well, I'd presume CBC's "Western" truck is actually in San Jose (it was in Vancouver last Saturday, and could easily make the trip to SJ by Wednesday).

I saw the HD truck parked in front of CBC calgary this morning on my drive to work.
I suspect CBC will do the SD Widescreen thing for US home games involving Canadian teams.
This complicates things....

It looks like that is exactly what they are doing. Encore (http://www.cbc.radio-canada.ca/mobile/images/pdf/Encore_Specs_Ang.pdf) will likely drive between Ottawa and Montreal and Premiere (http://www.cbc.radio-canada.ca/mobile/images/pdf/Premiere_Specs_Ang.pdf) will likely stay in Calgary (if the NHL is correct) or San Jose (if the Guardian is correct). Likely they will have Laurentien (http://www.cbc.radio-canada.ca/mobile/images/pdf/D80montreal.pdf) (formerly known as D80) drive back and forth between Pittsburgh and Boston and Chinook (http://www.cbc.radio-canada.ca/mobile/images/pdf/Chinook_Specs_Ang.pdf) (formerly known as D86) stay in San Jose (or Calgary). They will probably have to get another truck involved if both Ottawa and Montreal end up playing on the 19th though as both games would be played in the US and they will need Encore in Ottawa the next day.

crossin me fingers for us!

Cheers.
I think you may have been fooled by the way CBC shows their schedule. For all games it shows CBC, CBC HD. Based on the way this worked out over the winter it meant that the game is on regular CBC stations, and on CBC HD stations. What it doesn't tell you is whether the game is in HD or Widescreen SD on CBC HD. A bit misleading and not very informative in my opinion.

The NHL schedule seems to summarize it well:

http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app?page=Schedule&service=page&gameType=3

The CBC and CBC(HD) games are clearly indicated.

FYI The Montreal/Boston series will be available with Mandarin commentary (SD video). It's available on CBC.CA. ExpressVu, Rogers and Shaw/Starchoice are picking up the feed for insertion on special channels.
